right now the national weather service is on the mall, htrveying the damage left from last nig's strong storm. we have new informion on the cherry trees that may need to be replaced because of the damage. and back to sunshine and a refreshing northwest breeze for w. but the heat and humidity that brought yesterday's storms will be back before the holiday weekend is through. plus president trump leaves for japan in the next couple of minutes. ahead of the trip, his administration announces a proposed rollback for sex

discrimination f transgender people. the criticism already being voiced. good morning,nd welcome to if news4 midday. >> today the national weather service is expected to realize re information about a tornado that touched down in howard county. in one community we're seeing a number of fallen trees that caused significant damage.r idents have already started cleaning up and say they feel lucky no one was seriously injured. >> the same storm system also left trees down along the national mall. news4's megan mcgrath just spoke to a tree specialist about the damage. >> reporter: there's a lot of damage here. take a look at this elm tree i'm standing behind here. we're down along the reflecting pool at the lincoln memorial. this elm just snapped at its base. and this is just one tree. we're seeing similar damage down to the tidal basin to haines

point, which meant it impacted the cherry trees. fortunately most of em are going to be okay. just a few, it looks like, will need to be replaced. crews spent the morning cutting up fallen trees. last night's storm packed some powerful winds and damaged trees from the lincoln memorial to the end of haines poi, basically following the contour of the potomac river. elms took the biggest hit but some cherry trees were damaged too. >> we ha several uproots and a lot of damage fro broken limbs, broken tops. we're still in the process of triage. the good news is, other than some uprooting, i think the cherry damage is not as extensive as people would imagine. >> picking them up is a lot of fun. >> reporter: michael dixon's job of charging electronic scootersl takes him over the city and northern virginia. >> in arlington i saw a power pole snapped ilf out in the middle of the street.re

>>rter: and so, again, the elms, trees like this one, really took the brunt of the damage. no actual numbers yet in terms of what was lost, what will need to be rlaced and what might just need to be trimmed. that's what they're doing for you, asessing the situation. national park service experts are looking at all the trees. the good news is most of the cherry trees will be okay. just a couple have been lost here. we should have hard numbers at the end of the day here. now, i als want to give a shoutout to the crews involved here, na crews as well as the contractors. this is a very busy weekend, memorial y. there's a lot of debris aroundhe and tre working long hours to clean it up before the weekend gets under way in full force. back to you. >> good point, megan, the park service is on it, thank you so much. a lot of people e dealing with power outages. pepco is reporting 579 customers without power. dominion energy is reporting more than 17,000 without power

throughout northern virginia. and there's only fivesmeco customers and 11 rappahannock customers without power. theeather being blamed for an outage and fire in this home iny montgomerounty. a candle in a bedroom caused this fire in brookvill during yesterday's massive storm. county officials confirm at least one power pole snapped in half during the storm. the familyt lives here will have to find somewhere else to stay. locally nobody was injured. we're hoping for much calmer weather throughout this holiday weekend. so far, so good, when you talk about day. >> that's true. will it stay this nice all day, chuck? >> i wishne i had good that it would be cool with low humidity through the holiday weekend. unfortunately we only get a 24-hour window of the real comfortable air of late spring before the heat and humidity of summertime come racing back in.

well into the morning, the investigation continued here at this chantilly shopping plaza behind us. weemwatched th throughout the day focus on the juarez restaurant, that adjoining painy hall andan parked right out front. investigators spending lots of time looking through and analyzing those areas. let's take you to the scene here overnight. this is the 14,500 block of route 50 in chantilly not too far from the dulles expo center. close to 1:30 this morning, police say they got a report of shots fired. they arrived here on the scene. and that is wen they found a man who had been shot. he was taken to the hospital and died a short time later. also here on scene, cellar people taken into custody and questioned about this shooting. police also telling us there were injuries here as well. one of them was a woman. >> we do believe she was present in the parking lot at the time .

we're still looking into how she was injured. >> reporter: investigators are focusing on that juarez restaurant. the woman is one of two people injured. the other is a man, he too suffering non-life-threatening injuries. neither was shot here in this event happening here overnight. police not yet releasing then e of that man who was shot or of the other victims or the suspected shooter who is now it custody. police are saying that believed shooter is in their custody and they do not believe there is now a danger to the public. however they are still working to understand what led up to an ltercation that ended in a shooting here in this parking lot. in chantilly, i'm justin finch, news4. >> thank you, justin. fairfax county police hope an autopsy will identify a bodya atund in park and let them learn how t person died. police received a tip that sent them to the area tuesday nigh they found the body yesterday

morning. they say the killing is gang-related. police do not believe there is danger to residents. police need your help to find a man who is danger and you say could strike again in the district. take a look, d.c. police released video of the person of interest in two rape and burglary cases in northwest. he's wearing a hoodie and riding a bike here. detectives say he's suspected of attacking two women in their own homes on irving and 1 stheets on tuesday and thursday. police say in both cases the ke attacker brothrough basement windows. in one case the air conditionerv was rem. in another, a screen was removed. neighbors are concerned. >> we look around and see a lot of development happening but our neighborhood is not completely safe. if you live in a basement unit, you need to make sure your doors are lock. u've got to be safe. got to make yourself a hard target. >> another look at the person of interest here. there is a$1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case. commuter alert.

stunned residents in jefferson city, missouri are literally picking up the pieces of their lives. one day after an ef-3 tornado with winds up to 160 miles an hour hevastated t state's capital. >> i wasn't scared until after we seen the damage. then i'm shaking like a leaf. >> reporter: buildings collapsed, businesses demolished. >> really, the whole ceileg camoff. >> reporter: everything in the twister's 19-mile both torn apart. three people were killed when a tornado sliced through golden city. severe storms battering the plains and midwest for a week. in oklahoma, heavy rain causing widespread flooding. >> water will continue to rise. >> reporter: no clear end in sight. the small town webers falls under mandatory evacuation but spared the worst. there were fears these two runaway barges carried by rushing floodwaters would seriously damage aam when they slammed into it.
