>> and, of course,ur very own weather arrior. this guy right here, we'll show you how heid on the usinfa "american ninja warrior" obstacle course. >>we're going to begin with that breaking news in northern virginia. a shooting in the parking garage of a popular mall. good afternoon, everyone. i'm leon harris. i'm pat lawson muse. shots were fired right around noon and the person taken to the hospital with serious injury. >> let's get right to ws 4's mark segraves right outside the mall. what are you hearing here? >> well, leon andt, here's what we know so far. this all happened about 1:40 this afternoon. witnessesell us they heard as many as four shots coming from inside t parking garage here at pentagon city. this all happened tside of the entrance to macy's, closest to the macy's entrance. police are investigating two levels, the fourth level and the third level.el we can you thatat we saw a

handgun on the ground outside the macy's door on the third leveling and most of the investigation appears focused on the fourth level. here's what police had to tell us just a short time ago. >> upon arrival it was determined that a struggle ensued between two subjects in the garage in whichrm a firea was brandished. the struggle continued and one subject was shot. s thatbject has been transported to an area hospital withni life-threate injuries. >> police tell us there is no threat to the community. they have spoken to both people involved inhat struggle. ey could not tell us what led to that fight or who opened the gun, who was legally owned or how many guns were involved, but, again, we do know that we saw one handgun that was recovered here. one person taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries taying on her person the scene and being interviewed by police. again, so far nobody has been

charged, and, again, no threats to the community in this area. that's the very latest. pat, back to you. >> that's pretty disturbing. a lot of us shop at that mall and have been to that store and thatntrance. thank you, >>mark. stay with us throughout the afternoon as we work to learn more about the victim and the hi shooter in ts case. we'll also have updates in the nbc washington app. now to more breaking news. a man has pleaded guilty in a dui crash that killed three childra. >> the mans more than three decades in children. three young siblings wereilled and their parents injured in this crash on indian head highway. traceyns wilki is live with reaction. tracey? >> reporter: with this plea we a lot opportunity to hear about what the state was going to present in this case. they had a lot of evidence, some coming from theefendant himself who they heard saying i've messed up. i've messed up.e they say was unable to walk, that at one point they set him

on the guardrail and he was so t intoxicate ad he fell off of the guardrail before he was placed in the cruiser. at the end of the day 27-year-old thomas hawks decided togo ahead and accept responsibility, and he did plead guilty in court 5-year-old twins alexander and rasalie and the 1-year-old sibling waki lled when hawks slammed into the backf o their video stopped at a right light on indian heady. highwa parents juanita and alexis mejia were injured in hawks met guilty to three counts of ve cularmanslaughter and two counts of causing serious injury. we heard from the parents of the children who were killed in this crash just a moment ago. >> is bittersweet moment. we're so happy thathi tis almost over, a little bit -- a little bit of tranquility is

what we need, and even though this is not going to heal us, but i know that my beautiful a children loing down and are saying good job to mommy and daddy for fighting and for coinuing fighting. >> reporter: now this saved them from some of the more difficult parts of this fight. it saved them from having tgo rough a lengthy trial here by him pleading guilty. the family won't have to deal with that. it will be the judge who will decide how much time thomas is going to get, and at this point he's looking at possibility of up to 36 years and a $45,000 fine. reporting live in upper marlboro, tracey wilkins. back to you in the studio. >> do we know whenhe may be given that sentence? >> reporter: september. he's out on bond now. >> okay. gacey wilkins reportin live. your heart just breaks and goes out to that family. here's hoping that they can find oome peace now that the chapter is beginning t close.

pat, over to you. a new terrible reminder this afternoon about the danger of fireworks. wend wendy reigher is here with more. >> reporter: in washington on sunday a 9-year-old child lt a thumb and two fingers. firefighters say two boys were ldin an m-80 type of fishing with a short fuse, and it went off before they could get it out of their hands. this incident has prompted d.c. officials to remi us all about the dangers of fireworks, even sparklers, most of which are legal in the district, but theyl can sti cause an injury. >> each year we give young children sparklers in their hand and don't realize how hot a sparkler can burn, and sparklers do cause burn injuries in children. >> but, again, this was one of those 80s. d.c. officials want you to buy

fireworks from licensed vendors only, and ingt washin if you use or sell illegal fireworks, it can cost you $2,000 and you can even be arrested and what's worse is you can blow off a limb or worse than that. >> back to you. >> they aret toys. >> they are not. >> thanks, wendy. the fourth of july is always a security challenge for local law enforcement, and thisyear it's an even bigger task because of president trump's speech at the lincoln memorial. well today we're learning about a new fbi bulletin that went oua warningout potential terror there is and rotests. news 4's corey smith just finished talking with park police about this. cory what, did they tell you t about wha they are doing to get ready for all of this? >> reporr: well, leon, unlike previous fourth of july celebrations, this year the park police have had to work close th outside agencies including the secret service to prepare for this independence day. now, we'll have more on that in just a moment, but i want to show our viewers where things

stand with the setup because we are just three days away. take a look at the video. we caused a mavis amount of fireworks that's going to take to pull off the displays on thursday td arriving to location. we spotted these crews unloaded truckloads of mortars and shelves in west potomac park. that's going to be where the second fireworks display will take place after the display over the lincoln memorial. that, of course, is where president trump will be delivering his independence day speech. as you can see, thetage is all set, and much of the security around the perimeter has been up for several days now. now you mentiatned fbi bulletin that went out last week. that's standard operating pcedure for any event of this magnitude, and as of right now park police tell me there is no imminent threat, be it from a foreign entity, seone influenced by a foreign entity or someone sadly here domestically. park police say they are also planning for a number of protest groups to show up. obvi sly thepresident's presence adding a new dynamic to this year's celebration, but police are confident that they will be ready.

guilty by insanity >> there's no justice. insane or not, there's no justice. >> bhasin will be committed to central state hospital where he'll get regular mental evaluations. >> former redskins mvp quarterback mark rypien has been arrested on domestic violence charges. rypien wasrsted for hitting his wife in the stomach last night. during a court appearance this morning rypien said the two were having an argument, and he'sno pleade guilty. the former redskins qb was arrested for domestic violence back in 2017. an alarming new revelation today about the conditions at a migrant facility in el paso, texas. the offin of iector general detailed that the situation there is bad. nsrder agents were arming themselves agai possible riots. the report obtained by nbc news found that in may there were only four showers for 800

've seen temperatures in the 90s. six days in a row, told you it would be a prettyea long ht wave, and the hottest day was saturday with 96. right now downo 87. that's the high temperature so far today with winds out of the north at 6 miles per hour. cloud cover and a little bit in the way of haze. as a matter of fact, a very nice afternoon. 6 in leesburg and 85 culpepper and 86 towards huntingtown. vhe average high is 87 so we're right around aage for today. we've been above average for so long. take a look at the radar. nothing to show you in our area. or the next dayr so. this is tomorrow. again, here's tomorrow morning. future weather, timing it out for us through 00. no problem through 1:00. tomorrow, another great day to get weather outdoors. we're going to start the heat up quickly and with that we'll see a couple of showers and thunderstorms developing. most likely in our western zones in frederick and leesburg and

winchester around 4:00, 5:00 and around 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 tomorrow evening and notice these are few and far between. this is not a lot of rain. only a 20% chance of those storms happening tomorrow. tomorrow wednesday and thursday a little bit of a differentry sto we're tracking a few systems and back off to the west where they are trying to make it our way. a big ridge of high pressure which means warm air is starting to build in the middle part of the country. 90 degrees inky kentucnd 86 in chicago and 92 in nashville and that warmer air is going to ove back in our area. we had one day of heat relief. yesterday we had 92. tomorrow i'm going right back into the 90s. 94 degrees is where i'm going. the heat returns and not too humhough. the humidity really starts to creep up during the day on wednesday. isolated thunderstorm and most of us on the drier side. a 40%. chance look at thursday. 60% chance of afternoon storms and a high of 92 degrees. this is really interesting to see how much rain we see and if

it together, we all get so excited to produce this. >> porter: with less than a week to go, the team is fired up to make history. at west potomac park, aimee cho, news>> 4. well, it is the first day of july which means a slew of new laws went into effect across th. are >> it limb pact a lot of things, including how you eat and drink, and get ready to use paper straws in d.c because of these new laws. plastic straws in bars and restaurants off limits unless those places want to pay a big fine. businesses could be charged up to $200 if they are still hapgd out plastic straws to customers. however, there will still be a small amount of straws available. >> if you live in maryland, restaurants will start doing away with the styrofoam cups and to go boxes that. law took effect and restrants have a full year to entirely stop using them. the state now has to reach out to businesses to inform them out the new ban. maryland is the first state to

the ntsb is on the scene in texas trying to figure out what caused a plane to crash into a hangar yesterday morning. all ten people on board died. >>aynbc's j gray wports,th the pilots dead and the plane destroyed, investigators will have to look for other clues toa figure out wwent wrong. >> reporter: images from the scene detailed the horror of the crash. >> everybody just stand by. we had an accident on the field, so expect not to go out any time soon.: >> reportertnesses say the
