signing the bill into law. making abortion at any stage of pregnancy a felony. me only exception, when the health of theher is at risk. under the law, abortion providers could face up to 99 years in prison. the sponsor of the bill admitting her goal is to challenge roe v. wadeth long-standing supreme court decision giving women the right to have an abortion. >> this bill is to address roe v. wade. and to let hopefull that decision go back to the states so that states can make the laws that are most appropriate for their people. >> reporter: 28 states have introduced similar restrictive aborti measures. last week georgia joined three other states outlawing abort tn at first sign of a fetal heartbeat. with two new conservative justices on a bench, the stage is being set for a supreme court challenge. >> if it ends up in the supreme court, you will have women. they're going to get abortions

if they need them. they'll have abortions in back alleys. >> reporter: the debate now reaching far beyond alabama. an unlikely opponent of the bill? christi christian broadcaster pat robinson. >> it's an extreme law. they want to challenge roe v. wade but my humble opinion is that this is not the case we want to bring to the supreme court because i think this one will lose. >> reporter: the hashtag you know me taking off on social media. sparked from a tweet by busy phillips. now hundreds of women against alabama's new law sharing their own emotional abortion sries online. despite the governor's signature ponents insist t fight is not over. the law on the books here in alabama and other abortion laws now making their way onto the books in other states will ben challenged i court. and it's all expected to wind up before the u.s. supreme court

which is exactly what conservative lawmakers say they want. savannah? >> all right. thank you. >> let's pick things up now with pete williams down i d.c. pete, let's talk about where we go from here. walk us through theext steps now that governor ivey has signed this into law. >> reporter: planned parenthood has already said it will file a lawsuit. the judge bound by supreme court precedent will almost clearly declare it unconstitutional. then the 11th ccuit which will also have to strike it down. the supporters of the law can then ask the supreme court to take the case,ut there's no guarantee the court will do so. in fact, the odds seem to be against it. the law may be its own worst enemy because it's a blunt force attack on roe v. wade. and the supreme court is much elre lik to take up one of the cases now bending involving laws that seek to rirestct access. and remember, the supreme court for the most part chooses the case it will hear. and it c sldply decline to

activating the flotation devices on the charter helicopter. ang pas ferry rushing to rescue morales. >> i drove right towards the helicopter. instinct. >> reporter: this is the second rescue for the ferry cap pin in the past ten years. that ferry company instrumental in hping to rescue passengers from the miracle on the hudson in 2009. what exactly caused the helicopter to come down is unclear. the chopper was sub substantially damaged in the crash and will investigate it as an ax. morales had only worked for zip aviation since january. before thate worked for a chelicopter tourpany in south carolina for five months. the incident comes more than a helicoptertour crashed into the east river a killingll five passengers on board. that pilot blaming engine failure on a harness tripping a fuel cutoff switch

now, the fire department here in new york said an employee at the heliport was also injured when he was hit by flying debris. just amazing that no one died in that accident. >> anne thompson, thank you. the fight over immigration returned to the spotlight today. the president set to reveal his latest attempt to revamp the immigration system. the story nder is on at the white house. what exactly is the president s proposing tmorning? >> reporter: pds is going to unveil that plan in a rose garden speech that will take place this afternoon. it's been spearheaded by his son-in-law jared kushner.in the two key hees here, they are looking at more construction of the wall and on immigration creating a more merit based system that would prioritize high skilled and educated workers over those with family already here in the u.s. that merit system, it would include a civicstest, factor in age, ability to speak english, job offers, and education

and welcome back. today food. that's right. the recipes at the "today" cafe. we got some fantastic recipes that are made. steve jason is the executive chef here. 30 years here at nbc universal. always good to see you, chef. by the way, some of the recipes are actually inspired b our today food segment. let's get started. there are some breakfast items. some lunch items on the menu. >> the are. >> okay. so let's -- >> a little bagel toast here. >> what do we start with? we got almond butter. toast this up. and we spread it here. spread that around. then we've got all these things to garnish with. >> this is almost lik something if you're doing a brunch, you could make a bagel bar.
