spirit of giving. >> for carlos, the call to protect and serve was in his bloo >> my mom w in the marine corps. my aunt was in the marine corps. what made me really want to go in there, to be honest with you, was the uniform. the dress blue uniform. >> he joined the marines at 19 just before 9/11, and was sent tofraq for his first tour o duty. when he came back, he felt different. >> i started feeling ashamed and guilty and depressed. and i didn't know why. >> despite his personal struggles, carlos found the love of his life, sharon. >> we met when i was in college. he had to chase me for a little while, but he wore me down. >> they got married after his second deployment. that's when sharon sai the scars of her husband's bad battle with mental health were eaer to see. >> he was quicker with anger, dn't like to be in crowds.

and welcome back, everyone. nothing puts a damper on a summer night more than swarms of mosquitoes leaving itchy, uncomfortable bug bites. medical contribute dr. natalie azar has tips to keep your next outdoory activitug free. let's start off, how can you try to keep the bugs away in your own home and surrounding areas? >> a couple things you can do at home. have a fan outside with you. two reasonswhy. number one, the fan will disperse odors that mosquitoes are attracted to, and they're also notoriously bad fliers. if you have a fan next to you,

that can help keep them awr. hing to do is wear light colored clothing. mosquitoes are drawn to dark colors. if you see something on you liko a tickr something, it's obviously easier to see. >> i get a lot of bug bites standing outside the white house. i'm just going to prop up a fan. >>nd a reminder, make sure your screens don't have holes in them. it can go a long way. >> repellent. >> we have three product the cdc recommds. deet is the active ingredient in off. that's the toughest stuff. you want to look for 20% to 30% deet. if you are looking for something more natural, one is called oil of lemon eucalyptus which is refined from the eucalyptus tree. that can be used on anybody but not on children under the age of three. >> strong enough? >> very strong. the other one is something that is a synthetic version of something found in the black pepper pl at. this cano be used.

i want to point out that it can be used in pregnant women, in breast feeding women. not to be used in infants under the age of two months. >>thow important to check wi your doctor if you are pregnant? >> i always think it's a good idea. when we had zika a couple years ago, they were very much on board with protecting women from mouito borne illnesses. >> what we have here is an example of clothes that are trted with an insecticide. >> in the actual shirt? >> in the actual clothing. you want to read the label carefully to know how many times you can wash it andt retains its insecticide ability. >> and citronella. >> elunfortun for citronella, if you're relying on this just for mosquito repellent, it's probably not as effective. don't rely on it solely. >> does it wear off? >> usually after 40 minutes, it

ouarts to wear off. you have h of protection with those. >> what about a bug bite? >> if it's painful, you can use an anti-inflammatory or a pain reliever. for itch, i recommend an antihistamine or an ice pack. andne of my favorite things i didn't realize was around for 30 years, sorry, everybody, is after bite, which is baking soda, and a big hit in my houses now. rub it on. >> rub it on and it helps with the itch. aloe and honey, and finally -- >> my biggest fear. ticks. >> ticks. if youo have a tick engorged in your skin. for 36 hours, you want to clean the area with alcohol, you want to take ne-tipped tweezers. you want to go as close to the skin as possible, pull up with a steady motion, not a motion. and i would recommend for anyone had a tick bite, oth your hlth care provider about next steps and what symptoms to look for in the coming weeks. >> great tips, dr. natalie azar.

>> i'm so happy to be here. who would have thought in 1993 when i enlisted i woulde here at 30 rock hanging out with the air force band, you, cooking. i'm happy. look at me.an >> c we do this? i want to see her shoes. >> i have some themed shoes. >> we're ready. >> what are we cooking? >> i thought i would up great your red,e, whit and blue today. everyone already has their menus so i'm going to tell you how to punch it up. for the re if you're making steak or beef, usually people do a salt and pepper thing. i like to do it diffeently. we hav salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, and curry powder. utso think abo curry powder, it's got so much going on. ginger, coriander, cumin. >> it kind of does it for you. it does. what we're going to do is stir it up. the big ticket to making sure your steak i nice and juicy is how you rub. so about a tablespoon at a time. you get it into the flash, and really rub it in.

really rub it in. you can do this now with whatever steak you have in the fridge. wrap it tightly with some plastic wrap, let it hang out in >> for how long? >> up to 12 hours. do it now, but up to 12 hours. ave it room temperature for about two hours before you grill it or get it to your pan. that's another trip. you don't always have to use the grill. you can put the pan on the grill. >> will it still have the same ? tast >> yes, even better, you get a full on 360 flat iron of fire on that, so you're not just getting th grill marks and then the releasing. make sure you also grill all the sides. that means the top, the dbottom he edges right there. >> is it phenomenal? >> curry powder on your steak. >> that rub on thet fatty par of the steak is amazing. >> we only have a minute left. >> really quick, on the white. on the potatoes, if you go to the produce station, you can get potatoes in a bag you zap for
