we continue to track developments out of virginia beach where a gunman killed 12 people and injured 5 more. it happenederyesterday afton just after 4:00 at the virginia beach municipal center. authorities say a longtime city employee named dwayne krcradock opened fire indiscriminately. officials say a long gun battle ben the suspect and officers before that suspect was killed. at this time no known motive. a live lookfrom virginia beach where we are awaiting a news conference to startn just withi the next couple of minutes and will briv yng you the latest an live report is coming up from virginia beach in a few mutes. right now, all o lanes route 50 in anne arundel county are back open after being shut down during a police-involved s oting. last night around 10:00 responded to a report of a

investigators say he recently bought several iguns, mak the purchases legally. police say the weapon he used friday was one of the most common in the u.s. a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun maning it fired one shot each time the trigger was pulled. cradock also had several high-capacity magazine c onps that hold the rounds allowing him to fire more shots before reloading. those are legal in virginia. the gun was also fitted with a silencer and it's not clear this morning whether cradock legally possessed that, because those have to be registered. he had no apparent criminal record. police serarched his home frida night looking for a motive. they are helping plice process the crime scene inside that city office building, the fbi and police. stay with news 4 and our nbc washington app for continu g coverage of the virginia beach shooting. we're working for you to get

so as we stop her and take a pause i'm going ask my chief of police to come forth and talk about that 13th person. chief? >> an update where we are onhe investigative process. first of all, our investigators, ar detectives, forensic technicians worked through the entire night processing our scene and with dignity and of the in removing all victims in this particular case. medical examiner's office will take over theirart of the investigation, and that should take the next 48 hours while they work through it. they are bringing in additional resources from richmond. during the investigative process, we were assisted by the

federal bureau of investigation. they have 40 members of their investigative forensic task force from quantico and other places throughout virginia assist us in this particular case. this is a large-scale crime scene. it's a horrific crime scene please understand it takes not only physical, emotional andps hological toll on everyone who spent the night inside that particular building. atf is also assisting us. we did recover additional weapons at the scene. i'm not at liberty to tell what those weapons are at this time. we alsoi recovered addital weapons at the suspect's home. the suspect, and this will be the only time we will announce his name, is dewayne cradock, who was an engineer with public utilities. he was employed with that department for approximately 15 years. the suspect's family has alsod.
