shoulder area. i-66 near 29 in the centreville anywhere in northern virginia. it happened around the 2:00 hour. our news partners at wtop are reporting that this was, in fact, a fatality. a little bit earlier we were able to get video the actual crash here. it appeared that this involve aid tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle. from what we understand, that vehicle smashed into the back of the tractor-trailer.ve seal hours ago. there are still roads shut down here. at least the right lane. traffic is getting b on the three left lanes, but there's still a lot of backups because police are here, fire rescue are here. and we just passed the scene once again. we can see that the car is still here. there's still a lot of work for police and investigators out here. delays will continue throughout the morning commute. melissa, how can people work around this mess? >> we've been seeing a lot of people headed on to 29 t try and avoid it.

now 29 is getting busy. very understandably. you'll have to just plan ahead to allow aot of extra time or commit to another route like 29. eastbound 66 at 29, this is where darcy was just driving throube. everybody g pushed over to the left side of the roadway. it's a five to six-mile back up at this point. a lot of delays. you can see 29 right there as an alternate. that is an option for you. bethesda, outer loop before the american legion bridge, disabled vehicle, that's a tractor-trailer that lost a wheel. rest of the belt ay isokay. and another new issue, if riverdale, utsoound, as you're crossing the beltway you'll see that down. 270 is slow to buckeystown but then opens nicely. uck? it gorgeous way to get your tuesday started. our first 90-degree day of the year was yesterday. today we will not be 90 degrees. a refreshg morning and a cooling northwesterly breeze for

cherrywood lane, a crash reported, as well. back to chopper, you can see the scene from above. darcy spencer is out there in the backups. tell me what you've been seeing. >> reporter: this has been a frustrating commute for thousands of drivers who are stuck in the backups this morning. we are right there with many of those drivers in the backup. let's show you our camera from side the news truck. you can see this is part of the delay. as you mentioned, it goes back eight miles. earlier it was back to manassas. but as traffic has continued to buil build, it's only gotten worse this morning. the crash happened in the 2:00 hour. you can see several hours later, the impact still being felt by computers just trying to get to work. this is 66 eastbound heading in toward the district. the crash scene is around 29 and centreville. it looks like delays are going back toward gainesville. you were talking about some of the alternate routes.

we went do to suddenly road. i can --udley road. i can tell you that is clogged. people are trying to get around it, but also the second roads are ogged, as well. it appeared that there was a tractor-trailer involved and a passenger vehicle hithe actor-trailer and partially went under the semi-truck. we have learned that this was, in fact, a fatal crash. that's from our wtop news partners. so virginia state police are investigating this crash. and again, they're working to get the scene cleared this morning. this is a fatality so it's going to take a while before they getw everythingrapped up, take their measurements, and to fully open the road. there are lanes open, again, trafc getting by sloetsly this morning. back to you. >>er darcy spenc for us on i-66. ank you. 6:32. let's che in with storm team 4
