rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to today. thank you for jning us on this morning. i am peter alexander. >> good morning. waking up to the news of yet another big earthquake hting our friends in california overnight. >> exactly right. the state of california on alert this morning and we want to get right to the breaking news from overnight. the second major quake to hit california in two days, a magnitude 7.1. this one containing 11 times more energy than the first. >> this one was centered near ridgecrest, california out in the mojave desert. but the quake could be felt from sacramento to san diego to las vegas. a series of aftershocks happened roughout the night and more are expected. >> california's governor newsom called on the president to call a state of emergency.

fearing structural damage ridgecrest regional hospital evacuated patients. the latest quake was centered 150ea miles northst of los angeles, the largest to hit the region in 20 years. 20 million people in the quake zone felt as far away as las vegas and parts of san diego.a nb summer league game had to be suspended. officials at this las vegas arena worried about safety with the swaying overhead scoreboard. >> the quake was even felt at dodger stadium. >> i tnk we got another earthquake. >> yep. we definitely got another earthquake goingon. >> a soberni war from scientist busy future seismic tivity in the area. >> molly, you were already in

ridgecrest asleep preparing to file a report on the last quake that hit thue. ere effectively on top of the explain that feeling. >> it is like nothing i felt before. terrifying. i was sound asleep. it was 8:20. the whole room started to violently shake. i couldn't quite understand what was happening. the room felt like it was on hin hinges. i was on the first floor and quickly got up. i tried to hold on to aall but you can't stand still because everything is shaking. the crew was on the third floor. the sound guy flew out o bed because of the force of the quake and we ran out of there immediately. the hotel alarms were going off. people were really, really freaked out.ma >> i ine that is true.

stay safe going forward. molly hunter, thank you very much. was the parking lot tha hit pretty hard. >> that is right. nobody out here has slept basically all night. the after shocks have been non-stop. most of the town is in darkness right now and the power is out to a lot of ridgecrest. wergave emecy lights inside of big lots. i want to walk you through what we see here. it is absolute pandemonium in here. imagine being insid of this big lots or a grocery store. there are grocery stores in the satrip mall while the ceiling is coming down on you as you make your way t the door, debris that is blocking throughout. this was the scene in so many

places. around 8:00. there were people out and about when that violent shaking started. we saw it in restaurants. we saw the moments of panic. people pulling out their cell phones and videoing what happened. we saw it in grocery stores, liquor stores, a very, very terrifying few moments there. afterwards when people come utside they find themselves in darkness. now it is a moment firefighters are going around and putting out different hot spotsnd fires that flare up when a gas rupture finds an ignition source. firefighters are waiting for first light to get out and assess the damage. >> so luc there were not more serious injuries reported from this. >> quakes have been a major challenge for first responders in ridgecrest,li rnia. we spoke to the police captain

and asked him in addition to the aftershocks what are the most urgent concerns. >> right now we have kern county fire dartment and doing protectiveweeps of the neighborhood. >> you mentioned that people in your area are bracing for the aftershocks, but a lot of them yn't have power. when do expect that to be restored? >> you know, imminent in the next hour they should have p restoreder to the remaining 800 customers. >> when you do turn it on, that is where you can learn where other problems exist. well, initially we have a lot of gas leaks and there are a lot of open gas lines. we the power comes on if have broken fires, lamps that broke in the house and they werc on, they introduce some flammable materials.

intense blast of wind from a microburst blew the roof off of this home in iowa. in wyoming there were twisters. florida, streaks of lightning painted the sky and rain delayed races at the daytona inte ational speedway. r scorcher from san antonio to raleigh, the combination of heat and humiditm wie it feel like it is in the triple digits. and it is going to be very warm again in alaska. the average high is 65. temperatures will be running 10 to 20 degreesbove average. anchorage 83 and likely will break more records going into the weekend. and also in the southeast we have not the heat but also the humidity. we are looking forward to feel like it is 108 in mobile, 97 in orlando. re the northeast we are looking for the temperatu to be just as warm and it will feel like it is 95 to 100 degrees. cleveland will feel like it is about 90.
