nbc washington app and on nbc4 at 4:00. now to the steadily and destructive weather tearing across the midwest. research and rescue efforts are underway in missouri after reports of at least two powerful tornados hitting the state overnight. at least three people were killed in golden city. and the state capital of jefferson city. it is left with catastrophicag damand that severe weather moving east. >> storm team 4 radar is clear right now. but storms are expected later today in our area. meteorologis amelia draper joins us with more on what we can expect out of this. >> hey, molette, well here is the latest on the radar. i was track a lone shower up in carol county that moved toward baltimore and elsewhere we're dry. hazy sunshine and already warm out there. we are much warmer today than yesterday. that was increasing humidity and

coo help -- and could help fuel dunderstorms later to. this is the line of thunderstorms i'm tracking that could bring severe weather between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. impact is some really heavy rainfall. so if you are out driving this afternoon for that evening commute, thereis a potential for some reducedvisibility out there. i also can't rule out some strong gusty damaging winds and there is a smallsk but it is there for an isolated weak tornado and some hail as well. something we'll monitor. i have to ay, this is a really tricky forecast. the models are having difficulty initializing with at is ppening out there right now. and they're only bringing us scattered showernd thunderstorms this afternoon. not widespread. meaning we might really not see the severe potential ally play out. so here is a latest with future weather. this is new. and we're still mainly dry across the area. 2:00 p.m. maybe an isolated thunderstorm and 4:00 p.m. ae severunderstorm elsewhere and keeping it completely dry mainly cloudy skies

ndfall and no storms could make landfall or see in between. and check out what they are thinking. we have the average number and then what they are thinking this year. so major hurricanes are think hour.two to just hurricanes in general, they're thinking about four to eight and named storms about nine to 15. we've already had andrea named so we're on to the b'sow. and back here at home, we're talking about thehance for severe thunderstorms this afternoon between out 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. i think they'll be widely scattered in nature if weo see them. severe best chance for weather is looking to be north of washington in this enhanced ar up through pennsylvania. but even in the d.c. metro area down through southern maryland and northern virginia, have the slight risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon on into the early evg hours. heavy rainfall, gusty winds going to be the biggest concerns. but i can't rule out some hail and maybe an isolated, weak tornado. this is a tricky forecast. they said that earlier and i'll say it again. if the storms do develop they

could be severe but we might see much in the way of coverage. something we're going to keep a eye th the high temperature today of 87 degrees. winds out of the southwest at about 10 to 20 miles per hour. right now temperatures already in the 70s. 79 in manassas. 72 in washington. 70 in fredeck. look at fredericksburg at 80 degrees. the humidity will build out there as we hd on into the afternoon hours. again, high today of 87. as we look to your memori day weekend forecast, on saturday, maybe an isolated thunderstorm otherwise it is warm with a high temperature of 85. it is hot and humid out there on sunday. with the chance for some scattered late-day showers and understorms but the risks low at only about 30%. on monday, memorial day, mainly dry but humid with a high of 87. i'll have much more on the weekend forecast and also i'll be showingou future weather once again for the storm risk later this afternoon. pat and molette. o

crews will be back on the national mall trying to save a historic tree. last week we told but this mulberry tree that fell during a storm. some of the roots are damaged but experts think that tey can salvage part of tree. the first step is te stand the trupright. the national park service called thisss a witne tree because of everything it has seen in the 100 plus years >> the mall. so glad to know they think they could try to save it. >> absolutely. >> it takes a long time for a tree to go that large. o and speaking storms. we could get some storms this afternoon. what is the latest on that? >> we could get some but i'm not super convinced lookie at the lat models coming in, we'll have sometered showers and thunderstorms. the timing now looks to be

between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. if we do see thunderstorms moving thrgh the area, they could pack a punch, heavy rain and gusty winds and hail. and from this line the computer models are suggesting as it passes over e fountain -- the mountains is breaks up. and this is 2:00 p.m., we are dry, maybe a thunderstorm up around the mason-dixon line. 4:00 p.m. maybe an isolated shower or thunderstorm and most are dry. we hit' 6:00, we almost completely dry across the area. that being said, i do think that we'll see heavy rain moving through the area ding the later evening and overnight hours. for example, here is about 9:00, 10:00 p.m., pockets of heaer rain by 3:00 a.m. the rain threat is out of here. completely dry tomorrow on friday. friday it is going to be fabulous. breezy and low humidity low 80s. really gorgeous out there. today we'regr running ten dees above normal with the high of 87. friday and saturday low to mid-80s.
