8:39 am
>> i need absolute loyalty. >> russell, sienna, seth, and naomi, good morning. first, two of you are totally unrecognizable in this role. you, russell. seth, i cognized. and naomi, too, but sienna, you play elizabeth ailes. you play roger ailes. a total transformation. what did it do as an actor? >> it' a lot of fun because you put all that stuff on. the difficulty of being in the chair for a couple hours is not really my thing, but once you have tha stuff on, freeing. you know, you know the makeup is doing a lot of work for you, so you can just relax. >> but you turn inthese ib incred performances. what did you think the first time you saw yourself as elizabeth ailes? >> it's so convincing. it's strange to look in the mirror and not recognize any part of you. >> i said like who is playing? wh i really didn't know who it was. >> it was fun.
8:40 am
i found it really liberating once you were in,seike rusll said. >> ailes was this larger than life character. i would say this is a pretty damning portrayal. what did you learn about him, what did you come to know or think or believe about him having done this research and gotten into this character? >> you know roger through the frame of fox news. if y know more than that, you probably know he was an adviser to three presidents. aat was surprisingnd fun for me was to find out that when he was in high school and when he was in college, he was ebseed with broadway twmusicals. n the nixon campaign, which he worked on, and before he worked onre an's campaign, he was a broadway producer. his one minor success was baltimore. so that feeds a lot of things he was doing with t fox and way he was changing graphics and grabbing people's attention. he had a very ictheatr perspective. that was interesting to learn. >> naomi, you played gretchen
8:41 am
carlson, an anchor and correspondent for fox news and ultimately led to his downfall in the wake of sexual harassment allegations. what attracted you to this role? >> i mean, a woman, to be able to take down a man at that level of power, that's pretty impressive. took a lot of courage, and like russell, i saw a loton availabl the internet, her books to read, plenty available. but there was a certain thing that gave me a whole lot of insight, that's when she was playing the violin with such veracity and discipline and focus in a way that told you the story that she had probably made certain sacrifices in her life to be so successful at that. and she was very good at her job. she was at the peak of her career. and to be undervalued and pushed aside because of the way the fox, you know, system works, women were told to stay in their

place, to fall in liot. and n push back. and she wouldn't settle for that. >> did any of you talk -- not you, roger ailes passed on, but did any of you talk to the real pele you were portraying or did you want to? you portray brian lewis. oh, maybe it's off the record. >> the biggest source of research for me was gabe book.an's which was a pretty impressive tombur and i made s to read it front to back before i even started. it was an education, forsure. >> you played brian lewis who was kind of ailes' right-hand y for a key period of time. tell me about this role, because of course, we're used to seeing you in comedy oru, hearing yo point. the >> the opportunity to do something without a british accent was amazin too good to pass up. it was fascinating. i mean, you know, there's

obviously the wedness, the fact that i have worked for fox for a number of years. different branch, obviously. but it's an amazing story. and it's a very revant story for obvious reasons. and it's different than anything i have done in the past, so it felt like -- >> speaking of, naomi, you talk about accents. you obviously had to learn an american accent, but i was learning because you also had to learn the newscaster accent. they have a way of speaking. >> speak nice. yeah, we all did. and it's not easy. i don't know if they make it look easy i find it, you know, it's hard. you have to put a lot of hours in to sound authentically american. >> yes, and i know it's a reunion for you and russell. russell, i read when you wereti out as an actor in l.a., you would come crash on naomi's couch. >> very kind about that. every now and then, i would be going through wn, and it was a convenient thing to call up

naomi and go, come and hang f c aouple days? >> was he a good guest? >> yes, always came with a bottle of wine. >> or a case. good did he give you any? >> he did. >> well, thank you so much for being here. russell, sienna, seth, and naomi, thank you. the movie series is called "the youdest voice." it starts sunda night on showtime. >> just ahead, we're going to talk fashion. summer staples tha a flatter and all figures. first, this is "today" on nbc.
