according to a recent study, this happens to four in ten americans. stephanie gosk is here to show usow it canhappen, how to if you find yourself in this situation. >> here's the scary thin it c happen to you even if you plan for it and ask all the right questions. but you open your maithox and e it is. a big medical bill you weren't expecting. we sat down with two women who had identical stories. worked at the same mpany, had the same insurance, and gave birth within weeks of each other ate hospital. but one got a surpriseill in the mail. how did it happen? take a look. >> it was a first pregnancy for both of us. it was fun to have someone to go through that with. >> reporter: they worked at same policy company. you arg of h aealth insura. >> something of it but there are many nuances to health insurance. >> r while pregnant, they shopped around together for the right doctorhosp >> the main concern was finding the hospital tt was in our otsurance network.
8:43 am
because we had the same insurance through our company. >> reporter: they both settled on the same hospital. and waited for their delivery dates. laila went into labor first. >> when the pain started to get pretty unbearable, they asked me if i wanted an epidural and i said yes. so the anesthesiologist came, gave me an epidural. few hours later my son arrived. >> rep erin. midnight.t the epidural in then around the next morning, had a really l. >> reporter: was it your feeling your insurance compa was going to be paying for the vast majority of is? >> yes. that was mynd understaing. >> reporter: but a few weeks later, laila r from the anesthesiologist for $1600. >> i remember telling my husband, this seems really strange. why would i get this big bill? t i didn't want to get reminders and go to collection ifs i tried to figure out what was going on and paid it and
8:44 am
out ht i'll figure this later. >> reporter: did you tell erin you got this whopping bill in the mail? >> i said to watch out for a $1600 bill. she was pretty surprised. >> reporter: why were you surprised? >> both of us actually had the epidural put in in this middle of the night. who's going to stop and think to sk the particr or anesthesiologi who came in the room, excuse me, are you on my nsurance before you do this to me because i dg bill in theil ma >> reporter: erin never got that bill even though she went to the same hospital, had the same insurance. her asthesiologist was covered. f meanwhile, herriend was stuck having to call the insurance company. >> and they kind of did a little digging and then said, oh, it's because you chose an out of network provider when you were in the hospital.d i explained, e anything. i was i labor and this is for getting the epidural. and the woman on the phone, she kind of just kept repeating, you chose an out of network provider. >> reporter: did it sound like
8:45 am
to you in that cversation that she was using the language she's told to use when someone calls in with a crazy bill? >> yes, exactly. >> reporter: you w getting a formulated response? >> yes. >> reporter: it took several calls and plenty of frustration. but laila eventually got her money back. something that doesn'ts alway happen. >> i had no idea that out of network providers could be in an in-network hospital. itthought if you chose an in-network hospal, everyone in the hospital isn network. >> when people do their due diligence k some of these crazy bills, ithat's a failure the system to protect consumers and help them understand what they're facing. >> i thought this was so eye opening. and here is couple of young women who really tried to look into it and do the right thing. what do you do if you're facing a situation you know you've got the hospital stay or whatever, how do you prevent it from happening? >> there are a couple of thingss first i though it's important to talk to the hospital, really
8:46 am
reach out to your insurance company. and make sure that they help yoe find t hospital. and then when you talk to the hospital directly, you should ask them, do you contract other. in this case, an anesthesiologi who could potentially be out o network. that means tough go back to your insurance company. the message here is unfortune way our health insurance system is set up, the bulk of this responsibility falls on the shoulders of patients. >> of course. >> you can't even call to talk to a real life hard. >> especially if emergency and you're not able to ask those questions. >> there's a slight difference in that situation. especially if you're -- let's n say you're i a car accident or something and you're unconscious, you're taken to the nearest hospital to simply save your life. even in that situation, you could end up with one of these bills. so the first thing you do is you get on your phone with the insurance compy with the hospital. you make sure they declare it an

emergency and take care of it. if they don't, continue to negotiate. if is really the case even it's not an emergency. in the case witme these wo the woman who got the bill went back to her insurance company. there is always wiggle room. i think we get these bills and think we're done, we have to pae it ore it's going to collections. thap is not necessarily the case. >> be persistent. >> and the otherhe thing is t are states that have protections for people. so check and see if you live in issue is until this gets fixed, you do have to take control of it. but there is federal legislation that is aware of this problem that hopefully can fixit. >> what a mess. >> thank you. >> thank you, stephanie. good information. go over to je. >> up next, look who we are here. jill martin. personalized jewelry perform for mother's day. but first this is "today"
