justin finch is live in bethesda now with reaction to all this. good morning. >> reporter: goomorning. we spoke with whitman students who found that image hurtful in one word, they say. the principal says it's one reason why this behavior simply cannot be tolerated. it turns out he says an image was first seen on line in a private account, then shared t manyimes afterwards. the principal saying, too, the students involved here are going to face serious consequences under the county school's public conduct code. they also said the image was rerted to police here as a hate bias incident. it was, of course, seen by students, staff, and many others o found that image deeply disturbing. students here tell us that they do not believe that this is whao their sch is about. >> i like a to say we have supportive community in which everyone's welcome. it doesn't feel good to know that you come to school here and there are people like that, especially people being treated like that. and if i knew before hand, i

would have done somethin >> reporter: in a letter home to parents, the principal here also encourage encouraging families to have tough talks about the consequences of social media, as well as the importance, too, of respng your peers, eerve those who are not for you. live from bethesda, justin finch, newsu. >> thank yo a similar incident is uer investigation at a louigun county hh school. the principal at stone bridge gh sent a letter home to parentst saying tome students allegedly sent racially insensitive messages in a group chat over the ekend. a letter from the school principal says in part, quote, the derogatory and racially inappropriate statements made to the female students in this group chat on saturday night are unacceptable. he goes on to say, the loudoun county sheriff's office is investigating, and the children involved will be disciplined. the fairfax county chapter of the naacp has taken and sta against virginia governor ralph northam. the group is urging commonwealth

democrats against taking money from him or having him appear at their events. this comes nearly three months after a photo surfaced from northam's medical school yearbook showing him in blackface. the naich says she head resign. in a stement released yesterday, the group criticized other elected officials who were backtracking on those same calls,naying it is a indication of an even greater lack of moral compass within the democratic party of videotape. 6:05. this morning, newed calls for safety changes on the george washington parkway. >> last night an early evening crh killed a taxi driver, left three pple hurt, and snarled traffic for hours. this happened during e atvening rush in the bellevue area of fairfax county. boeing the north and southbound lanes had to be closed. a taxi and vw bug collided head on. the cab driver died at the scene. two others were airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening u ines. a local lawmaker says the crash is a reminder that work needs to be done to improve

deputy attorney general rod rosenstein has less than two weeks left on the job. rosenstein appointed special counsel robert mueller to investigate russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. he says he will step down on may 11th. the man charged wh killing five people at the "capital gazette" in annapolis is changing his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity. jarrod ramos originally pled not guilty to the charges. his lawyers say that he suffers from a mental disorder and didn't understand what he was doing last june was wrong. now a state psychiatrist will evaluate him. his trial is set for november. meanwhile, a maryland man pled not guilty in connection to terror an isis-style attack at national harbor. police arrested rondell henrynt last uthorities say he stole a u-haul in virginia and intended to use it to run into a crowd an nati harbor. henry is charged with transportation of a stolen vehicle. he has not been charged with anr terrm-related offenses.

an indicator of your risk for an early death? researchers at michigan university say yes. they've just completed a study ofin the l between smell and illness. the final results determined that people who couldn't identify 12 common odors were nearly 50% more likely to die within ten years. poor accepts ofwn smell is kno to be an early sign of parkinn's disease and dementia. a disturbing study shows children with asthma are not using their inhalers properly and may n not getting the correct amount of medicine. researchers with the americanco llege of allergy, asthma, and immunology surveyed 65 pairs of parents and students, rather children. 97% were using it incorrectly and were putting themselves at risk of nothe controlling t asthma. experts say allergists should watch children use their inhalers to be sure they know the proper technique. now to a story that seems straight out of a james bond movie. perhaps "austin powers."
