he rose to national prominence close to 20 years ago as the church wastering a crisis. he was elected as president of the u.s. conference of catholic bishops in 2001. there he led the effort call for zero tolerance policies against sex abuse within the church. gregory also comes to d.c. as the church is trying to work its way through controversy here, as well. the fallout from sex abuse allegations affecting the formery and now outgoing -- former and now outgoing donald wuerl. he was accused of a sexual abuse accusation decades ago. wuerl has denied any wrongdoing. as we come back live, the installation scheduled at 2:00 p.m. it wasst scheduled for mathews, but there is so much

intere interest, it will stream on line. likely to be a hot ticket in d.c. back to y >> justin finch live athe basilica in northeast. thank you. today an unprecedented hearing for the manonvicted of fueling d.c.'s crack epidemic in the 1980s, i rayful edmond ran the largest andt deadlies drug trafficking ring in the city. now prosecutors are asking that he be released early. he is currently serving life witho parole. edmond once oversaw an operation that brought 1,700 pounds of cocaine a month into the district. prosecutors say 1997 edmond began helping law enforcement understand hee workings of t drug trade. he helped prosecutors convict other dealers. they say that's earned him an early releas but not everyone agrees. >> if you would have told me back then that weould still be talking about this now, i would have told you got to be kidding

get back to the breaking news in virginia. a deadly crash may impact theng mornicommute. >> darcy spencer is live in centreville now. what are you tell us? >> reporter: this morning. we're just getting to the accident scene. we're driving on-66 eastbound. you see from the camera here we are approaching the crash scene here. it's right in the area of route 29 in centreville. from what we understand, this nid happen i the 2:00 hour. and you can see here that traffic is building here. earlier when we patted the scene, it -- passed the scene it looked fine. as me traffic gets on to the roadways, you can see what's happening. there's a lot of vehicles here as part of the invtigation. rginia state police are here investigationing the crash. when i pass by, i can see a tractor-trailer appeared on the shoulder of the roadway. and you could see a smaller passengerhicle that appeared to have crashed into the back of

you know, it's no secret that traffic in our area can be a nightmare espially on the beltway. vdot is proposing a solution make your commute easier. vdot wants to add three miles of new 495 express lanes. these would run in each direction from the dulleintoll road terchange to the maryland line near the american legion bridge memorial bridge.te vdot hos a meeting to tell people about the plan and to get feedback. >> intending to make it wider. that puts itself into places where people have homes. >> we do not anticipate having any total residential relocations. th will need to take some right of way along corridor. we don't have those exact mbers. >> vdot's environmentalas sessment for the project is expected to be cometed in the fall. good news for commuters this morning. it looks like d.a.s.h. bus drivers will o not gon strike. a final vote is scheduled for tomorrow concerning pay increases and pensions.

justin, good morning. >> repo er: good morning. you know, many are saying that wilton gregory is uniquely qualified to become washington's next archbishop of the diocese. he led more than 15 years ago a charge to put out a zero-tolerance policy of sex abuse within the church. they also say he brings a fresh perspective to the post as a person of color. he will become today the seventh chbishop of d.c. but the first african-american to hold that post. he's from chicago originally and was ordand -- ordained in 1973. he's now 71 o years and was the former archbishop of atlanta where he was installed in 2005. he succeeds cardinal donald wuerl whoresignedamid agencies that he was -- allegeses that he was involved in a sex cover-up decades ago. wuerl has denied wrongiing.
