this morning as we approach 5:00 a.m. let's get right to a check on the forecast and the commute. melissa mollet is tandsing by. we'll begin with storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell and what we need to know this morning. dy you should be rea for rumbles of thunder early this morning and a chance for some strong to severe storms coming up during the early and middle today.of the afternoon it is a storm team 4 weather alert day. most likely time window for severe weather willtart around noon to 1:00 and could linger up to 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 this evening. he rain at times underneath the stronger storms. small hail, and wind gusts will be one of the main concerns. gusts over 60 miles per hour will be possible. here's the outlook, marginal chance for severe weather at the valley but more into the d.cme o area. what does a slight risk mean? marginal is step one. slight risk for severe wp ther is steo. that means scattered strong to

severe storms. there's still three more steps above that for increasin chances for severe weather. the light risk for today means we need to keep a weather eye to the sky. already thunderstorms, northern fauquier county, headed up not too far to the south of leesburg at this point in time. i'll put the tracker on it. should be arriving in leesburg ten minutes from now. germantown, holding together by 5:30, damascus at 5:45 this morning. this is not severe, but it will be an early morning wake-up call for some. upper 50s across the area. high today, mild, 73 degrees. again, we'll be with you all toonchpdates the severe weather chances. now to elll melissa. the inner loop, two lanes getting by. trying o get more information on this including on how quickly they think that might clear out of the way. as you look at the map, you're yet.eeing any delay quite this just happened, and of course it is only 5:00 a.m. no impact yet if it sticks around, going to be a different

story. rest of the beltway looks good, inner loop and outer loop. 66 and 95, no problems. a reminder on 66, if you're headed out soon tshs still raining through the area as year being into or out of manassas. 270 southbound from 70 to the sp ur, 67 miles per hour. you get there in 27 minutes. >> thank you. we are follong breaking ws this hour out of northeast washington. there has been another attempted atm robbery. this time on south dakota avenue. news4's mental health just arrived on the scene and joins us live with the latest.t' megan, w going on? >> reporter: yeah, it's happenea again a september 11th here in northeast. i'm going to step out of the way so you can take a live look. you see the vehicle involved in this attempted atmbe rob her. they broke in through the front window of this 7-eleven. it appears that the truck got stuck. in fact, that's the tow truck operator that you're seeing

there. he's been kinds of spinning wheels trying to pull the drug out of the store. now the robber or robbers, they were not able to actually get away with the atm. su can see they were successful inshing that truck into the 7-eleven. a failed attempt at this point. this has been going on now for well over a month, almost two months here. this is t fifth attempted or successful atm robbery since mid-march, the ninth since the beginning of of the year. a rash of crimes. in some cases, the robbers have been able to make away wit a th atmsnd cash. in other cases they have not. in this case they were not successful. still under investigation. you see police on the scene. the big question is are all of these connected. many happen on wednesdays. they've been occurring in prince george's county as well as d.c.

on latest happening here south dakota avenue in northeast. back to you. >> megan mcgrath, thank >you. >> 5:04. this morning we're working to learn more about a local teen who was shot and rushed to the l hospit >> the 17-year-old was shot before 6:00 p.m. in bright leaf court in dale city. chopper 4 was there as the teen was loaded into a medevac helicopter. we are still waiting on word of his condition. this appears to have happened in the parking lot outside of town comes. prince george's ty police spent the evening collecting evidence and looking for witnesses. so far, no word on as. arrest police have arrested the s n violently attacked a 94 -year-old woman in d.c. last week. 53-year-old jonathan little isf accused attacking the woman while she h walked toer car. this happen at 11:00 p.m. little snatcheer purse and stabbed her. the woman survived and sayra sh is gteful a suspect has been

arrested. s very rewarding to hear that they were socessful so quickly. i'm eupset at th whole thing. part of it isetting my identity and property ck. >> d.c. police say little recently robbed two other women in the district. they tracked him down by monitoring purchases on the credit cards he allegedly stole. a local coast guard officer accused of planning a terror attack could be released from jail. >> lieutenant christopher hasan prepared the attack and made home made gun silencers. they had a hit list of presidential candidates and supreme court stices. the court said hasan has not iten charged wh terrorism but will only be released under conditions accept to believe that the court. today t woman who admitted to being a secret agent for russia is expected to learn how prison.e'll number maria butina was an american university graduate student and gay ghts activist. prosecutors say she used her contacts with the national rifle

association to gather information from moscow. butina pleaded guilty to thconspiracy. e feds want an 18-month prison. sentence her lawyers are asking for time served. president trump and vice president mike pence will spehe part of t day at the national rifle association's annual meeting in this is video of the nra convention in dallas. the president is scheduled to depart joint base andrews at 110 this morning. indianapolis police say they've planned for protesters and will have a visible police presence downtown. we're just learning north korea presentedhe u.s. with a $2 billion hospital bill for the care oftto warmbier. this according to the "washington post." warmbier, a university s dent, returned to the u.s. in a coma in 2017 and passed away soon after.os the reports that north korea refused to even allow a medical evacuation unt the bill was paid. hover, it is not clear whether

a wild scene played out in denver. a semi-truck crashed into traffic in front of it causing a big pileup. 12 cars, three semis involved. debris scattered all over the road. you can see the fire that started. the fmes spread to the other dars and wound up being fueled by a of wood that one of the semis was hauling. the interstate was shut down for

matter. severe storms are heading our way, expected to come from both of your friday commutes. uh-oh. >> this is the system that's left this destruction behind. rnadoes and flash floods are being blamed for the death of at least five people at this point. good morning, everyone, i'm aaron gilchrest. >> i'm eun yang. the local weather isn't expected to be that strong. we stillav he some warnings we want to get to y t rights morning. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is here with the forecast. and then melissa mollet will have a check ons. the road chuck, tell us about the rain we're getting today. >> it will come down fast and furious at times. it's not going to be a day-long rain event. when i does rain, it really could come down very fast and furious. it is a storm team 4 ambert elert day. the most lik timing for severe storms will be from noon to 6:00. the main threats -- heavy rain, blinding rain. if it comes during the evening commute, you really could bey affected bower travel. not looking for a risk of large hail, but small hail a

possibility. some of the stronger storms could produce a wind gust in excess of 60 miles per hour. officially, it's a marginal risk for storms in the shenandoah valley and virginia. the shore, southern ryland, der the slight risk for severe weather. where doesa that fall on the scale? number two. think of it as a step two out of five. scattered, strong to severe storms as opposed to numerous which would be the next step up. gusty winds are likely with some of the stronger storms later in the day. this storm here, northern montgomery county, frederick county, not severe, but it's been producing rumbles of thunders and is moving quickly to the northeast. eldersburg, before 6:00 in the morning, reisterstown just after 6:00 in the morning. there are more thundershowers across southwestn virginia, as well. our chance chance stands at -- ou rain chance standst 100%. temperatures in the uer 50s. we'll have a high of 73 today. a closer look at the weekend and

the return to sunshine coming up. melissa? >> thank you. taking a look outside right nowre we're seeing some of the rainfall, 270 here at middlebrook road. you see 270 is pretty wet through that section here at this point this moeing. if you'r headed out soon, coming southbound or head northbound up 270 you'll see a lot of the rain. the beltway for the most part is dry right now. inner loop and outer loop. as we zoom in just a little bit, arlington, northbound gw parkway near the key bridge, left lane blocked by an accident. that one actually justd poppe up. manassas, sudley manor drive at the parkway had a crash reported.oo 66 lng dry overall. it was a little wet a short time ago. northbound on 95, gets a little slow toward woodbridge. but very expected here at 5:30 in the morning. aaron? >> all right. thank you. it is 5:32. back to our breaking news in northeast d.c. >> police are on thef scene yet another attempted tafm robbery at a 7-eleven -- atm

robbery at a 7-eleven. megan mcgrath with more. good morning.te >> repor well, good morning. yeah, we have seen a lot of this lately. a truck used to smash through the front, the glass front of a convenience store, in the attempt of taking an atm machine. this is the latest incident that syou can behind me here. you can see that the truck here still inside or at least partially inside that -- the 7-eleven. it appears to be stuck. in this instance, the robbers did not gethe away with machine. they actually fled the scene and left the truck right there where you see it here. in fact, the tow truck driver has been spinning wheels trying to get it out. it seems to be wedged on something. but this has beeni happeng a lot lately. in fact, this is the fifth such atm robbery orttempted robbery since mid-marc many of the incidents happening in prince george's county on ednesdays. thave been others, as well. in fact, nine atm either robberies or attempted robberies sie the 1st of the year.

there has been a rash of these. and of course it begs the question as to whether or not these are in any way connected. certainly something police are looking into. in this particular case, they did not get away with the machine or the cash. but in otherhecases, have been successful. they have been able to get those machin in the back of the truck and just go away to another location where they break into them and get the cash. so an ongoing investigation here. a lot of people coming in trying to get their coffee. trying to get some gas this morning here. rather busy september 11th. right on south dakota avenueig near r road. right now they're not letting anybody into the store. keep that in nd. right now this is still a crime scene behind me. ba to you. >> megan mcgrath live for us in northeast. thank you. we are working to learn more about a serious pedestrn crash on little river turnpike in annandale. chopper 4 over the scene last night. the pedestrian was taken to the hospital with life-threatening

injuries. the driver did stay on the scene. this happened on the westbound side between ever its green lane icd john mar drive. fairfax county pe had the area shut down for several hours overnight while they investigated. and we have an sdwreet tell you about in a local intersection. 16th and v streets in southeast washington has gon from two-way stop intersection to a four-way stop in less than 24 hours. >> it also has fourew high-visibility crosswalks. those changes could have helped in the case of 3 -year-old abdul sekh. was hit and killed by a driver who ran a stop sign the intersection on sunday. the chain-reaction crash was caught by nearby security cameras. people living nearby tell news4 they have frequently complained about speeding at multiple intersections. it is 5:35. here's a look at other top stories -- we're n learning details about a crash that killed five children in bowie several months ago. police say the driver of the car, dominiq taylor, was drunk and possibly high.

in court prosecutors revealed taylor had traces of marijuana in her system, and herho blood alco content was twice the legal limit. she's being held wut bond. two ofhi taylor'sren were among the five killed in the crash. a local coast guard officer accused. plafring a local terror attack could be released soon. christopher hasan only faces weapons charges now. prosecutors say he was planning a massive attack. he made his own illegal gun silencers and compiled a has list including -- hit list including predents and supreme court justices. authorities say they must provide more evidence t keep him in jail until the trial. the manle accused of ading the militant group involved in the bombings in sri lanka is dead. police announc that he was killed in one of the easter blasts inside a hotel. a total of six explosions killed 253 people. officials t lowered death toll
