traditionally a police-involved shooti shooting. this was a long-term, large gunfight. >> reporter: as more families add to a makeshift memorial outside the crime scene, a sign of the efforts to heal. craig boswell, nbc news, virginia beach. >> and we learned today thate of the 12 victims was a former stafford county employee, christopher rap worked for two years as the county's director f public rks. he was an engineer for virginia beach. stafford countofficials released a statement saying in part that he, quote, was the kind of man that treateder evne with dignity and respect, end quote. a memorial service for rapp will take place next wednesday in stafford athe government center. stay with news 4 and our nbc washington app for continuing coverageea on the virginia bch student. in about ten minutes we're going to bring you a live report from the scene. we spich gears now to the run for the whi house. maryland governor larry hogan making it official today, he will not take on president trump for the gopmi notion in 2020. hogan saying instead he will focus on his second term as governor.

the washington post first reported histention not to run. hogan released a statement today thanking everybody who did want him to run. it reads in part quote, i truly appreciate all of the encouragement i received from aeople around the nation urging me to consider mng a run for president in 2020. however, i will not be a candidate. end quote. hogan told the associated press earlier this year that while he has sious concerns about mr. trump's leadership, he has no interest ina, quote, kamikaze mission. prince george's county police officers making a disturbing dcovery on patrol today. they spotted an idling car, and when they looked inside they found two men sho this is the crime scene on rochelle avenue in district heights. police pronounced one man dead on the scene, a they rush the other victim to the hospital. police have not released information on a suspect or a motive in this. a major update to the

we have new information about a police-involved shooting in anne arundel county. chopper 4 capturing the scene last night on route 50 near davidsonvilleroadmen. anne arundel police confronted a man with a knife. the man threatened officers and one officer was forced it fie. todaywe are learning that the suspect is a volunteer firefighter in prince george's county. the county fire departmentnf ming that bit of information. the suspect is in the hospital under police guard. police say he'll charged with assault and rkless endangerewent. nnformation tonight on a tragedy in paradise. this story is by far the most read in our nbc washington app, a prince george's county couple was found dead while vacationing in the dominican republic. the bodies of cynthia day and her fiancee nathaniel holmes were found thursday in their hotel room at a resort in the south southeast coast of the

island.e we talked to victims' loved ones who are demanding answers. back in april, the state department raised the threat level in the dr and urged increased caution because of high crime rates. indian headis highway a known trouble spot in maryland, and now police are trying to do something about that dangerous stretch of highway. threeoving speed cameras are being switched on today, and they're going to move around alongf a 13-mile stretch o route 210 in prince george's county. the cameras are going to operate 24 hours a day seven days a week. indian head highway is one of the most dangerous in our re ion. 60 people were killed in crashes over the past decade. we continue to follow our top story. this is not a bed.

virginia beach with a theme that sadly americans are becoming all too accustomed too. craig. >> reporter: we've sey this manmes before. look, virginia beach is now adding to this. they are a city coming together. they are focusing on the victims. people here also expressing themselves through a growing vigil right outside the crime scene here. we'll focus in on this, show you a little of this, 's been building since early this morning, the flags and the flowers and the not and the cards. for some people here it sunk in. for some people it has not. this is right outside this vigil here of building number two. this is the building with public works. this is the building with public utilities. 400 city employees inside this building at any given time. this is also the building whe the gunman shot someone outside, then went inside and unleashed thsolute chaos. and one of things they're also focusing in on here today, too, is the response from the

police, the four experienced officers that responded so quickly, engaged this gunman in a lengthy gun battle, and they emphasized lengthy, and neutr neutralized, shot this gunman before he could take out any more. at the end of it, still 12 dead 13-plu you count the shooter here. that is something that has sunk in for some, for some it has not. police also talke about today a recent active shooter drill that they did back in late march less than two months ago, how that prepared them but also for how the real thing is nothing to be compared to. erica. >> rerter: >> and craig we know hospital officials gave an update earlier on the other victims who were wounded. what's the ?update there how are they doing? >> reporter: right, we have four still hopspitalized. we have three men, two in critical condition, one fair. we also have one female also in critical condition, erica. >> nbc's craig boswell live in virginia beach for us.

thank you so very much. a double tragedy for a faly in district heights who are still mourning the loss of a relative when a fire tore he through t home this morning. relatives spent the day sifting through what's left of the home on 75th avenue. we're goi s to show youome pictures from that in jusnta mome. hang with me here, but in d.c. and across the area -- i'm a l ttle confused here, hang with me. alght, we're going to talk to you about the story in district heights. a double tragedy as we mentioned for this family, relatives spent the day sifting through what is left of a home on 75th avenue and lanham, the mother and her two children were asleep when a fire started. they were able to run out of the home unhurt. a relative spoke to our news 4's derrick ward about losing her father just months before losing her home. >> it was all sudden, you know, really didn't know what to do.

yeah, and this happening is like -- i don't even know what to say. >> the family has lived there for eight years and tmoy've lost st of their belongings, and now they've got to find somewhere else to live. fire investigators are still working to learn how that fire started. more than 30 people including ten children lost their apartment this morning. this fire gutted much of the three-story camel back village apartments and fire investigators say overheated electronics and stereo caught fire. that fire caused more than a million dollars in damages. the red cross is caring for the victims along with some pets and a firefighter and another person who didn't live there suffered some minor injuries. folks in the district spent part of the day learning about what our brave men and women in be do every dayto keep us safe. the national law enforcement museum hosting this free family fun day. them museu full of artifacts
