with a case that place say ppears to be a murder/suicide here in upper northwest d.c. goodfternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> ani'm wendy rieger filling in for leon checked on a person in the home and found a wndan dead a ife. this all t uhanfolding along wn dawindem place. >> reporter: the police activity is just wrapping up. this block has been roped off all day long. this started about 9:30 this morning. police got a call to check on the welfare of someone in a house in the middle of the block. when they got here, th had to force their way into the house. once police got in the house, they saw the husband inside the household be a gun. chief newsham tellsli us poce did try to communicate with that man briefly, but almost

instantly the man took his own life. at that point police started to search the home. that's whenehey found the wif in the house. she was dead of an apparent gunshot wound. here's what chief of police peer newsham had to say. >> preliminary investigation has shown this appearso a domestic murder/suicide. both of the victims are adults. and so that's where our investigation is leading us rightow. >> we can tell you this neighborhood has been on edge. community and it just about everyone in the neighborhood knew this husband and wife who lived in this home. they did have two young children who were at school when this happened at a local elementary school. at's the very latest here in upper northwest. back to you guys in the studio. >> for those two children and this horrible tragedy for these young kids, would we know where ey're going to go or what will happen with them now? >> reporter: we talked to hief

newsham about that and he said that the police department was making arrangements to get the kids at school, make sure that they're notified. neighbors tell us that a family member is actually flying in to town right now to take care of those children. so they were notified at school and they do have family around them right now. >> what an awful, awful tragedy. thank you,mark. families andin frederick, maryland have lost everything as a fire ripped through a town home. fireters worked to try to get a handle on the fire. driveilding on carrollton is a total loss. darcy spen ler isve at the scene talking to residents who were trying to figure out what their next steps are. hi, darcy. >> reporter: hey there, pat. it took firefighters several hours just to get this blaze under control. i want to show you what it looks like now.

afternoon. eddie martin is the mayor of district heights. ee's seen here in the center of the scr prosecutors say martin authorized a $50,000 fireworks puhase on city letterhead in 2017. state prosecutors say martin used his position to help a friend buy the a fireworks evade safety regulations. the fireworks were onld allowe to be used by municipalities with special permits. a fourth suspect is now in custody in connection with the murder of a prince george's county teenager. 18-year-old edwin rios is in custody in theistrict and awaiting extradition. rios and three other teenagers with ties to the ms 13 gang are charged with brutally killing ariana diaz. her body was found in a creek near 64th avenue in riverdale. police say the teens apparently killed her to keep her quiet about a robbery in which they all took part. police arevestigating a

deadly crash today in prince george's county. it happened on old central avenue. a county police officer tried to pull the car over. police say the car was speeding when it hit a bush acurb and th crashed into a tree. the driver was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at lhe hospital. tracee wilkins wilave a live update on this on news 4 at 5:00. a man isn uder arrest for allegedly trying to set off a bomb in times square. nbc news has learned he also spoke of attackiit polians here in the district. the man is a bangladesh citizen and a permanent u.s. resident with a green card. law enforcement sources say he'd been under surveillance for a while. they arrested him early this morning after he tried to buy guns with the serial members removed. officials in new york say there is no eminent threat to times square. west point has identified
