"early today" starts rightow n >> good thursday morning >> the nation has now got on the hear from ten of the democratic candidates some well-known faces and many l sser known presidentia hopefuls took the debate stage and made themselves heard. >> do you have a plan to deal with mitch mcconnell >> i do. short of a democratic majority in the senate, you better understand the fight still goes on [ speaking foreign language
3:32 am
>> that image of oscar and his daughter is heartbreaking. it should also piss us off>> i'e who has passed a law protecting a woman's right of reproductive health in health iurance >> i just want to say there's three women up here that's right to choose.rd for a woman's that's what we call at home all foam and no beer >> all right for more on the big night, we're joined by tracy. the candidates agreed on a lot of things, but one issue that seemed to divide them there was health care. >> reporter: yeah, they d not all agree on health care, and the big issue for the democratsn has be this idea from bernie sanders and also elizabeth warren, medicare for all, government-run health care the candidates were asked would they abandon their own private plans fo fr medicare all and here's what they said.
3:33 am
>> many people watching at home have health insurance coverage through their employer who here would abolish their private health insurance in favor of a government-run plan just a show of hands to start out with >> reporter: so interesting, you can see there were a variety of responses there from the some think that washington should go all in and make sure that everyone s health care. others said that if you already have private insurance, let's haick with tt and only change what needs to be changed there were other areas where they sparred, domestically and internationally onn. ira another hand raised where candidates were asked would you go back with the iran nuclear deal that president trump has abandoned. everyos said yecept for cory booker. cory booker said he would like to take the opportunity to get a better deal.
3:34 am
in the midst of all this turmoil that's going on right now with iran afghanistan was another area s where weaw a couple of t candidates clash time -- tim lyon and tulsi gabbert whether or not we should stay in fight in afghanistan the was sort of an overall theme about america not working for working families, and there was a lot ofab talk t whether big corporationg are get away with too much, whether it was the economy or health care and health insurance now, president trump apparently was watching he tweeted one word -- boring. back to you. >> on his way to the g20 on air force one. thank you, tracy let's brg in a former adviser to hillary clinton who helped secretary clinton prepare
3:35 am
fodebates in 2016. so somebody familiar in this room we all know the goal for all ths candidates w to stand out, break apart,fo especially r the lesser known candidates. who accomplished that the most >> well, to start, not to be corny, but i would say the goal of the debate is to help educate the democratic party andll ry the american voter on who these folks are, what they stand for, what they want to do and at very mu happened, and nbc, msnbc and telemunldo deserve a great deal of credit this is not easy to put together, and the moderators kept it going. i think the very first moment of the debate might have been the that, that group photo just encapsulated where we are at the moment we have never seen more than one woman on a debate stage. there were five people of color on that stage. this just shows how wide and broad the democratic party is.
3:36 am
and i think if i were donald trump and i was watching tonight, i would blee a litt worried, because there were a couple of presidents on that stage, and will be a couple more i think in terms of winners and losers, it's hard to declare people that. bui'll take a shot elizabeth warren was declared a winner becau she tonight what she did everyoi day just gng out there and she has a plan forg. everythin she clearly had a debate plan and it worked. i think joe biden won, eve though he wasn't there, because no one said a peep about him no one attacked him. on the losing side, i don't think beto o'rourke had a marly good night he just didn't seem very high energy he was the focus of attack on a few people and i think donald trump was a ser, because he should be looking at this field as a danger and then looking ahead to tomorrow night, i would say, you know, bernie sanders needed elizabeth warren to take a little more heat than she did tonight, because joe biden and elizabeth warren are basically taking his voters.
3:37 am
he needs them back, and i think he's going to be a little feisty, both biden and maybe warren in absten cha >> trump did escape largy unscathed. t senator klobuchar did have this to say. >> i would make sure if there's any possibility of a conflict an twe're havinghis debate in congress right now, that he comes to congress for an authorizrcion of military foe. i would do that. and this president is literally, every single day, ten minutes away from going to war, one tweet away from going to war and i don't think we should conduct foreign policy -- >> your time is up >> we ow the president thought that whole thing was boring. but i wanted to get your reaction to that jab there >> it was interesting on the whole. he came up a lot less than i would have thought in part because one of the reasonthat joe biden is
3:38 am
leading close to 40% of the field is that he has shown that people belie he has the attributes to go toe to toe with trump. i would have thought that more people would have done what amy klobuchar ditonight, which is to shohei, i can also go toe to toe. shot not by name calling, but making an important about going to war and getting congress' approval so it was interesting watching the ten of them on the question of impeachment, and what they would do as esident if donald trump were a private citizen they were kind of all over the board. it was interesting to see that there was no single, coherent approach and i don't know what's right and what's wrong it will be interesting to see tomorrow night what happens, because joe biden has been making his bread and butter on going at trump >> and that will be the case so is that mostly what you'll be looking for tonight, and given
3:39 am
tonight, do these candidates on night two have more of an advantage because they were able to watch and dissect what happened last night? >> they do when i looked at the first of the 20 people laid out think anyone got an assignment that was bad for them. elizabeth warren got a great one, and she was the leadoff, she was first night, she doesn't worry too much about being attacked or atpocking, which is a tive experience. the people going tomorrow night advantage. have the there are a lot of campaign prep teams who are as surprised as some of us abouthat happened and trying to figure out what to do but the best teams and the bes candidatese a plan they stick with it they have 24 hours to fine tune of it. but we mht see more of the same i do think bernie is probably going to be a little frisky. >> i can imagine so. thank you for your perspectives.

tune in for rounghtwo tot as the ten candidates take the stage right here on nbc. immigration was front and center oten the deba stage last night with candidates making veral references to a haunting image that had become a heart enching symbol othe crisis at the border. nbc's gabe gutierrez is there.to we want warn you, some of these images are disturbing. >> reporter: oscar martinez ramirez was trying to swim across the r grand in texas with his 23-month-old daughter now their final momenthave captured the world's attention and left his mother in el salvador in agony. this is home video of her. this is their family the new faces of the border crisis mother tonya watched in horror as the water swept her husband and daughter away. the photographer who took the disturbing image says the family
