4:00 pm
per hour right now. there is a tree down right there. at least a large branch. and this is exactly what we will enc nter throughout the afternoon in and around our entire area. this is a major line of thunderstorms moving through, very rare that you get a thunderstorm with a line like this making its way from baltimore all the way down to fredericksburg. a continuous line of damaging thunderstorms. winds of 60 to 70 miles per hour.re guys, wn the 4:00 hour, news 4 at 4:00 starting right how with the severe weather and breaking news whics a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for everybody. e'll be covering this throughout the night. could we see another tornado warning? yes, it is possible. but we are not seeing any tornado warning right now.
4:01 pm
these are all severe thunderstorm warnings and we'll continue to keep you posted. you've been watching live coverage of 9 weather alert. a tornado warning, down uptown d.c. >> check out the storm team 4 radar. particully dangerous line ofñi storms rolled right through the d.c. metro area in the past hour. >> and the sun actually shining right now. this place looked nothing like this just ten minutes ago. we have you covered with three hours of live team weather coverage. news 4 cameres out the scanning for trouble spots on the roads. jackie bensen is heading to a report of a tree in a homein bethesda. >> and check out the time lanced video of the storm moving through and into western virginia. reston, rather. these storms are moving so fast. where are they right now?
4:02 pm
>> normally you see a storm out there, it takes one to two days to get here but it has been beee less than a day. these moving at 50 to 60 miles per hour and racing through the area. >> potential for wind gusts up to 70 miles an hour. so with winds that strong, you will get aot of damage. >> reporter: -- a lot of damage reports. >> and let's show yhe line. we have severe thunderstorm warnings in effect from the a eastern shored this affects a lot of people. thinking about heading out toward annapolis and over the bay bridge, the bay brink widge be nasty. but everybody along this line is under a t severenderstorm quarning. so fredericksburg, waldorf, over towards bowie and prince george's county, still d.c. under that. let show you the line.
4:03 pm
you see this big area of lightning and another up toward baltimore. timing it out, we've had 441 lightning strike bes. that is in the last ten minute. and weum have nrous. >> reporter:s of trees down on houses. we'll continue to watch it. and once again here is the line. look at the damage reports we've seen. look at the one in bethesda. we have report of a tree on to the house. ouere it is. tree fellse so you know police are working on that. and we'll be out there now as this storm passes and becomesmo of a news story as we're cleaning this up. annapolis toward waldorf, stay indoors. this is e area that'm
4:04 pm
watching. this is called a bow echo. and we have some spin. we have rotation. this is a bow echo right here and that is what will drive the winds forward. so i would really be wary in this area. let's time it out as we move toward the east. just go right to the bay. i want to see the towns that are inside this reemgen eregion ri 50 to60-mile-per-hour winds. this is around brandywine, london town 4:16. shady side at 4:21 right along the chesapeake. i would definitely expect to see more trees down in some of these areas. so if you live in these area, please stay indoors, don't go out, stay in untilrobably 5:00, 6:00. anymore warnings come up, we'll bring them to you. >> what is amazing you talk about how quickly the storm moved from where it was in the midwe t. we saw thmage that it left behind.
4:05 pm
does that mean that the system is weakening ast marches its way east? >> it is weakening. we're not seeing what we saw there. we saw destructive tornaes. me i would definitely say easily ef-2, ef-3 variety i believe jeffersonity in through parts of missouri. but take a look at the radar again. watch this. watch these storms. this is yesterday. watch these storms fire up right here. here they are. this is yesterday during the day. tornadoes ongoing into southwest missouri, tornado warning around st. louis. here is the line. look at the line through ohio, through west virginia, there goes the severe thunderstorm watch earlier around 1:00. and there is the line through our area. so from missouri to o region, dangerous day for sure around us, dangerous for them. still seeing the damage there. and thousandmage inow damage in. >> and so you have that line already moving through,an but
4:06 pm
ther one behind you. is that following the same track? >> let's show the national map. we are watching in line here. once again severe thunderstorm warnings ongoinback the west. ou not expecting the same tornado outbreak, but herethe thing. the pattern that we're about to get into especially back towards this area, a lot of severe weather over the nextor week so in this region as we start to get into what is called a heat ridge, that will be building our heat into the weekend and next week, we're forecasting the first heat wave of the system. we've bumped up next week's tu temperaes into the mid and upper 90s. we'll be watching that closely. back into our area right now, severe thunderstorm warni4:s go until 5. and o until 5:00. entire area until 8:00. you see where the storms are. in prince geo he's county, ads
4:07 pm
up. anne arundel, if you live uth of annapolis, stay indoors. don't try to venture anywhere. charles county, southern prince george's couty, calvert coy, this will be through you in about anh r. notice quantico and frederngksburg, stream lightni here. we've seen the damage. they will start to tri back the severe thunderstorm watch. you will no longer be under a severe thunderstorm watch to the west of this line. you don'thave to worry t leesburg or bethesda. if you want to head to the store, sure, you could probably do it, but up see trees down in your neighborhood. you will see power lines down. never drive across power lines. you d not know if they are live or not. look at the wind damage around monassas. this is the storm that came through right throgh fairfax and eventually caused the tornado warning around d.c. let's look at a couple of hose. trees down along ashland avenue
4:08 pm
in the city of bull run.ha we another one around that same region. one more, trees down the intersection of rogue forest lane and red house road. that isn haymarket in western prince william county. we will see more in this area. be can see e wedding who rdst r they are moving at 50 miles per hour. >> and amazing that the dade started out so nice. seem like it just came out. >> yeah, youhe could feel t change though. remember yesterday, 72, plenty much sunshine and a nice day. you walk out this afternoon and temperatures had shot into the 80s. we were at 88 degrees in
4:09 pm
manassas today. that just are adds fuel to the fire. and that is why you have a line like athis, line that was already progressing from the west move into an area ofbi instaty with the high temperatures into the upper 80s to near 90. and you see what is happening. take a look. the storms have passed fredericksburg yet. 87. but everywhere on the cooler side. gaithersburg now down to 69. that is actually the low for the day. 9. and 70 up toward baltimore. as we put the radar back on the highs today, these were the original high, 91 leesburg, 88 manassasre and fricksburg. so when the storms came over, we saw one storm here in hagerstown and we saw the line and then once it came over the mountains, they really ramped up. let's zoom back in. we've been tracking this storm.
4:10 pm
let's see if there is any rotation associated with it. yeah, this rotation is aloft and this storm. and what that means is the whole storm is rotating. could we see a tornado out of it? possible. but i'm really watching for extremely heavy rain, some hail. also wind. the wind will be a big factor. this is 301 down toward waldorf. that is the area that i think is the most likelyo see the strong damaging winds right down toward quantico. d.c. downtown, we had the mornado warning. but that stor has passed us. >> so n quite out of the woods yet, but you are talking about another heat buildup for the weekend as well. will we have a repetition of the pattern from today? >> i don't think that we will see storms. we are now movin think into a pattern where we are drier and we are a lot warmer. we've seen an incredibla wet year, year and a half.
4:11 pm
and i think that we will move into a fairly dry pattern now ao we m into the month of june and july and august. we're not talking drought. i still think that we will get rain and thunderstorms. but it will be very hot a we'll have only a slight chance of shower orthunderstorms. i don't think that we'll see anything like this anymore. that being said, top porti of the original oilg, ridge, we ca stormandwe'll be tracking it for you. so from annapolis and doichb toward fredericksburg, the nasty line, lightning associated with it.toward fredericksburg, the nasty line, lightning associated with it. we continue to get calls in about lightning strikes. >> and we have a new severe thunderstorm warning for anne arundel, calvert, prince george's county and st. mary's. wind gusts with the new warning up to 70 miles per hour and a tornado. the national weather service saying it is possible with that warning. >> and once again, that is with
4:12 pm
this storm, with this one right in here. so you have this big storm and this kind of filled in that area. me let's time it out. >> and this is moving toward the east at 50 miles per hour, but wind gusts up to 70il m per hour. >> this time of day on route 0, you can't even move 50 miles an hour. there you see the timing. we expect most of this to be across the bay by around 5:00 with the exception of the uthern area down around fredericksburg. that will move into the northern neck andrnrest of south per land.
4:13 pm
not expecting widespread area of rain, but we are tracking it as cooler air trieto move in and then we're in for a pretty good looking friday and great memorial day weekend. just look at that forecast, 91 on sunday. 87 on monday.la isoed chance of showers and thunderstor thunderstorms. but most of the weekend looking okay. it is middle of next week where we'renalking temperatures i the mid to upper 90s. back to the matches now, you can hearng the beepin the back grouc ground, that is most likely the national weather service trimming some of the warnings back. this entire areao continues be under añi severe thomp warniund warning until 5:00. >> okay. we want to take a look at route
4:14 pm
50 in virginia. andca yosk secan see it is stil cloudy and the could i looks dark there. >> a traffic backed up as you might expect. >> it has been a wet -- the storm has moved o of that area. right, doug? >> yeah, it has moved out of that area. so this is very good news for the evening rush. you are looking outside earlier saying i'll wait this storm out. this storm is now passed your area. this is now passed arlington, passed d.c. if you are moving to the west, so if you are in d.c. right now and you are thinking that i need to get home bethesda or orgaithersburg or fairfax leesbu leesburg, i think you are fine going west. i would not into east just yet. give yourself more time. if you are heading over toward 50 along bowie or annapolis down toward upper maorboro oxon hill, give yourself some have a time there because the storm system continues to move through and itaiis moving fly quickly. so we're watching this entire
4:15 pm
line. baltimore all t way through our area, right down toward g. fredericksbur and it will continue to move at about 50 miles an hour out of our area by around 5:30, 6:00. and then we're looking at etty nice night later on. >> all right. on the other end of this. >> keeping fingers crossed. thks, doug. we'll let you catch your breath. and now is a rely good time to make sure that you have our nbc washington app. it is free and it wil be really handy if you do haveo in your basement or some sort of interior room in your house. we'll se you breaking alerts and let's you know what the weather is doing in your neighborhood. >> and let's go back toou d you have something new for us? >> i want to take a lookt the chesapeake bay shot. i'm looking at it. this is coming right overthe chesapeake bay xwrinlg abridge. and a lot of people wanting to leave early for the memorial day
4:16 pm
bridge. know when you get the wind restrictions, so we might see that. look at this, a lot of peoplein a problem over the bridge on the normal day. add in the wind and rain, and a harrowing experience for sure. so if you are thinking to yourself i want to get there, these storms are moving that way. and you may ve problems especially the back roads here that we all take off of 50, 404, whatever it is. we might see some roads closed. here is that one storm that i've been tracking. this is the one that is the tornado warning in and around the d.c. metro area.
4:17 pm
bowie toward annapolis, i want to zoom right into this area. this is the area we're talkingu abo earlier with the potential6 independent withes. here is route 2 coming out of annapolis. i really think we could see some strong winds here around route 2 topeard chee bay. and you see where the severe thunderstorm warnings are now. notice d.c. points to the west, we he now been dropped from the severe thunderstorm watch. we were just talking that they will drop it over the next couple minute and they did that. so no more storms.
4:18 pm
only place that we don't have a warning, southern st. mary's countli but this ne of thunderstorms is continuing to move to the outh and east at about that 50-mile-an-hour range. city cam, loo t ats show, is this amazing. to the right you see the storms leaving. to the left you kind of see the blue skies comi back t. the temperatures will start to spike again. we droppedll the way down to 69. from 84 to 69 with that rain. we'll go right back up to the mid-70s. it will get rather humid too once the sun really does come out. so a humid night. but if your kids have games, unless we got too much rain on the fields, i think that the games at 6:00, 7:00, they may be okay tonight.
4:19 pm
rain was comingdown at a good rate with this line of storms. so right now the biggest threat is anne arundel, prince charl, toward -- let's move into king gorng cou george county. a mess.lways look at the intense amount of lightning. over the last ten minutes, notice 218 lightning strikes with this storm in nd around the fredericksburg area. let's take the lightning offer of that. i want to see if we have any of the echos that we are looking at. i don't see that. that is good news. not seeing that push of wind like we did with the prince george's county a stormnd howard
4:20 pm
county storm. they had the wind and the tornadoes earlier. you still have the push right here. that bow echo where it looks like a bow an arrow, you see that right here, yeah, that is actually the wind shooting through t storm. and winds aloft are able to shoot down and that is where we have strong winds. so the winds come through the storm. they are pushed down through the service and you see here calvert beach 4:51, 5:17 lexington park. in mayersunst. mary's county no. and it goes over to ocean city. and amelia put that out. look ocean pines around 6:20. so if you left now to ocean city, you probably won't get thetil 7:00, you might miss these. but you have the potential for that coming on through. and interesting to note that
4:21 pm
they dropped the severe thunderstorm watch and also as we take alook at the 4 day and 10 day forecast, chance for storms out there on sunday. it will be hot and humid.ñi breezy and beautiful tomorrow, a complete 180 from today. no storms i the forecast. memorial day weekend shaping up to be nice. 87. the humidity is out, feeling veryuch like summer out there. and look at next week, we were talking about this earlier, maybe the first ht wave. >> and we'll change numbers. we're actually going up. the computerñr models next ednesday, they areround 98 to 100 degrees. we've never seen 100 degrees in the month of may. is itle possib yeah. maybe. but i think more likely 95 to 97 frees is whe degrees is where we could be. so we are talking intense heat.
4:22 pm
and we'll continue to keep you posted. >> you know anything is possible. >> absolutely. >> doug, thank you. we'll be back to you soon. we'll go to a break now, but the se weather coverage continues. here is a live picture from arlington, virginia where you can see power lines are down. we're looking at some of the storm damage out on the roads. the severe team -- storm team coverage continues. >> we'll have damage like this all around the region. we have the crews on the roads getting pictures anre coverage for you coverage for you j
