it was gorgeous early on this afternoon. we're looking good here during the rest of the evening hours. ut.rain to talk a we've seen a shower or two down in the southern zone. most of the area has been dry all day. that's the way it's going to remain. i am tracking a storm system. tornado watches and tornado warnings aroun the chicagoland area. that storm system is going to have a big impact on our weather ntomorrow. c of storms, hotter weather. we'll tell you about both. see you back he in about 15 minutes. >> we'll check back with you. let's get back to the violence that's plaguing parts of our city here >> this afternoon five people shot near the barry farm rec center in southeast. >> this coming after a 15-year-old boy was killed yesterey. >> we havive team coverage tonight. we begin with derrick ward who is at the scene of today's shooting. . derrick. >> reporter: well, good afternoon again. as you said, five people shot. one of them a juvenile. all male. police have cleared the scene here. you can see it right here in the 1200 blk of sumner near the intersection with wade road.

that's the barry farms rec center back there. they have an indoor pool. we don't know any kids were in there at the time of the shooting about 2:30 this afternoon. take a look at some of the mage. we have some video of one of the cars that was in that scene. you s those two bullet holes in that car. apparently one or tw of the victims sought shelter, tried to hide behind that car. but they were apparently still hit and again, aong those taken to the hospital. we are told that everyone was conscious and breathing when they were taken away.f some oe victims might have been hit multiple times. police did release a little bit more information. they a looking for a gray or silver vehicle that was seen speeding away from the scene heading toward martin luther king, but they don't have any information about a license plate or a description. only a silver or gray vehicle seen leaving the no identities on the victims. no word about what might have astivated this. perhaps somebody coming from the store or rec center and got

caught up in the middle of this gun play in the middle of the street in the matsiddle of the . right now people are wondering what's happening here today. we are live in southeast. derrick rd, news 4. back to youha you, derrick. about a mile and a half away from where derrick is right now, a 15-year-old honor roll student the outbreak of gun violence. >> maurice scott was an athlete and a creative video production student. was killed outside a store on wheeler road in southeast yesterday. news 4's cory smith joins us live. cory had a really heartbreaking interview with maurice's mom. cory. >> reporter: yeah, erika and leon, you only imagine what she's goingg throu yes, she did muster the courage to talk to us. you talk about maurice scott and every i've spoken to told me when it comes to the future, the sky was the limit. sadly his life endedere onhe

southeast. he was an athlete and an honor student with a knack f video production. virginia xander waerhis teach >> these kids gets serious when they're still in school as juniors and seniors and that's where you see them take off with their potential. unfortunately maurice didn't get to get there, so i would have loved to see what he was going to reach for. >> reporterthe man maurice could have been is what monique scott clings to. she'll miss so many milestones, but what hurts mo t are small gestures from a loving son towards his mother that are gone forever. >> he always used to kss me on my forehead. that's what i'm going to miss the most. >> reporter: maurice scott's death is just r ising thelume on all the calls, not just in southeast but across d.c. to put down the guns and end the i asked his mother what he would want to say to folks out here. he would just say do the right heing. listen to your m and do your best to stay out of

trouble. sadly it appears maurice was trying to do just that and his life ended in senseless violence. back to you. >> oush hearts -- our hearts go his whole family. three other people werehurt but they are expected to be okay. on this memorial day we honor those who gave the last full measure of devotion. with president trump out of the country, vice president mie peent to arlington national cemetery today to honor the military men and w who have died in combat. they aced a wreath at the tomb of the unknown. he noted that last summer north korea returned 55 boxes of u.s. remains from the korean war.

to hear again. i remember us flipping in the air and spinning around and > nding. > my goodness. another tornado touched down near tulsa. 250 members of the oklahoma national guard plve been deed to help. people in low lying areas have been encouraged to pack up because the river keeps rising. 130 dogs and cats from the hardest hit areas of oklahoma are now in our local shelt. the humane society flew them to manassas last friday and they're going ao maryland virginia shelters to help prepare for more displaced animals in oklahoma. ma of them were moved from tulsa. now they'll have the chance to be adopted. something to think about. let's go back to a year ago. deadly flash flooding in maryland on this da one year ago tonight. a severe storm dumped at least 8 inchesf oin in two hours wapping ellicott city's

historic district. a natio wl guardsmanas swept away and killed. this was the second deadly flood in ellicott city in two years. now the howard county times is reporting thatfficials plan to spend as much as $140 million to bill a large tunnel to divert the storm water. >> what is the mostre bizar thing about this? this was called once in a hundred year storm that happened twice within two years. >> and that can happen and that's going to continue to happen. that kind of storm will happen more and more often as we move through cliechmate change. that to happentwo years in a row, very infrequent, but we're doing other things to make that worse up there. i'm glad to hear they're actually putting e money out there now to help with that because they need to divert the water. right now the water goes under the city a with too much water

16 years after pleading guilty to a kidnapping, he is days away from his first release. his victim is unhappy about where he isec expted to live. scott macfarfne has new mation on a story first reported by the news 4 i-team. >> tyree admitted traveling from his townhouse in herndon from januar 2002 in pittsburgh to abduct and sexually abuse then a 13-year-old. he served his timede in a feral prison in north carolina and has en transferred to a halfway house the final weeks before his full release. the halfway house and his likely future home near pittsburgh. minutes from her family. >> this is too close to home. in the most literal sense, this is all too close to home.

morning and then a good chance e for som really hot weather. one of the hottest days so far . this yea we'll talk about how long it sticks around. see you back here in about ten minutes. we are hearing for the first me tonight from the widow of a man shot to death last friday at a chantilly strip mall. steven green is accused of killing miguel hernandez. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey spoke with the victim's widow this afternoon. she says friday's incidentst rted when the street sweeper injured her. >> reporter: you can see the fresh wounds on her face and head. the big brui on her shoulder. she says these injuries were inflicted by the man now accused of killing her husband. steven green who worked here cleaning the shopping center faces charges of murder and malicious wounding for the incident early friday mornin maria says she and her husband were having drinks at this

restaurant when he left to get the victim's widow was standing outside the restaurant when he begansing his leaf blower but she says he blew it right into her face. when shey asked him whdid you do that that, he allegedly replied because hispanics are trash. she and green exchanged more words. then she says green hither twice with the leaf blower drawing blood. our telemundo partners helped to translate the interview. >> he attacked me. he hit me with a blower. my friend said hey, don't o that. after that he take the blower to my hand and hit me again. >> when her husband a returned saw her bleeding, he reportedly went after green. there was gunfire. miguel hernandez was found bleeding in the parking lot near this camper. he was rushed to the parking lot where he died. green stayed on the police until he died. now maria is left to mourn a man she calls a good person.

a deal can be worked out. in a tweet yesterday he said rolling thunder would be next year. for hanked the pentagon that. so far the rolling thunder organizers say they have not made any changes to nseir pla to quit. an update to a story in fredericksburg that we reported on a couple of years ag we've now learned the fredericksburg city council has approved a committee to decide th fate of a slave auction block. the committee formed earlier this month. residents want the block removed and put in a museum. the report mandates that a diverse groupof people make recommendation on short and long range priorities for the site. the cmission will meetgain this week. over the last decade more than 60 people have died in crashes on indn head highway. that makes it one of the most dangerous roadways in the entire region. if not the country. now much needed safety improvements are rolling in. prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins spoke with an activist who brought about

pressed, clean rsion. this is the skin and cleaned version from this. >> if you're going to attempt grilling fish at home, what are things people should be aware oi when they tak on? >> first thing, obviously, get the freshest fish you can. grocery store, not so much. you want to buy from a local seafood market or something like that. make sure it's good quality, it smells good, clean. bring it home. you want to cook it as soon as possible. if it smells like fish, it's bad fish. reu want to clean the fish. when you're dy to clean it, pull it out of the refrigerator about 15 minutes and let it come up to room temperature. that way itill cook quicker and help keep from drying out. first what we're going to do is take a little seasoning salt. this is the salt we use over at the walrus. salt and pepper at home. >> walrus being a local restaurant from national harbor, are you sourcing local fish?

>> yeah. u we a great company called congressional seafood. they sort from of the best fish from the chesapeake and around the world. they get deliveries daily.e seafood mark on the wharf are great. whole foods too. if you talk to the guys behind the counter and they sound like they can talk about fish, it's usually probably a good idea. >> if you go to the fish market and say give me a starter fish, what would you ask for? >> if this is you fst time grilling fish, swordfish is the way to go. salmon is easy to gril ce you're comfortable with that, then you can go with something like a sea bass. once you're comfortable, you can get some with the skin on. >> leave it to the pros for that. >> exactly. y first t want to do is make sure your grill is hot. second thing, grease it up just a little bit. we use a little vegetable oil o

it to help keep the fish from sticking andake sure it gets kris -- crispy. you put it nt on down you leave it alone. if you keep messing it, that's when you're going to pull it up and pull the fish apart. >> youncget one c right? >> one turn. as soon as it kind of cooks and you can turnhit, t it's cooked. we actually use something called a fish spatula. it's a specialty for fish. it's a little bit thinner, more delicate. if you use the bigger spatula, it will tend to be a little bit too rough. you just want to get under there and move it. if it's still stuck, that o is a little stuck, it stilled nes another minute. >> we got our first flip on the fish. >> we did it on theirstide. once you flip it, it's really going to depend on how you want it cooked. if you want it a little bit more
