made their way off of this bus and into their parents arms. is is what it looked like a few minutes ago. utilityorkers pulled that strand of lines off of the top of that bus and it was really great to see all the parents were able to make o their wayr to the front of that bus and get all of the kids off. they were rushing off and going right into therms of their parents. a great seen and no injuries. the bus is everybody is safe. very goodffews here o of wellington street. a lot of other damage in the area. we've got roads bcked and trees down into people's houses and cross streets. definitely around this area you're going to want to yatch where're going and make sure that as the sun goes down here we're not coming across any trees that haven't been picked up by utility crews yet. i would recommend making sure you're driving safely tonight. chopper 4 is working for you alh ni long making sure if anything else comes up we'll bring it to you liv back down to you. >> good advice. still be careful out there.

be okay. he did not have life threatening injuries. i want to show you how close the shooting was to the paul lawrence senior high school. you c see it right there. that is where the school is located. if you come to "n" street northwest, there's a red car on the other side of the crime scene tape and there are shell casings there. we don't know if that is where the shooting occurred. we're waiting to get more information from police. if you move over here, there is a crime scene van on the other side. that van just pulled up literally i'd say a minute ago on the other side there was a dark colored car with shattered glass on the rear. and on the side. rear window. back out over here i want to tell you police are continuing to gather evidence. this news is breakingri they will us updates as they become available. they have not given a us information about a shooter. they have not released the name of the man who was shot but again, police tell me that he is

ing to be okay. the shoot be happened about a hour ago. live here in northwest d.c. shomari stone, news 4. a manhunt for the suspected arsonist who set fire outside an american landmark. >> the story in the nbc washington app. scott macfarlane broke the new about the outside the national archives billing in washington. >> scott joins us from the live desk withe latest on this investigation. scott. watch your screen closely. you're about to see a person dresd in black wearing a hood or hat walking away from the outside of the archives. shortly after you'll see a glow of flames coming from the right side. a police report says the person ignited the gas c to cause the fire. security at the archivedn

coul stop the flames, so they called d.c. t firefighter do so. a wider image fromnc surveile video shows the person making an escape, running across the busy road. the archives holds america treasures and it hosts tens of thousands of visitors. the billing's public museum had closed just two hours before this inciden somebody could have really gotten hurt. the billing could have got significant damage. we also have very important documents in the building, so obviously a fire is dmental to that. >> the archives released still photos of the gas can used. we can see burn damage along the exterior. the feds say they are still looking for the person who ignited these flames and they're hoping for tips from the public to h.p them find that person at the live desk, i'm scott macfarlane. back to you. >> let's hope they get some tips. thank you, scott. another week, another at mrk

theft attempt. once again, the thieves ran isoo me trouble and did not make off with the cash machine, but investigators point to more aggressi behavior with this one. with the would be thieves attacking workers in this case. and as we run out of fingers to count all these, the feds are getting involved. markves has our report. >> this time it was t 7/11 here on south dakota here in northeast d.c. a truck crashing through the attempt to steal the atm. this time the suspects attack the employeese insidthe store. >> once inside they force two employees to the ground. they robbed them of their personal property. >> while the bad guys got away, ey had toeave their truck behind stuck in the window. sources say the fbi is now aware of these incidents and coordinating with local law enforcement. it's become a regular occurrence typically between 2:00 and 4:00 in the morning, always at a

7/11, crooks giving new meaning f smash and grab. smashing through tnt windows of the stores with a stoltruck, then grabbing the atm. sometimes the crooks make off with the cas machine. sometimes they don't. they always leave behind a scene of wreckage. in t past few months, there have been at least nine atm thefts in maryland and the district. >> we're definitely examining all cases and we've been working with all our law enforcement partners. >> police found three of the stolen atms in an empty lot in prince george's county onneire with o of thetolen trucks. the truck used in this this morning's incident looks very much like the truck used in another atm theft. today's video shows one of the suspects carrying a pick ax that sources tl news 4 they used to disable the surveillance cameras. in the district, mark segraves, news 4. s>> someone threw a phone in president trump'irection as peak at the stage to

certainly alludes to otheres is he o never came right and apologized. he was pressed by the women on "the view" why don't you just apologize. i'm sor about the way she was treated, but he was the chairman. i covered those hearings in 1991. he did make the decision to cut the hearings off before she could introduce her three defense witnesses. so thatsi is controveral whether he gets quickly past that. still is a front runner, the best name recognition and a lot of momentum during the first 24 hours going directly after the president and trying to make the case that he is the best equipped to confront and challenge. >> well, let's talk about the current president, andrea. the muller report. it's been a wk now and an epic power struggle is shaping up etween the white house and democrats. the president is vowing to fight all the subpoenas, including not allowing don mcgahn, the former white house counsel, to testify. egn he do that and what is the democratic strat here? >> well, the strategy is to

subpoena, go to court, slugt out. the president's strategy is despite all the precedents, the clintonmpeachment and a bevy of other cases that go all the way back, that congress does have oversight authority, that the ways and means committee can get his taxes without subpoenas, but despite all of that, his strategy is to run out the clock. and if ty keep slugging it out in court, it will already be n primary seaso before anybody gets anything done and then they'll have to back off. this is going to be an epic struggle and we're going to be interviewing sally yates, the former attorney general who was fired during all of the beginning of the administration. she has a lot to say about the mueller report which is still in a lot of ways, despite the president saying there is no collusion. when you drill down into it, even some republican lawyers,

you're watching news 4 at 6:00. now to a story you'll only see on news 4. allegations of a coverup for murder. >> we learned newai det today in the case of a fairfax county man accused of killing his wife then shooting himself to cover up the crime.

>> in court today two very different views of that man who wants to be home with his children while awaiting trial. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey has the story. >> reporter: it was a murder mystery. a teenage girl arriving home t terrible scene. her mom shot to death. her dad also suffering from a gunshot wound. neighbors worriedbout the impact. >> his daughter is going to be traumatized by this. >> reporter: then this more than two years later, police made an arrest. the wounded father indicted as th killer of his wife and mother of two donna. but today in court laszlo pentek's attorney said his client is also a victim. pent was taking a bath when he felt a sharp pain in his stomach and realized he'd been shot. soon after that pentek's teenage daughter arrived at the house. she first found her dad still lying in the bathtub bleeding and called 911.

then while still on the phone, found her mom shot to death. the defense attorney didn't say who might have shot laszlo pentek, but asked for bond so the defendant ce with his children while he awaits trial. the prosecutor weighing in with a much different take calling pentek a cold blooded killer of his wife saying, quote, it's clear she was executed. he went to extreme lengths, including shooting himself in the tub to he this fact. the prosecutor also telling the judge while a gun was found in mrs. pentek's hand, the autopsy revealed the bullet k thatled her could not have been self-inflicted. prosecutors say there was a second gun found in the bathtub with mr. pentek. the judge denying the bond request saying pentek poses a danger. he's set for trial in early june. in fairfax county, i'm julie carey. newsay4. a df action in d.c. bicyclist sending a message to the o mayorne week after the death of one of t.ir own a group of activists creating

this memorial. it's a powerhtl site rig outside of city hall today. david sullivan was killed last week by a stolen speeding minivan. the city has an initiative with the vision of eliminating all traffic deaths by 2024. it's been coming in phases with new bike lanes and clear intersections. demonstrators say it's not enough. >> i know. i mean, people a getting out here driving huge vehicles that can kill people and they're on their phones or not paying attention. i mean, how many lives do we have to pay for to get change in the city? >>y cycling safet advocates want lowered speed limits atyoss the ci and an end to right turn on redtintersections. gonzaga high school is celebrating ts nervous, but students have uncovered ties to

slavery. david culver went back to his alma mater for a discussion on the painful nspast. >> ie gonzaga college high school, purple pride is always present. watch as the students trade cafully when walking past the field. recently uncovered documents reveal the painful history. waaround the time i founded in 1821, the washington seminary relied on slaves. >> if there hadn't been slave labor that worked the pltations, it may well have never started. >> perhaps most striking, students made that discovery. seven of them volunteering over two years. they spent days at georgey opportunituniversity, one of the first institutions that acknowledged its own connection to slavery. the students relied on the connection to historic documents. se you start to feel a connection to the slaves as you track them.

>> the students identified five slaves who worked there. yne them, gabriel who they can onl envision from words. >> they followed him from georgetown to new orleans where his fate was sealed. >> he tried to pay for his freedom, but the students believe he ultimately died in louisiana enslaved. >> this is a document wie didn't think we could find. it's gabe's bill of sale. we knew it had to exist. >> forgotten until now. >> in that way we are his family. remembering him and trying to resurrect him. >> his story has comeif to l through this research. >> the leadership and faculty encouraging the students as difficult as the discoveries may be, keep digging. >> this history i not easy. much of it is ugly. we haven't sugar coated it. >> yet they are puttingt on display. >> because it's our history. >> it's something we need to acknowledge and only then can we move forward from it.
