today. but first our reporters are fanned out across tonight surveying the damage. >> in virginia we begin innd maryla. >> take a look over. here rocks bury road.of is one dozens of roads in this area closed due to downed trees and power lines. >> the chaaw s came out as the wind and rain died down. the afternoon violent weather left many streets and several major roads in howard county blocked by downed trees. the scope of the damage was something not seen in this area in some time. several large homes on edge wood way in glen elk had huge pieces of roof ripped off. homeowners scramble to get the holeswi covered tarp or pli plywood. expecting more rain. gerous. rain so it's da we probably have another six

roofs to tarp tonight. >> to the west. a historic farm property was hard hit. at least one huge old tree sliced through this brick home. a woman was home at the time but she escaped injury. in a field the wind pulled off the tin roof of a horse stable and flung it hundreds of yards away. national weather service is expected on th ground here friday. to do a physical survey of the damage. >> just before 7:00 p.m. a tornado warning was issued for virginia. >> live. what are you seeing? >> good evening. the storms rolled through. here are some downed trees and branchs that are down. still people are trying to survey the damage. now this storm came through here

with heavy winds and the national weather service is confirming a tornado did touch down. nearby. let's show you video. photographsthat viewers sent us. this photograph of clouds showing a small rotation. this onehe shows t tornado moving through. some people did take cover and were watching news 4. and made sure they took the precautions when they hear about what's happening. heavy winds snapped treeth blocked i 95 northbound. there tr thousandsop of pe without power. downed trees and debris closed some roads. back out re on jefferson davis highway. there are still 20 trees down in glen dale. which is nearby. chief meteorologist told me about that. >> all right. thank you. a lot of big trees downlocking roads throughout the area. >> video from chopper 4 gives us a bird eye. view winds strong enough to pull full trees right out of the ground.

>> doug joins us now. what the path of destruction tells us about the tornado in howard county r >> this waseally amazing watching this. earlier this afternoon. coming in right arou the 1:00 hour. rd through howa county and northern montgomery. that's a storm there. another one in fair fax. another one towards spots. and look at the severe storm ports with the storms. that to the north and fair fax. an. the south i want to show you the video now the video of the storm that came through with the confirmed tornado. into howard county. w this is what were seeing. look at all the trees. simply sheered off about half way up and that'sis why thas a tornado. and it has confirmed. any time you see a tree like thie complly sheered off. these aren't flipped over. they are torn right off. at the sme height. which is incredible. look here.

chally amazing what happened here. per 4 was following this damage. for a couple miles . this was one of the areas where i saw two lines of trees down. we could have had two funnels. two separate tornados. just incredible. as i mention not many injuries with this today. that's the scenario played out over thecountry. we have had 500 tornado reports over the past two weeks. and so fe wve not seen many in the way of fatality and injury. area wide. untry wide. that's really good news. really showing and giving the word out soon enough to protect people. towards hower activity southern maryland. and towardsre fricks burg.
