it seemed as if this humid cloudy air was holding down the smoo the fireworks were difficult to see. the logistics for best viewing were a bit different this year lfcause of chang to the firework show itse. those sitting to the east of the washington monument saw a few minutes ofk, dazzling firewor but as the program continued, the fireworks became obscured by what seemed to be undissipated smoke by the explosions. it caused the audience see them as a giant colored glare. >> it was just too much smoke. > the first few minutes was good. then after that it was like a cloud. you couldn't see anything. you could see people going home right now. >> reporter: others made the best ofhis independence day celebration. >> it's phenomenal. you see aot of people. you meet a lot of people. the environment is nice. the fireworks ares beautiful. it's a nice place to be. >> reporter: and we are tol

barely see the fireworks. here's the why behind it. chk it out, on a normal night you're heading down to the national mall, seeing the fireworks go off there without a hitch right now. as we head to graphics and check out the whyehind the science, here's that normal night. there's the fireworks. aren't they beautiful? here's why they're typically not an issue. you have warm air at the surface and colder up into the atmosphere. that air and smoke has a place to go. not the case out there tonight. what happened was that warmer face as just above the s with cooler air trapped below it. so, that smoke had nowhere to go. this is what we called a temperature inversion. why could folks in virginia see the fireworks and not in d.c.? we had a light westerly wind coming across, so we kept seeing the smoke pile uhe in district right where the firerks were happening. in virginia you got a little bit of clearing. right now on storm team 4 radar

police officer. a second arrest was made for obstructing a police investigation. three people including two secret service individuals suffered minor injuries during the chaos. weather likely lame for this sinkhole in wood bridge tonight. thankfully nobody was injured when the sinkhole swallowed this car as you see there. >> reporte folks here in wood bridge are getting doubl the fourth of july souw. y can probably hear the fireworks gng off around me. they've been watching this massive sinkhole form all throughout the day. it runs the length of the prince dale road you can and then on our side of the road, i'll turn the flashlight off, you can very faintly see the light of car flickering down against the walls of one of thekh sines. there's one car that's down inside of that hole and they haven't been able to get it out so far. >> it's crazy. >> is there a creek back there? >> i'm not sure.r: >> reporte the car was sunk down by the time we got there.
