venezuela. what happened when people on both sides gathered at the country's embassy here in d.c. good evening. first at 5:00that breaking news. a frightening day for parents, students and teachers. a story we have been working on all afternoon. live over woodbridge. this story has just taken a dramatic turn. >> in a news conference justag moments prince william county police chief told us that the gun that was fired inside a classroom atilton high has just now been found. it has been missing all afternoon. >> now, that school is still on lockdown right now. as you might manage, parents and kids in thechool are not happy. >> but no one has been hurt. police say aci student acntally fired that gun when he went to show it off in art class shortly after noon today.

jae julie carey. the parents had some strong words for the police. >> reporter: for what could have happened to their students, then it went to anger a while ago around 4:30 when police came out and held a news conference. the police ching telli parents that the gun that had discharged in an art school art classroom earlier today hadot been located. parents had been under the impression that the student had be detained. the gun had been found. police were doing a routine sweep of the building. frustrationed their to the chief of police and as you said, he just returned here to the microphones a few minutes ago to reassure a parent they do have the gun now and the school superintendent told parents they are going to start dismissing students shortly. in fact, you see behind e right now the buses starting to pull in. hundreds of students in that school very anxious to go home. now, let me tell you about the new details we've lutrned

this gunfire, this one gunshot that happened inside the school. it actually happened at about noon today. it was in an art classroom. a gun discharged and later it was discovered damage on a trash can, damage in the ceiling, but at the time the gun went off, we're told that the student came up witry a cover sto and said it was actually a balloon that had popped. that is why no one knew where the gun was. but again, parents didn't have that information and in fact, they're upset that they weren't notifi of the lockdown until much later. but again, at this hour, the police chief is tling us they do have the gun. the school is safe. mo important thing, no one was ever hurt. they are now starting to dismiss students. let's take a listeno whatne of the parents told us a little while ago afterhat first confusing news conference when the gun was still missing. >> the immediate message we got is that everybody's safe and the

kids immediately when the gun went off, the gun was detained as well as the kid. now they're saying they don't even have the gun. >> how do you go for hours? you needed to look online at the news that was first updated over five hours ago. how are we just now finding this out? you want to give us false information? >> you can see chopper 4 right now, the bus rolling into hilton high school. we've said all along this student has been detained. his name and picture already circulating among people on their cell phones, thrgh turally because he is a juvenile, we areo not going t naming him and we don't yet know what kind of charges this student may face from what's happened iide hilton high school today. back to you in the studio. >> a lot of drama there. thank you, julie. ou an county high school teacher is under arrest. she's accused of having inappropriate communications with students. allison brl is a marketing

her identity because she fears for her famity's safe, but she remembers the night of april 19th. >> i just got offrom my part-time job, trying to get some rest. i laid on the ocouch. april 19th, she says she was singing songs to her slyear-old daughter before she fell aeep. moments later her boyfriend started yelling. >> shots fire shots fired, get down and we're crawling to safety to the back of this couch. >> reporter: several bullets were fired. one shattered her window. another gliding through her wall, terrifying her family. >> glass in my eye.n i was o the ground and i was crying. what if i would have die at if my daughter would have died? >> it's a question that still haunts her. she says a month earlier a brick was thrown throu herindow. she filed a police report and officers are investigating both cases. right now she says she's trying

bu stephen moore's latest remarks come as he's being considered as the nominee for the federal rerve. appearing on cnbc, moore said a drop in earnings for men is the biggest challenge to our economy. he went on to say he wants everyone's wages to rise, but said, quote, people are talking about men's earnings. they've risen. well, medium weekly earnings for women have gone up about 4% since 2010, bu women still only earn 80 cents to the dollar compared to men. moore has not yet been officially nominated to the fed. the governors on that board serve a 14-year term. it's an areaopular with joggers and nature lovers and today anel unwelcome devment for all the people who use the trails near the chain bridge. district police tell us gangs may also be lurking in the woods not far from that bridge. police discovered some new evidence today as they investigate a body found there over the weekend.

mark segraves working this story. mark, what you have learned? >> reporter: good evening. since the body was discovered on saturday in the woods just down river here from chain police have been here every day, but today their focus shifted to a new location and we can tell you the fbi has now taken an interest in this case. a spokesperson for the washington field office of the fbi tells me they are now sharing information with d.c. police as they communicate, again communicate with d.c. police about this investigation. this is the spot where a fisherman made the gruesom discovery. a mutilated body lying at the base of this tree. >> he was suffering from multiple traumatic injuries to his body. head, neck area. he was msing a hand. his other hand was so severely injured that it was barely still intact. >> not far from the murder scene along per in the woods the potomac river we came along

staying onopf breaking news, the lockdown has been lifted. the police chief told us the gun that was accidentally fired inside a classroom today has been recovered. there was no one -- none was injured. the student who brought the gun to school has been taken into custody. it has been part of our city for more than 150 years. but providenc hospital will no longer offer emergency care. within the past hour, we watched asre c unfurled the banner covering up the word hospital on the side of the building there. our pat collins is live for us in northeast d.c. with a closer look at what this closure will mean for a lot of people. >> reporter: jim, they're just calling it providence now. they've covered up that word

hospital. and as of tonight, our city's oldest general hospital is nomo . there's just a plaque there today in a scruffy old park. way back when, providence hospital was in a large gray tission style building at 2nd and "d" stree southeast. it was founded and run by the daughters of charity. a catholic order with those oh so familiar flying nun habits. they made quite a contribution to health care in our city. today at the site of the old providence i talked to d.c.n historiaohn d ferrari. >> it was an open and inclusive hospital that acceptedll patients and all doctors and led in that way. >> reporter: those daughters of charity did quite a job. >> they didin ed.

>> reporter: it's official. here it is in the paper in that little print that nobody reads until it's too .late notice of hospital closure. april 30th, 2019. providence hospital closing its acute care hospital services. it's a big loss for our city. in a word, what caused providence hospital to close? >> i'd say that you had a corporation from outside of the district of columbia who was sensitive to the needs of the residents who live here. >> reporter: providence was the oldest general hospital in our city. founded back in 1861. in 1956 the hospil moved to the brooklyn section of northeast. but now with the nuns gone and the ct of health care on the rise, providence hospital has become a casualty itself. >> it's a great loss. it's a loss to the community and

a loss for our heritage. >> reporter: people who run providence say they're going to redeploy their resources for primary and community based services. k but as of tomorrow, providence will be a hospital no more. jim, back to. >> sad day. we know you and your family have quite a history with the hospital and we're ldking forwar to hearing about that coming up at 6:00 tonight. thanks so much. well, this closure leaves united states medical center as the only hospital east of the river. th hospital is currently running a deficit in the tens of millions of dollars. council member mcduffy u tells they have plans to budget for a full hospital there, but that is still years away. wendy. we are working for your health tonight. researchers now say that some peopleh diagnosed wit alzheimers may actually have a newly identified disease that mimics alzheimer's.

fesday at 5 ti:30. we continuelowing that breaking news out of woodbridge virginia where a gun went off inside a classroom. the lockdown here at hilton high school a large school ended and tudents were allowed to go home. chopper 4 capturing some shots of relieved parents hugging their kids. the school was on lockdown for hours because police couldn't locate the weapon that had gone off. now, no one was injured.o we're going t hear from parents at the top of the hour on news 4 at ea00. the of filmmaker john singleton at the relatively young age of just 51 is raising awareness about an important health issue. singleton suffered from hypertension. he passed away after he experienced a strok earlier this month. again, at the age of 51. joining us with a closer look at this is nbc'seff bennett. jeff, we were talking to you about white house, capitol hill politics. i understand you have a personal interest in this topic of hypertension. >> that's right, wendy.

it's great to see you. look, hypertension, high blood presre affects african-american men more than any other group in the world. so more than 40% of african-american men have hypertension, high blood pressure and they don't know it. for african-americans, hypertension tendso show up earlier in life. it's more severe. and there are more severe risk factors to include heart disease and stroke. and premature death. we know of course that john singleton sadly died of a stroke at age 51. medical experts that we talked to today say that early detection is key and so are intervention. today we went over to the b baptist church and talked to some doctors there, talked to the chur board of trustees. every tuesday they feed the needy but also do free blood pressure screenings. six of the men who were ll screened, a of them had high blood pressure. one of them was so high he was taken to the e.r. while we were doing our shoot.

you just saw some footage there of john singleton. as fans, remembehis ground breaking work, his family is focused on thessue of high blood pressure. it does not have to be a death sentence for people who can't find a way to lower their blood pressure through lifestyle changes. there are lots of medications. it's the kind of thing that can bemanaged. so certainly that's the kind of thing that family wants to focus on. that's the focus of my story tonight. >> another thing thatps out at me, it is called the silent killer, but john singleton was a wealthy man, an educated man. he looked like he was in good shape. he's not the type of person that you tnk would not be aware of this. so what does that tell you? >> right. it's called the silent killer. the doctor we talked to today said the symptom of high blood pressure is there is no symptom. so i'm not particularly familiar with john singleton's health background,ut that's the big issue. it doesn't matter if you're rich or poor. ef you don't know, if you had

57, a 30 degree temperature shift here between richmond and pittsburgh. we're going to get in on the cooler numbers tomorrow. at least some of us. amelia, for us this has been a tough forecast for the better part of a week. doug, we were lamenting over the forecast for tomorrow last week and it's still really trucky outre there because we' going to have such a big temperature spread across the . ar where does that front set up exactly? here's what we're forecasting. there's the chance for patchy drizzle tomorw morning. we're starting off at around 60 degrees. we're only in the mid 60s by lunchtime with plenty oflos around throughout wednesday and an isolated shower later in the day tomorrow. most if not all is looking dry. here in the d.c. metro area, a high of 71. if you're north of metro, we're talking about temperatures only in the upper 60s. if you're south of the metro area, high temperature tomorrow around 80 degrees. frederick, maryland, a high of about 67.
