6:16 pm
"meet the press". >> love the optimism. >> it's time to be alive. some democrats appear to be increasingly at odds over impeachment, but the president himself cannot get over the russia probe. he mentions it all the time. what is the speaker's strategy? >> well, i thi her strategy, you saw what she was -- i think ooat she was trying to do and the president t it in another direction, she's trying to keep this what is a minority in her caucus, she's trying to keep them on the team, if you will, not going out there asmuch. so she's ramping up her own rhetoric by saying not yet, not' yet, h doing these things. she's trying to -- while she edges closer retorcally, part of it seems to be about keeping everybody on the same page as the democrats. here's what the president is trying to do. she's trying to creat a middle ground. the president says you don't get to have middle ground. you're either going to do it, let's go, or don't do did and you know what he'll do.
6:17 pm
that is, of course, i think the dilemma that some of the house democrats, i was talking to them off the record, ones that are leaning impeachment and ones that aren't. what's interesting is how both points of view end up in the same place. well, if we don't do political reasons, that's not a good reason either. that looks like we're playing politics about the presidential race. if we do do it, then all of a sudden we make donald trump politics and he gets a second turn. they really are struggling with what is a constitutional duty on one hand, a politic duty on the other, and it's not an easy decision. the president sees an opportunity to create a wedge in the party and i think in this sense, hbecause doesn't care in that sense, because it's fun. >> let's talk about the other decision he made. this decision to give attorney general bill barr the sweeping powers to declassify whatever ind of information he wants to in regard to the russia probe. criticism is really blown barr's
6:18 pm
way because of the way he handled the mueller report and a lot of folks saw that as being purely partisan revelation that he made when he put out his 4-page letter on that thing. what do you make of what this is? oat's the best and worst that can come outf this decision? >> i think that barr, whether it's fa or not, i think democrats view barr now as pa partisan because of what he put out and what the mueller report says. whatever he comes up with is going to be viewed as political. i think this is what i would call a smoke bomb.it s to create distraction. i think the presidentme knows so of these democratic investigations are going to produce some damaging stuff. how damaging, we don't know. t it's going produce stuff he doesn't like. i think he wants to think of it as a smoke bomb insurance policy. i got my investigation, youri nvestigation. what is the end result for the averageio and washington. the fog of investigation. i don't know what to make of it. and so the worst -- the best --
6:19 pm
the worst of the best case of the president is that it just is viewed as oh, they're all back and foh. best case scenario is his conspiracy theory is found to be is nd somehow the dossier the be all and end all, buve we' been down this road so manys times, it' not there. there's never been anything there. it doesn't matter what they fine, leon. i got more questions. if you just say that, that type of expression over and over again, that's al it's the echo chamb. i think it's a pitical tactic. it's pretty clever, but it's using the tools of the federal vernment in a way that should have more people -- >> concerned. in >> we're go to ask you about the 2020 we were struck about your observation on some of the most recent polls. we'll put up this graphic so you can see it at home. joe biden comfortably in the head and went up.
6:20 pm
two out of the te polls. bernie sanders, on the other hand, dropped in all three and it appeared that many of his pporters are now going to the warren camp. >> we've got three national polls in the st week. what was amazing is what they shared in common.de one was bi commanding lead and the other was sanders sinking. sanders has got a problem, because he's getting eaten away in both ends of the support. people paying least amount of attention sanders does really well. among those paying attention, warren actually beats sanders. this could be a tnary in coal mine. it looked like sanders had an inflated number. biden's entry took a bunch of those folks from him, and now elizabeth warren, i've got a plan for that. i've got a plan for that. she's sort of the tortoise and the hare. she's been going right at sanders supporters. what i don't see is an obvious person that can somehow capturea this and ke biden on yet.
6:21 pm
but you certainly see right now it could be elizabeth warren and not bernie sanders as the chief liberal adversary of joe biden. i think sanders is sowing some vul vulnerability. you poke him and he gets angry. you can hear he was ready. i think it's getting under his z ldin. >> two 70-year-o white men being then two biggest me in the race. >> e could and elizabth warren, again, she is methodical about this, but of all the people that have -- her and biden seem to be mo comfortable with the campaigns they want to everybody else seems to be angling for a thing and i think voters see through that. >> who do you ve coming up? >> we're going to have this debate about impeachment. a the congresswoman from
