shootings over the course of w days, district residents are worried these will become the signs of summer. >> the summer is coming. >> mildred king apman knows what it's like to have violence at home. when she's not at work, that's usually where you'll find her, rolling through some of d.c.'s toughest neighborhoods. as summer approaches, the group is fine-tuning their approach to keep violence to a minimum. >> my strategy is to stay out here ll summer long driving throughout the city, getting out of my car talkingo them. >> reporter: it's that one-on-one engagement with community members and at risk youth she hopes will keep people safe. pointing toward activities and job opportunities. but she can it alone. and is calling on community and church leaders to step up in the coming months. >> eating time is over. it's time to put foot time in place. it's going to takeoung people, some young males and young females and myself and the community to truly get involved.

bortion law in indiana. but the court upheld part of the same law, a provision requiring abortion t providero dispose of fetal remains by o burial creamimation. they also skipped the bathroom battle and declined to hear a challenge to let transgenderu stdents use their bathroom of choice. joe biden just issued a statement about being attacked by president trump. mr. biden held his statement until e president returned to washington. this is seen as a pointed rebuke to establi the norm leaving politics at the water's edge. susan mcginnis joins us to break it all down. >> to many it was no surprise es that the prident broke that norm. he clrly had one 2020 rival on his mind whilee was overseas and his comments there are coming under fire here.

erika. a shortchange is coming to the smithsonian institution for the first time in 175 years. an african-american has been named to head the museum system. as news 4 mark segraves reports, the man taking or is somebody who you're probably very familiar with. lonnie bunch has a big smile and a big personality. he's best known for overseeing the creation of the national museum of african-american istory and culture. but today he got a standing ovation in the smithsonian announced bunch has been elected as the new director of the entire signatumuseum overseeingr and space to the national zoo. >> lonnie is eight great scholar. he was the leader and so what he did for the smithsonian there ig

new charges against the man accused of drugging and then sexually assaulting women he met at a bar in chevy chase. >>cary mome unfolding inside.b fr 47-year-old phillip cantor slipped the date rape drug into her drink, carrying her to a nearby aparent before raping her. the woman told investigators she wou woke up and was naked and felt paralyzed. this happened in january. since then more women have come

forward. >> there are three other victims coming forward. this spans a several year way of operating. >> one victim says she was raped back in 2007 when cantor lived in garret park. another victim says she was raped in 2010 and the latest woman to come forward says she became his victim in 2011. the montgomery county state's attorney office says tchs t was same m.o. >> meeting women in bars and taking them out for drinks and suddenly they wake up according to the charging documents not knowing where they are, having blackouts and him essentially raping them. >> now they're asking the public to take a good look at cantor's mug shot. police want anyone who may have been a victim to come forward. in montgomery county, mig eagan fitzgerald, news 4. a an electric scooter in fender bender with an ambulance today. the man riding the scooter admits the crash was his fault.

he was riding along constitution avenue when he hea sirens and knew he had to pullover but didn't realize how close the ambulance was and hit it. the man was not hurt. police have released n details about a deadly shooting we brought you as breaking news yesterday morning. the man who was killed inside a car that was riddled with bullet is a 26-year-old. detectives say that they think he and others were in that car around 5:00 monday morning when another car pulled up beside them and opened fire. no one else inside that car was struck. police still need your help in ming an arrest in this case. today michael avenatti pleaded not guilty to charges that he defrauded his most stmous client the adult film starmy daniels. avenatti appeared in court in new york on federal charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. prosecutors say he pochated money tdaniels was supposed to receive from a book deal. the once high-flying lawyer was

dollars, news 4 has learned one subject of the investigation, the former sheriff, has died by bicide. julie carey hasen following this case since it first became public earlier this year. >> as her linked in page shows, jennifer mcdonald was t executive director of the economic development authority. tonight she's under arrest.di the ment the first in a virginia state police investigation targeting former county officials and others. this was t scene chopper 4 captured back in april when investigators executed a search warrant at the offices, office seizing dou seizing documents needed to determine where $17 million had been diversed intorsonal use. a grand jury has been at work hearing evidence and late last we returned that first indictment against mcdonald. state police say the probe s continueut so far no other

indictment. former sheriff also a subject of the invtion. he recently decided to retire s early a the controversy surrounding him grew.t buhe told news 4 he did nothing wrong and would work to clear his name. but today his attorney confirms the former sheriff died by suicide at his warren county home. the attorney for the former sheriff told me today he had not been notified that he was facing an imminent indictment. state police spokesman declined say whether or not he believed he would soon be arrested. in northerna, virgini'm julie carey, news 4. virginia senator tim kaine visited a fairfax county middle sool expecting to talk about gun safety but it turned out to cover a whole lot more than that. the senator fielding questions from "eighth grade"eeighth grad. the questions ran a much broader gamut. >> middle schoolers are very
