ron, good morning. >> reporter: hey, craig. good morning to you. investigators are still on the hunt for a motive in this case trying to see what would drive the suspects to open fire on students at this school. the juvenile is identified as a female but public defender says the client identifies as male. in the end, one student was killed, eight others injured. devon erickson spoke just one word when asked if he had any questions about a protective order against him. >> no. >> reporter: as he faces a slew of criminal charges including murder. >> devon was definitely one of the main people there causing problems. >> reporter: 16-year-old kevin cole is a former stem student and a good friend of 18-year-old kendrick castillo, hailed a hero for saving lives after sacrificing a his owner charging the shooter. >> when i was with friends, we found out what was happening and

for just talking about this in the midst of their terrible grief. i know you've been in the community a lot this last few hours. are people saying? >> reporter: one of the ways that a lot of k thes are dealing with their grieving process is by sharing stories about kendrick. even the small ones. his love of robotics. they say he was always so quick to help anybody out if it was jump starting somebody's car in the parking lot to helping them with their homework. they say he was the best of they and the also say they want his name to be the one remembered ftre. they want to shihe focus away from the shooters and towards the memory of the person that saved their lives. and they setp a memorial fund in his honor. >> gadi schwartz, thank you very much. police have removed more than a thousand guns from a home in an upscale los angeles neighborhood. officers there said they found several rooms cluttered with rifles, pistols, and ammunition. they stacked those up in the

the book is full of hilarious stories we've been hearing in our family all my life and that go a long way to explain the curiosity and sense of humor that have watched and read my dad all theseyears. >> reporter: in the summer of 1960, my skinny 15-year-old father arrived at lake of the ozarks ready to indulge in the pleasures of a midwestern vacation paradise. what did you think of the first time seeing the lake? >> we thooiht it was gng to be speedboats and girls in bikinis, wild. d i got down there and they gave us a couple of shovels and toeoots and pointed us out the open air septic system. >> reporter: that cesspool out was knownowhead lodge as the chili pond. did you have protective -- >> no. they didn't have protengive anythi back then.

>> reporter: you put a bandannaa over your ? >> no. that was considered unmanly. >> reporter: for seven summers, my dad was an employee of his larger than life uncle ed. an army colonel in world war ii who gave the orders around the lodge. >> he was born to be a big shot. he barked more than talked. he barkeder ords at you. drank scotch when he got up from his. that and at night. he drank a l of scotch. intimidation was a big thing. whenever he fired somebody, they wouldn't leave. he wasn't effective being a bully. >> he probably forgot he fired them anyway. >> yeah. >> reporter: uncle ed and life t the lake felt like a million miles from my dad's comparatively sleepy existence back home in champaign, illinois. what was it like driving around lake of the ozarks riding shotgun in his big car with him? >> he had two cars a year. convertible in the summer.

you feel like you're in a dream. i thought it was how people must get around in heaven. >> reporter: my dad was eventually promoted to bellhop and occasionally was forced into kitchen duty. >> on some nights when the chef, chef glen, we'd walk by the pool and notice he was laid out by the pool. >> reporter: had a few too many to drink? >> yeah. some days it was too much. he couldn't make it back to the kitchen. >> rorter: did you have any experience cooking prio >> no. one of the waitresses said we made it but i don't think we got any repeat customers. >> reporter: over a nearly 50-year career on print and on tv, my dad has told the stories of america's strangest characters. >> want to race? >> reporter: an appreciation he first gained at the lake. >> we hadn't been to disney world or anyplace.

what to do. why did you want to focus on o twenty-somethings? >> women start off with their salariesower than their male counterparts and they never catch up. i think especially younger women are getting conflicting women on how they're supposed to be. scrappy, working really hard, working around the clock, eager, ambitious. but you're also supposed to get the right pay. it's hard to nail it. >> it' a tricky one especially starting out. what's your leverage? you can't pound the table and say i demand this, i that.nd >> no. and it takes a lot to get there. and daniella's story which is why i partnered up with her is so inspiring. she told me her story because she'd been wnking o "morning joe" for t years. we talked for two years. she's a dreamer. she grew up in ohio with four siblings. not a lot of money at all. and not a lot of security about what her stas would lead her. she had goals and wanted to be here in america and make it. she started applying for jobs n

all over york city. she was working full-time. and lied on all the resumes and said sheed in new york city because she was so worried that where she lived would deter them from hiring her. >> i love this story. you did tell your employers, i'm here. i'm local. you weren't. you got a call back for an interview then what did you do? >> it was p. diddy's bad boy ente sainment. theyaid can you come in tomorrow? i said yes. i couldn't get on a plane or drive. so i went to the greyhound bus website and got an an 18-hour bus through the night. nine stops. cleaned up in port authority. >> that right there, that's enough right there. >> really shows you have to have all those qualities you need. you showed them right then andt ere the moxie and determination and rewhurcefulness. 's your advice to women who are starting out as you are? i mean, you've written a book now with mika thzezinski. 's good for your resume.

what advice do you have? >> say yes to opportunities. don't think about having the perft job or figuring out how it's goingo end right bay way. if you're struggling getting your foot in the door, take s i onp at a time. find a way to find a yes. s >> said yes to that job. it had no pay. she got four other jobs. she finally got to nbc. started all over again and that's how we ended up together. >> i was going t say, i know you have a goody for talent. you gave all the book money to daniella who is just starting out and makes sense and is completely you. we're in the setting -- >> yes. >> i'm supposed to be the interviewer. but i actually -- you guys both have great tips. but for nailing a job interview, what are some of the tips you have? >> you want to do your research. is the y job're applying to more creative or more corporate. do your research and then keep it simple. don't ovdo it. >> project confidence. that's a tricky one.

you don't want to project arrogance but confidence is good. >> it's all about prepveation. for e two minutes i spend preparing i get one minute of confidence. premare, prepare, prepare. >> understand your audience ise thext tip. what do you mean? >> when dealing with the r, think how they want you to answer the question. and think about the energy in the cues they're giving you in that room. ore they trying to make conversation or they look like they're in a rush? and tweak your style to fit that. >> connect. check your body language. connect and resonate. >> that's really important. >> really important. for body language, the three things you have to remember, a great firm hand shake, eye contact throughout, and posture the entire time. >> all right. we have some questioners that our viewers sent in. >> love that. >> hi. i'm emma from orlando and i want to know how soon after an interview should you follow up

they'reg to hire you. that's when you can ask those ncestions with confide maybe even in the first conversation because they're loong to get you. but in the beginning, you're pitching yourself. >> before i let you go, this issue of confidence but not entitlement. youeet young people on your show every day of the week. you obviously have an eye for alent and you found a gem here in daniella. how do you view that issue? what advice would you give to young people? >> it's all about timing. if you read the book, you'll really get a sense of all the different things you need to be trying to do at the same time. and you can. and you will thenind your way. the book really walks you through that. because that confidence is important. that sense of when you're given an assignment, that eye contact, i got it. you want to be able to saye all thwords. i got it. unless you don't. then ask. but you got to develop that innfidence by devel your voice in the workplace and also knowing your moment to pounce. which daniella did. her timing was perfect.

soda. we're going to mix it up a little bit. have it all combined there. and we put cake flour in there so the cake will be soft and tender. you sift your flour. why? >> to get the lumps out. so we have a smooth batter and smooth cake. >> what's the next step? >> we already have going ournd butterur sugar. we're going to add in our extracts as well as our anoil. we're going to let this mix and it's going to get nice and fluffy. >> what kind of oil? >> this is canola oil. then we're going to add in our eggs which at home you would let this mix a little bit longer and get nice and fluffy. you add the egg one at a time. let them get completely incorporated. >> mom, how i shedoing? >> she's doing okay so far. >> all right. that's got to be hard working next to mom. >> it is, it is. oh, it is. >> i can only imagine. >> i'm still the boss though.
