still closed this morning. in the districtnd westbou66 after the roosevelt bridge, right side blocked. we are following breaking news in montgomery county. it aechts happened yet again, robbers smashed through the front window of a 7-eleven looking to steal an atm. >> news4'sst j finch is live at the scene for us with more. porter: just imagine being inside the september 11th when a pickup truck smasheevthrough. thi jump out and make off with that atm. that's what happened in the big mess there at this tech road 7-eleven close to 3:15 this morning. montgomery county police telling us at least two thieves were inside that pickup truck, and here on scene they tell me theyd got in an out very quickly here, striking overnight at this store in the 12200 block of tech road right off the columbia pike. a place where people stop very

and professor is demanding change at a local school. he says his grandson was called the "n" word and threatened with violence. >> this allegedly happened tuesday at horace mann elementary school in d.c s michael aarys his grandson, 6-year-old max, was running to lunch with friends when another student called him the "n" word and threatened to shoot him. a police report wasle and a letter went home to pants. dyson says this isn't the first time something like this has happened at school. >> what do you o aboute systematically? what are the institutional mechanisms that can be put inpl e to, a, be proactive and address this kind of situation, and b, raise the consciousness so that young people and staff members are-- are aware? a the d.c. school system said the allegations under investigation. >> we're getting word about concern among parents at a mr. chairman county school on. tuesday a gun went off in a classroom at hilton high schl. now some are wondering if enough is being done to keep students

safe. the student bught the weapon into the building to show his friends. parents say it was two hours before police and school offdials realize the gun had been fired. while no one was hurt, parents say that wasted time could have been the difference between life and death. coming up in our next half hour, you will hear from the parents h and learn they say can be done to improve safety. it's 6:05. students atnc charlotte are still struggling to deal with tuesday's deadly campus shooting. a large crowd gathered last ght for a prayer vigil to honor the victims. 19-year-old ellis parhere and 21-year-old riley howell were killed. ho tackled the gunman as the shooter opened fire in the classroom. lice arrested the suspect within minutes after arriving. four other people were hrt in nge shooting. addi to the tension in charlotte laht nig, another deadly shooting took place near campus. one person was killed an off-campus apartment complex. police say t victim is not a student. we're also told the iident has

welcome back at 6:23. the district's plan to tackle homelessness appears to be working. >> that's according to the city's annual count of its homeless pops of population. theotal -- homeless population. the total is down 5% from last year. family homelessness decreased by nearly 12%. the number of single adultou witha home went up by 3%. still, officials say the report overall is good. the district plans to open about three additional short-term family housing centers next year. many of you love sharing photos of -- with your friends and family on social media. >> but as consumer reporter susan hose an explains, you may -- susan hogan explains, you may be sharing a lot more personal information than you realize.

a local high school. liince william county po say the 16-year-old who brought the gun to hyln high srool in wooge may be connected to the shooting of a student last week. >> no one was hurt tuesday aft noon, but parentsid it took hours for school officials to realize a gun had gone off. >> for two hours if they were -- the sense that it happened, they were literally walking around the school as it nothif nothing happened. how do we breent this? do the -- prevent do the kids have to have backpacks in the school? obviously it was concealed in a backpack. >> police soces say not getting a lot of information from students contributed to the delay inng findi the gun. many students reported seeing the gun earlier but didn't report it until after the gun went off. stoday forecast i set to take -- today fairfax county is set to take steps to make schools safer for students. the school board will make a major decision involving motorized partitions.

>> this comes afr the death of a third grader. megan mcgrath is live in fairfax with details. megan? >> reporter: the hope here is to prevent a tragic accident like this from ever happening again. tonight, the fairfax county school board is expected to vote in favor of shifting money from the reserve fund to get safety improvements going faster. now, was m of last year when third grader wesley lapicky was killed by a motorized artition at franconia elementary school. he was helping a teacher operate an when he was -- operate it when he was caught between the wall and the waretition.- the board is partition. the board is expected to free up money to install safety sensors in the existing per fashions. it would -- partitions. teit would dect a person in the danger zone and stop the motor. the school board is expected to shift money from the reserve fund so the work can be done this summer. >> we will be retrofitting 127
