from the church's steeple.nj no iies have been reported. and the cause of that fire has not been determined. the new life baptist church may sound familiar. molette green was just there a few weeks ago for an "in the community" segment. the church worked to put on a free food market for families during easter. hope they can rebuild. and this morning, fire investigators will continue to try and figure out what sparked flames fifth a ft. washingon -- flames inside a ft. washington senior home. >> it's possible it was a bolt of lightning. the fire started in the attic yesterday afternoon. residents heard a loud bang and smelled smoke. a nearby church helped prince george's county firefighters move those residents safety. nobody was hurt. in tenants are pretty -- some tents are pretty sure it was hit by lightning. >> lightning hit right over my apartment, 4:30. >> reporter: what did it sounds like? >> just a big clash -- big, big clash. >> several apartments were damaged by smoke and water.th red cross is helping those residents with a place to stay.

someri ftening video you're only going to see on a woman had to scream for help when a group of teens cornered her in her apartment building. this happenedes wednday morning in southeast washington. the woman in the red dress you can see is ahe door, she's trying to get into r home. a group of teens threatened her and tried to robher. the group followed her into her building. a family member heard the woman aming for help and chased the kids off. the woman was not hurt. day a former nanny will be sentenced for killing an 8-month-old baby in glenarden. she was found guilty in february of abusing and killing the little girl in 2016. she was caught on home surveillance camera force feeding the baby and causing h to suffocate. >>e right now ther's a search for two missing elderly women from montgomery coryty. >> co smith is at the live denks with the latest on this. cory? >> reporter: good morning. we get missing persons reports into the newsroom almost daily. it's rare to have one report

barr to be. this guy didn't even have good enough sense to have bo jales chicken. >> he likes kfc. after the hearing, congressman cohen said barr was appointed simply to be president trump's, quote/unquote, fixer. >> plastic chicken inhand. 5:07. the democratic pool of presidential hopefuls grows even bigger. colorado senator michael bennett announced he is running. bennett, considered a moderate, graduated from yale and worked in the clinton administration. he had plann toenter the race last month but was delayed because he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. if april he had surgery. ays spokesperson no edditional treatment is needed. bennett is th 21st democrat to enter the race. this morning, baltimore has a new mayor. y jackoung says his predecessor's restion will only make the city stronger. young automatically became the mayor yesterday when katherine pugh resigned. pugh is accused receiving roughly $800,000 from a hospital neidork and others that d business with the city of

attending sses. probably many of you are dreading the commute into the district this mo work is being done to help in the cause that could cost you itre money. megan mcgrath w more on the proposal before the d.c. council. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. that's right. charging tolls to drive in certain areas of the district or perhaps charging a fee to cross a bridge in d.c. the d.c. council proposed a study to look into that. according to our news partnerwt p radio, the goal would be to cut down suggestion in certain areas by charging the fees. new york city recently approved congestion pricing that is very similar to this. the study would take a year ande would weigh t pros and cons. the results would be released by july of 2020. tolls in d.c., hough, have been very controversial in the past. some city leaders are pointing

eaten bait laced with a pesticide that's been banned in the u.s. because it can kill birds. meanwhile, environmental activists met with local leaders to discuss the promise of a green you'll deal maryland -- green new deal in morldaryland. they talked about the positive impact of moving to clean and renewable energy. proponents say the deal would and stop climate change improve the residents in moortgomery and prince gege's county. d.c. mayor muriel bowser n announced a ew plan that would llow thele sa of recreational marijuana. >> he introduced legislation that would legalize selling it as early as next year. that's despite a congressional ban. currently residents can legally grow and possess small aofounts marijuana, but they cannot legally purchase it. in the past when the d.c. government considered legalizing sales, congress warned that even holding public hearings would violate federal law. mayor bowser says she disagrees.

welcome back at 5:23. disappointment turned to outrage in montgomery county over proposed cuts to school music programs. a choir intrucktor at rockville high school and a band teacher at northwood high school are now scheduled toome part time. wtop reports parents voiced concerns awe this k's board of education meeting. complaints at last month's meeting successfully reversed plans to make cuts to the music program at springbrook high sc hool. >> disappointing that the artsa prs have to be first to go. montgomery countyhools are also contesting a recent ranking of the country's best higthschools released week by "u.s. news & world report." here's a look at which schools made theut -- thomas jefferson

high school for science and technology in alexandria, virginia, ranked fourth nationally. t.j.'s always top n. in maryland, walt whitman high school in bethesda ranged 93rd. in the third, benjamin banneker ranked 178th. the magazine changed the criteria for the ratings to give a more comprehensive look at the schools. the montgomery ysunty school m is questioning the rankings and released a message to families saying it believes the list is inaccurate. the school system says the report fails to take into account reading and matt ticks data that would have -- mathematics data that wouldave taken into account the prince george's county schools. they did not respond to the concerns. you have to take it with a grain of salt. >> they look at data. you have to wonder why they didn't get access to the numbers there at th school district they're talking about. big changes coming to a csx pharmacy that -- a cvs pharmacy. we were there as crews cleaned out the vvs on maryland avenue

handling of the report. >> nbc news is reporting they want to go straight to the source, robert mueller. chris pollone joins us live with more now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's rit. in the past the house judici wy committee negotiating with the justice department in order to have special counsel robert mueller testify about his investigation into the trump campaign's ties to russia and possible obstruction of justice following that campaign. now we're told nbc news has learned that they are negotiating directly with representatis of robert mueller himself. all of this follows a contentious and unusual day ev for the capitol here yesterday when the attorney general failed to show up for his hearing in frontof the house judiciary committee objecting to the method of questioning where decrats wanted to use staff attorneys to ask him questions as opposed to the members themselves in some cases.tt
