students and 19,000 employees. bureau chief tracee wilkins explains why leaders decided to stick with the local favorite even after a nationwide search. >> i am so proud to announce, without reservation, my appointment of dr. monica goldson as the permanent chief executive officer of -- >> reporter: there were plenty of standing ovations after dr. monica goldson was named the new c.e.o. of the prince george's county public school system. goldson has been serving as interim c.e.o. for the past 11 months. she was appoint today that positionfter former c.e.o. kevin maximwell decided to step down after years of controversy. under maxwell's leadershipment school wasid dived, lost money and was entangled in a scandal that led to overght of the system. >> it is a neway. from july 23rd, i will continue to do that. >> reporter: the county school sysm is in need of stability. it's had some eight leaders in

the last 20 years. goldson was among 20 national candidates. the selection process lasted a month and a half. some question how quickly it moved. >> it was only one public hearing. there was a little bit more time and a little bit more access to the public atarge to give their feedback, but i am happy with dr.ingoldson be our c.e.o. >> reporter: as a native of the county, a graduate of its public schools, goldson said she is aware of the precedent she is setting. >> to be able to serve a district that was a student in and to get to this point is amazing. i never thought in my wildest dreams that today was possible. and so i worked these 11 months, not fused on this te right now, but just trying to get it right for kids. >> reporter: now the prince orge's county board of education has to approve this nomination. theounty executive is saying she is hoping to have all of this tied up in the next few weeks. in largo,'m tracee wilkins, news 4. bracing of people are

alone in the morning, terrible. just terrieve. erybody trying to stampede over each other to get to work on time. >> reporter: for now, agh nrhood being reimagined and redesigned. day by day. in crystalcity, adam tuss, nes 4. >> a man who rescued a young mom from a potentially deay dog attack is showing his dramatic story. the attack took place in the stone wall estates subdivision some spotsylvania county. northern virginia bureau chief julie carrie learned this is not the first time these dogs were involved in an attack. >> rep wter: danny just driving home from work last wednesday when he heard screams and saw a frightening scene. >> i see the lady on the be ground with the dog mauling her. my first instinked was to put the car in park and run. >> reporter: the woman who had newborn her house was being tacked in the front yard. one of the family's six dogs biting her leg. this is what the breed looks like on the akc's website.

>> it looked like she had been attack by sharks. the bites were so brutal and so bad. >> reporter: other neighbors and men from the landscaping truckhe went after tog with tools, but it didn't let go until canter jumped on the animal. >> i yelled the words, out just like i would do with my dogs. when i did, he let go and immediately he turned to me. that's when i grabbed his collar and slung him to the ground to hisack and held him down. >> reporter: the victim was able to flee into the house. before canter was through he had to help an arriving deputy. he was also bitten before both dogs were shot and later died. anneighbors say it's not the first time there's been trouble with the dog. you can see where they fortified the fences. >> we've lived in fear from these dogs in o backyard for a while now. >> reporter: next door neighbor russell garcia said the dogs had gone under or over the fence three times to attack his dog. they show the injuries from ci gar's hand when he was

breaking up an attack in january. >> animal control should have taken action, either removing the dogs or making sure they're muzled or something along those lines. >> reporter: for danny, it's tough remembering the chilling screams, but it helped when the victim recently sent him a message thanking him and the others for saving her, being her hero. she called you a hero. do you accept that honor? >> it's good to be called a hero, but i don't feel like i'm a hero. i just feel like i did the right thing, what i was supposed to be doing, save somebody's life. >> reporter: in spotsylvania county, i'm julie kerry, news 4. preparing for an emergency on the water as summer vacation season kicks intofull gear. plus the new treatment bringing much needed relief to people with a common breathing problem
