this is nothing compared to a lot of the homes on this street. that water soaked into basements. >> it came all the way up to this top step right there, but did not get to the first floor, thank god. >> reporter: jeremy counts his blessings after flood waters destroyed his mother's basement. >> i think i'm st in shock right now. it hasn't hit me too much because i've just been working, working, working to clean this up. >> it is a train table. my that they are set up with us. >> reporter: he grew up in this potomac home on coat street. this was the sne earlier when the flash flood turned the street into a river. >> there's just a ton of memories in the bament that just -- they all flooded up to the ceiling and they're all gone. >> reporter: and the sheer force of the water was intense. it was at least 6 feet deep. there was a car parked here in this open space. the water pushed the car at least 10 feet down the

news 4's jackie benson continues our team coverage now in mclean. jackie? >> reporter: well, take a look behind me here. you can see kirby road is closed, washed out by the storm. it's part of the extensive dame here in northern virginia. and a lot of people think this sort of thing is going to keep happening unless structural changes armade. >> this is where all the water isg cominfrom. >> reporter: this is what it looked like in the 8500 block of lew insville road in mclean. the area was being pounded by several inches of rain. >> this is not normal. unfortunately the infrastructure we built 20, 30 years ago around these streets and the drainage systems is not keeping up with the weather patterns. >> reporter: the damage at one home includes this dead air conditioner unit and piles of t trash t floated in from who knows where. homeowner waspi tells news 4 that during the time he's lived here, he's noticed thea' ares drainage system both natural and

manmade, has been unable to keep up with the rain. he took this video showing a torrent of water gushing from a big drainage pipe across the street. he says the water hits his side of the road with no place to go except into a smaller drainage ditch that is quickly overwhelmed. >> i've had a friend of mine who was walking wn from this street while it was rainingd an he fell in the ditch neck deep. that's life-threatening. >> reporter: the busy road ng itself is ero at the edge and shows signs of patching. he says his front yard remains so coggtantly so the trees are starting to rod. he's made the decision to invest in major structural changes to his property. this video from a news 4 t viewer shows washout that forced police to close kirby road in mclean. it is not the first time heavy rains have caused pivot run creek to rise up and over its banks, taking part of kirby road with it. and we are told that kirby road will cesed for what's

woodbridge family are devastated. a crash killed three people, including a child and a baby. the car they were riding in crossed the cter linend hit an suv on courthouse road in spotsylvania county near lake anna yesterday. it was one of several crashes that left nine people dead over ohe holiday weekend in our area. a tow truck tok away the mangled car and was nearly unrecognizable as you see her in this scene. anna was killed along with a 12-year-old girl and a 10 month old boy.am a gooditan who rushed to help describes what she heard one of the children say. and repeatedly, over and over and over dagain, an it's one of the most horrific things i've ever seen. >> the driver and another child who wa in the suv at the time are in the hospital tonight with life-threatening injuries. jim? >> a trip of a lifetime has turned into a nightmare for the parents of an indiana toddler. the 1-year-old died in a freak accident on a cruise ship.

north potomac today, 5.55 inches. merrifield, tyson's corner, 5 inches. fredrik was the first area that saw flash flood warning, 6.30 inches of rain. the national airport set a record at 3.44 inches. that is 6th most rain in o day in the month of july, just incredible. and this one and this one would have been number one if it was . , so you know that's a lot of rain across our region. not good when we're setting record for rainfall. no rain now. we're on the dry side. you see the storm is making its wa down to the south, continues to clear us out. right now really nice and clear outside. look what it did for temperatures, though. it kept us on the cool side. only 80 today. the average high is 89. down to the south, though, raleigh, nashville, into the lo to mid 90s in the south and that warmer air is going t start to make its way our way starting tomorrow. but really into the day wednesday, thursday and friday. outside right now a very
