i'm meagan fitzgerald. >> i'm pat lawson muse. we start with a story that surfaced three months ago and vershadowed virginia politics since. a racist photo found on the medical school yearbook page shows a man in black face next to another man in kulux klan clothing. northam said he was in the photo and apologized during a news conference and later heaid, quote, had a chance to step back nd take a deep breath and looked at the picture and said this is not e in the picture, end quote. and now the school is investigating, reading in part, we found no information that the photograph was placed in error though we acknowledge there is scant information on the subject 35 years after the fact. attorneys leading the investigation spoke just a few s moment ago. >> with respect to the photograph on governor northam's personal page, depicting an

nbc4. >> thank you. metro is putting hundreds of cars back into service after investigatingha ra door malfunctioned. this is video of the door not shutting this weekend at the dunn loring station. metro blames a master control issue for the problem. the 3,000-series cars were cleared to be back on the tracks one day after being pulled. metro said they inspectedhe fleet and found the cause. about 15% of metro fleet is made up of 3,000-series cars. now to the weather. how about a repeat of yesterday? >> ikn w. amelia, what are the chances? >> we'll see temperatures in the 70s once again. we'll be a few degrees warmer but overall another comfortable spring-like day out there. however, i'm tracking plenty clouds right now with an easterly component to the winds okd temperature of 67 degrees. as we loo 1:00 p.m., most of us will be in the low 70s, about 73 in washington and 70 in frederick and manassas.

>> ann: you're watching "news4 midday." welcome back. now to a bombshell from s. customs agents. >> i.c.e. is calling out the prince george's county detention center for releasing two suspected ms-13 gang members accused of killng 14-year-old girl. 16-year-old jose fuentes ponce and 17-year-old el escobar are both in the u.s. illegal. they're from el salvador. they were arrested on murd charges last may. a person fromustom enforcement said both were rel beautsed the prince george's coty diplom diplomat -- department of correction said they were transferred to a state-run facility and they have not commented about the case. this may -- this month they are both charged with killing 14-year-old ariana fuentes diaz,

trends. but nce 2007 it looks like we've seen an increase. what kind of numberare we talking about? >> so fortunat still youth suicide, so from ages 10 to 19 is what we're talking about here, they are still rare. so we're talking about maybe one in 10,000 kids committing suicide. and the jority of those are boys, 80% are boys. but we have seen this significant increase inhe last decade. there is a doubling of suicides for girls, ages 15 to 19, and then the numbers for boys have gone up by about 30%. so numbers are on the rise.ut bhat is i think very interesting and i think that something that will surprisewe viers is that despite the ad as they areas now and having gone up over the last decade, we are still nott t he point where suicides were in thearly '90s. so in the early '90s more kids in this age group were committe

suicide. so we are bad, these numbers are not good, but it is not as bad as it as 20-plus years ago. >> which is interesting because i think automatically people might assume that social media is to blame to why young kids are taking their own life. but that is not necessarily the reason because we didn't have soy al media in the earl'90s. so what is theis reason for >> we don't know exactly. so there are several theories. e of the theories, when it comes tohy more girls are dying from suicide, is becse girls are using more lethal means. so girls tend to make suide attempts much more often than boys. boys, however, represent 80% of all suicides. and that is because they tend to use guns or lethal means. girls tend to use poisoning or overdosing. but in the last ten years there have been greater number of deaths in girls from hanging. which is a moreal leth mechanism or means. so that is probably accounting for some of this. the other thing is there arele peopho say social media must

have something to do with this in the last ten, 12 years. i do agree. i think social media is playing a role just from what i see in my practice. again, it doesn't explain why better ins still were the early 1990s when thedocial me didn't exist and there is access to information and kids will go on to commit suicide. s >> if i'm a parent watching, i'm terrified. because that is a parent -- any parent's worse nightmare. what do parents need to look out for and do. we have 30 seconds left. o >> yes, whenever you see something concerning personality changes you have to take it seriously. want to make sure you are not hesitant to seek out. there is no problem with saying we want you to talk to somebody and see what is going on and we're worried about you but you ned to ask the tough questions, in particular you want to ask your kid, you have been having any thoughts about hurtin yourself in, particular have you had anya thoughts ut suicide. i promise no study has shown that by asking that question are you creasing the likelihood of
