the attack and is still waiting to hear who else's life was lost. back at sidwell friends, students are also mourning loss. the school says they'll have grief counselors for the students tomorrow. anhe principal here at sidwell friends said they also plan to meet with theer fifth grad tomorrow to talk about this tragedy. >> such a sad time for those kids and teachers as well. e now to th latest, they had today. blast it's still the middle of the night there where curfew has been imposed. members of the fbi and interpol e trenelp wh t investigation. the officials received attacks on possible churches nearly two weeks ago. officials in that country say they never expected anything of that magnitude. they're blaming a small islamic group. given the coordination of these attacks authorities believe they had help a from outside terror network. keep is here for all the latest as this story develops.

an update on breaking news that we brought you at 4:00. thecleanup now complete on the outer loop where that dump truck had goverturned spill its load of dirt on two lanes between allentown road and route 4. the truck hasow been righted. crews have managed to move most of the dirt off the road. 30 residents of an apartment complex in centerville looking for a new place to stay. they are also mourning the death of a neighbor. that man died when this fire erupted at the building on beet circle. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey joins us live some are crediting their neighbors for saving their live, jules. that was quite an inferno. >> that's right. look what happened right now. work crews just left after spending the last few hours putting this fence up around the burned up building. firers investigatotill don't know what caused the flames to start a little bit before 1:00

this morning. the man who died lived in that second floor unit and the neighbors say if it hadn't been for others here shouting and knocking on doors, things could have been far worse. he is what he saw when rushed home from work after a frightening call from his brother. >> he gave me a call to tell me our home is on fire. >> reporter: his sister got the call too. >> my mom called everything is gone. there is fire in the apartment. i just started leaving and crying and rushed to her. >> reporter: this is what the apartment looks like today. blackened. everything destroyed buthe mother and son inside made it out alive thanks to a k neighbor whocked on the door. this brother opened up. >> hened and he saw the flames coming from the window. >> reporter: he dragged his mofeer to sa, then helped dscue aabled child across the hallway. the family heartbroken to see the destruction and to learn the

neighbor who lived upstairs didn't survive. >> everythings gone. >> reporter: but she's here and she's fine. >> our family is safe. we thank god. >> these things can be made again, but not a life. >> reporter: just look at the vio that was captured after he, too, got a knock on his door and fled from an adjoining apartment. >> i came downstairs and the entire side of the billing was bright. that's when i called 911. >> reporter: residentsn the unit that didn't catch fire but are covered with soot trying to salvage belongings before they, toor too, are forced out. we got a look inside. in all 13 apartments now offse limits becauf fire or smoke damage. now i just got an update from apartment management and they tell m everyoneho was displaced by this fire is going to be relocated either in this apartment complex or another one that they control nearby. and red cross, they were also on

hand here in the middle of the nightit helping out w vouchers so folks could get clothes and other things they need in the wake of this emergency situation. jim, back to you in the studio. >> a lot of people stepping up to tlp. now a story you'll only see here on news 4. tonight a major redi is planned for part of downtown d.c. that will impact how you get around and where you can park. the area being impacted i a section of "k" street between 12th and 21st streets. news 4 mark segraves broke thiss story onial media this afternoon. he joins us now live on "k" street with more on the mayor's big plans here. ark. >> reporter: gooevening, jim. gone will be the service lanes on both sides of "k" street. to make room for dedicated bus lanes. it's a very busy stretch of road. the 11 blocks of "k" street northwest. from 12th street to 21st street. 28,000hi vehicles use t part of "k" street every day.

an additional 4000 bus passengers also share this road. d.c. mayor muriel bowser is proposing a complete redesign. this is how the new "k" street will look. >> the concept we're looking at now will include bikess acility and also safer pedestrian intersections along the entire corridor from 12th to 20th. >> reporte the plan iso eliminate the service roads on both sides of the "k" street as well as much if want all of the metered street parking. >> that's kind ofti frustra to hear because it's already hard enough to get parking in this area. sometimes i rely on the little side road todet a goo space. that will be difficult, but the city has trouble with parking as is alread not too surprised. >> reporter: instead of the service road and street parking, there will be drop-off andup pick zones for ride sharing and taxis as well as deliveries like this stretch of main avenue near the new ward.ic there's no ency there, so the parking makes it very confusing for drivers. the turn lane having the service

statements to her. that was in january. police immediately began an investigation. >> specifically several months ago and that information cam to light and then the sheriff's office went through the due diligence. >> reporter: a school spokesperson says as soon as thi allegas were made, williams was removed from the school. he was put in an administrative post where he would have no contt with young people. he didn't stay there long. within two weeks he quit his job as an instructional assistant. by then another female student has come forward with allegations of having inappropriate contact with williams. sto dschool officials stresse he was not a teacher. he was responsible for monitoring students who were part of in-school detention. >> we were not aware of any of the allegations taking place inside of the schools or on s l school property. these contacts were made on school property. >> reporter: williams' identity and the charges werein made pubc

letter from the principal to parents. a spokespson tells us background investigations are done on any potential school employee before he or she is hired and that he passed all of those checks. derrick ward, news 4. >> parent are asked to contact theif shers office if they or their children know of any misconduct by school employees. a tragic easter morning crash leaves a little girl dead and two other children hurt. the c ver county sheriff's office tells us children were in a go-cart that tipped over on golf club drive around yesterday morning in dunkirk. investigators talked to witnesses at this scene, but they want people to call if they saw a go cart in the area. >>ev you n know when someone else was driving by and may have seen something. were they on the road rlier, anything like that? >> the 11-year-old girl driving the go cart died at the hospital. police say she was from dunkirk.

a 7-year-old boy was injured. so was a 12-year-old girl from frederick. wendy. firefighters in three states are honoring a marine who was killed by a roaide bomb in afghanistan. christopher slutman volunteered as a firefighter in prince george's county. also worked as a full-time firefighter in new yorky. cit news 4 drew wilder is in the bronx where mourners pay tribute to a man who gave his life for his country. >> reporter: staff sergeant christopher slutman's casket is here inside the funeral home, but it has a been incredibly moving day as the former u.s. marine, new york cityr firefighte and prince george's county volunteer firefighter were brought across three states back here to the bronx. an american hero came home today from dover air force base up the new jersey turn bike. first responders saluting along the way. >> bring an honor to one of our fallen brothers. personally it's causing me to
