up i jim crow era florida. hene makes o mistake, a mistake that's ot hisfault. all of a sudden, hefinds himsel at nickel academy, which is on the outside, a not bad looking place, but on the inside, a very horrible place that really tests his phil ophies on life. he makes a friendship with a boy, turner, and they basically navigate iit together. s a heart-wrenching book. it is a difficult book. as so many of colton whitehead's books are, it is based in reality, based in the history and atrocities of america, and it is just as pertinent to today as it was in e 1960s. >> important read. how do you pair food with that era of florida? >>or this was a tricky o me. it is a painful, difficult story. even like in real life, in the most painful f moments,d can be the moment of joy. there are little bits of that here and there in the book. they'ree working in ot sun, and the woman brings them cold lemode. it takes place in the south, in the '60s. i went for a little bit of a southern summer kind of. picn this is a little potato salad.
