the chances for rain. i'll let you know when you need the umbrella in the daupd forecast. good morning, everyone. welcome to news 4 midday. we begin with that deadly apartment fire in fairfax county. officials say one person was killed and more than two dozen people are displaced. you can see here chopper 4 was over the scene showing the extensive damage left behind. but what the eye doesn't see is the impact this is having on dozens of lives the day after easter sunday. cory smi has been at the scene for hours this morning talkeng with resid. cory, good morning. >> good morning. 30 people will have to find somewhere else to sleep tonight after this fire absolutely devastated this apartment here at the bent tree apartments. things are quiet now. there's been a flurry of activity all day. fire investigators.

insurance adjusters. neighbors coming to see how much damage was done. so many materials lost. sadly a person's life was also lost. after speaking to residents the fact that this human toll of this fire is not higher is due to their actions. >> reporter: the early morning dynshine confirmed what many residents had alr feared. their homes were gone. reduced to piles of smoldering timber. the catrred afterm of the fire that ripped through part of the complex early this morning. as firefighters worked to put it out,en resid could only watch as they belongings went up in flames. >> it's so scary. when you'reslust eep, you're waking up and smellin this >> reporter: diane was still foggy from a deep sleep when she was awakened by a commotion. ce went to the 4th floor window ande face to face with the raging inferno next door. >> it started coming to our window. and i just- i'm like there is a fire. we need to run.

>> wre i'm at -- >> reporter: her neighbor heard the same commotion and ran outside just o time to capture the side of the building engulfed in flames. >> the entire side of the building was ora that's when i called 9-1-1. they said somebody called already. i was like probably going to need to send more than one engine. >> reporter: a second alarm was ounded bringing some 60 firefighters to the scene. crews attacked hot spots for much of the morning. the damage was. do one person was dead and 13 apartmen destroyed. neighbors huddled together to ponder what's next. they had themselves to thank for keeping the human ct of this tragedy from growing. >> the neighbors started running like there is a fire, fire. that's why -- the neighbors just sad our life. >> reporter: again, 30 people have been displaced by this fire. right now the dage estimate stands at about $615,000, but it could climb even higher.

boys out of the car. the other guys was helping us out. about eight of us pushed the car over. >> the intersection has been a problem for a long time, and they san they w to see changes right away. the search continues for a man accused of raping a woman after she got off of a bus in montgomery county. this happened saturday night o watkins mill road nea montgomery village middle school. the victim say she got off the with us and noticed a man following her. she ran but the man caught up to her. she says the suspect knocked her down, dragged her in a grassy area near the woods and raped her. >> it was less than two years ago in october of 2017 when a n raped a woman in the same area. he ad her as she waited on a bus. this is a composite sketchf the man wanted in that attack. no one was arrested. police have not said whether saturday night's case aca this are connected. d.c. police hope images will

lifestyle change. plan.o most of us had a beautiful weekend of weather. some people are still stuck cleaning up from friday'sn tornado i fairfax county. it moved through ae four mil stretch wednesday night. winds up to 70 miles per hour took down trees and power lines. people had to act quickly. >> we discussed it before. we have two boys. we have our fire evacuation plan. i grew up knowing to get to the lowest spot in the house. get inht a bat if you have to. >> all the power should be back on by this point. toeado warnings wer also issued in parts of montgomery county friday night. a lot to clean up this morning still. >> yeah.d an was here friday night tracking that tornado on air. ard when you have a tornado warning in our , a lot of times it's radar indicated. that means the radar is saying there's potentially a tornado. weno don't kw if it's on the

round, but it's picking up rotation. this was a radar indicated tornado warning. the closer you get to the satellite, the better chances the rad says there's a chance of a tornado, the better likelihood there is a tornado. when i was covering this system right around 9:00 p.m., we were saying pretty high confidence first of all we could see the hook on theradar. d second of all, it was pretty much right by the radar site. that did indeed turn out to be an ef-0 tornado. that's the lowest rating on the scale. and it lasted about four miles in length. currently our temperatures are in the 60s. lo to mid0s right now. 65 in washington. 61 in franerick. 65 in culpeper. if you're headed out for a capto watch party ght, the weather is cooperating. really nice. or if you're going for maybe a run and going to catch the game here and there, the weather is awesome. 72 at 6:00 p.m. 7:00, it's comfortable with the
