the state of virginia, maryland, only along t eastern shore. here's the whole storm. you see the rotation spinning here. there is that line. stil seeing a tornado watch in effect around the fiphiladelphi area. moving out of our area. tomorrow something different. movingim on in just in tfor the weekend. now to a story you first heard on news 4. a manhunt for a suspected arsonist wanted for setting a fire outside the national archives. that is the billing that houses some of our country's most treasured documents. the i-team scott macfarlane broke the story today. he's in the newsroom with new >> wendy, this is similar to an incident last week in new york when a man was stopped with a gas can and lighters in st. patrick's cathedral. last night security cameras outside the archives captured images of a person dressed in darklothes and a hood walking away from archives. on the right of the screen you'll see a glow.

those are theme fla where a gas can was set on fire. security couldn't put it out so they calledc. fire which did so within a few minutes. a wider image from surveillance video shows the person making an escape across that busy street. holds hives of course american treasures and atracts tourists from across the nation. the building's public museum had closed just two hours before the incident. our r security officer in control center was monitoring our cameras and almost immediately saw that there was a fire senrting. and theveral of the officers ran out with fire extinguisher, attempted to put it out. by that time the fire wasbiretty against the wall. >> news 4 obtained still photos of the gas can believed to have been used. we see some of the burn damage along the marble. crews will be cleaning awayhe mess left behind. they are still looking for the person who ignited the flames at the archis and are looking for

tips from the public to help find that person. m scott macfarlane. back to you. >> cameras are everywhere. scott, thanks so much. we are starting to run out of finrs now to count these cases in our area. once again, thieves targeting an atm at a 7/11 in ntheast washington. but in this most recent case, things got a bit more violent and now the feds are getting involved. that's because by our account we e quickly approaching double digitings in terms of attempts. news 4 mark segraves has our story tonight. >> reporter: this time it was the 7/11 here on south dakota avenue here in northeast d.c. a truck t crashingough a window in an attempt to steal the atm. this time the suspects attack the employees inside the store. once inside they forced two employees to the ground. thm robbed the of their personal property. >> reporter: while the bad guys got away again, they had to leave their truck behind stuck in the window.

sources say the fbi is now aware and coordinating with local law enforcement. it's become a regular occurrence twe typicall 2:00 and 4:00 in the morning always at a 7/11 crooks giving new meaning to smash and grab. smashing through the front nindows of a store with a sto truck, then grabbing the atm. sometimes the crooks make off with the cash machine. sometimes theyn't. but they always leave behind a scene of wreckage.w in the past feonths there have been at least nine atm deat deaths. police found three of the stolen atms in an empty lot on fire with one of the stolen trucks. the truck used in this morning's incident looks vey much lik the truck used in another atm theft. today's video shows one of the suspects carrying a pick ax that sources tell news 4 they used to

disable the surveillance cameras. as things get back to normal, theem window rns boarded up and the atmut of service. sources tell us the fbi does not have any active investigations open at this point, but these crooks have caught the attention of the feds. in northeast, mark segraves, news. now despite this more aggressive approach in this latest attempt, no one was seriously hurt. the lead investigator on the case tells us it's concerning ta him tt the thieves appear to be getting increasingly violent. my> the police chief at the u.s. naval acade is out of a job after an investigation into claims of sexual harassment. "the cital gazette" is reporting chief lance royce was fired yesterday. the naval academy spokesman would not specefy why roy was dismissed. only saying the navy takes the security and safety of its members seriously. e spokesman said the harassment investigation proved, quote, inconclusive. would not comment on whether it

rs completed what the allegations consisted of. also new details in the case of a fairfax county man accused of killing his wife and then shooting himself to cover up that crime. he needed a cane to walk into court today. in court with two very different views. julie carey has a story that you are only going to see here on news 4. >> laslo, his defense attorney says he's a crime victim. prosecutors call him a calculated killer. he was just indicted for the murder of his wife donna,he charges coming more than two years after the mom of two was found lying on her bed dead of a gunshot wound to the head. but today in a bond hearing, the defense attorney characterized his client is a victim of violence too. p pent was taking a bath when he felt a pain in his stomach and

daalized he'd been shot. soon after that hihter arrived and found her dad still lying in the bathtub bleeding and called 911. then whi on the phone found her mom shot to death. the defense attorney didn't say who might have shot him, bke for bond so the defendant could be wit his children while he awaits trial. the wrosecutorghing in with a much different take calling pentek a cold blooded killer of his wife saying, quote, it's clear she was executed. he went to extreme lengths, including shooting himself in the tub to hide thisfact. while also telling the judge a gun was found in mrs. pent hand, the bullet that killed her could not have been self-inflicted. prosecutors say there was a secondun found in the bathtub with mr. pentek. the judgeenying the bond request saying he poses a danger. he's set for trial in early june. julie carey, news 4 frm.

the woman who admit td being a secret agent for russia will spend 18 months in prison. butina was sentenced to 18mo nths. she will receive credit for the nine months she's spent behind bars. th former american university graduate student used her contacts with the nra to gather information for moscow. butina bleed guilty to conspiracy. she is the first russian citizen convicted of crimes relating to e 2016 election. though her efforts were want connected to the kremlin's electiondd meng. president trump is now referring to the special counsel counsel investigation as an attempted coup. he said he didn't need a gun to stop it. the president spoke at the nra annual meeting in indiana earlier this afternoon. mr. trump has long touted the group's support. that group spent more than $36 million to help him in the 2016

or actuay over a road. 98 avenue, this is right near the skating rink in that region. you can see that tree down across that road. that road is closed. numerous trees down. also numerous trees down in portions of charles county, st. mary, down into portions of calvert county as well. ards montgomery county we saw some trees down too. most of the rain, heavy rain is gone, but we still have some moderate rain i here in through portions of charles county along calvert county, route 2, route 4. still seeing some showers and me light rain aroundhe d.c. metro area. take that umbrella with you. tornado watch onlor the eastern shore. no longer for our area at all. it was until 9:00, but they did bringt down and canceled that for the rest of our area. here's the storm itself. the line around here, but we still have a lot more to go. again, this is an upper level system. it's going to move through. once it moves through, we're going to see something different for tomorrow. that's going to be some cooler air and a relief from the

this is acly wellington street. what we have here is a small school bus that actually has wires down on top of it. you can see those right there. and weere able to get a closeup view of there is actually students and a bus driver on that bus right now. om the looks of things, they're trying to assess the situation before they go ahead and off load the passengers. so right now i'm thankful for the fact that i don't see any ambulances on scene and it doesn't appear there will be any injuries. they want to approach this very safely and make sure nobody is put in danger. as we follow this from above, we'll bring you more as it becomes available. coming up, susan hogan joins us with the rall of a product that could be dangerous to infants. plus i

we want to go back to some live pictures. folks, it was a violent afternoon. the storm may have moved out from a lot of us, but this is some damage of a tree that looks like it was split in two. these pictures again from lanham where a school bus with kids and a driver on it had some wires draped across it earlier. no signs. we heard from brad on chopper 4
