count on. this is abc 13 news. thank you for joining us for 13 news midday. i'm noreen turyn. we begin with disturbing news out of rocky mount where police are trying to find out what led to the death of a newborn baby found in a dumpster late last night. annie anderson is digging into this for us and joins us live near where the baby was found. >> reporter: the baby was found here in one of the dumpsters at the blackwater in rocky mount. the police department got a call tuesday evening saying a woman had come in showing signs of just having a baby.police say that woman, 24-year-old catherine, denied having a baby.

they found clues that lead them to believe the baby may have been put in one of these dumpsters. they searched them and found the body of a newborn baby. the baby appeared to be in its third trimester. police don't know if the baby was stillborn or died in a dumpster, but are hopeful they will know soon. >> we are expecting to get results pretty quickly. it is something we want to resolve quickly.>> reporter: depending on what the medical examiner finds, the mother could be charged with them properly disposing of the body or much worse. live in rocky mount, annie anderson. now to the latest information on the killing of 13-year-old nicole lovell. natalie keepers has hired an attorney. the commonwealth attorney said tomorrow. we have also learned a neighbor said nicole told friends she was going to sneak out to meet her boyfriend david, an

the kik messaging app. stacy snyder, whose twins played with nicole, so before she vanished nicole showed her girls david eisenhower's picture and text conversations they shared and said she would be sticking out to meet him. the girls told police that information, but they had not learned about any of it until nicole had vanished. we also learned that kik interactive has been active in helping the fbi carry out the investigation. eva pilgrim has more. >> reporter: new details on the murder of 13-year-old nicole lovell. authorities say at least one of the two virginia tech students had been planning it for weeks. >> a very preliminary determination of the cause of death is stabbing. >> reporter: nicole's mother remembering how her daughter beat the odds fighting to survive childhood cancer and illnesses. >> music, dancing. >> reporter: heartbroken. >> nicole touched many people

>> reporter: unable to complete her statement tuesday. 13-year-old nicole lovell was last seen january 26. her parents a sheep put the dresser up against her bedroom door before climbing out of her window. police say she was killed the next day. her body discovered on saturday about 80 miles south of her blacksburg home. police say the 13-year-old was active on social media with multiple facebook and instagram accounts.nicole also an active user on instant messaging app kik. that is where police believe she met 18-year-old david ivan eisenhower, a freshman at virginia tech. >> i still have goals for myself. there are people better than

i will personally not stop until i reach my peak performance. >> reporter: eisenhower, a former high school track star, now facing charges for premeditated murder. court documents charging his accomplice, natalie keepers, began planning the murder in early january. new charges for her, accessory before the fact first-degree murder. >> noreen: she is not charged with first-degree murder. friends and family will begin to say goodbye. visitation is 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at mccoy funeral home in blacksburg. the funeral is tomorrow at 3:00 at the funeral home. the reward has increased a second time as police search for suspects and monday nights shooting of the danville doctor and his neighbor. an anonymous donor has brought the payout up to $20,000. police say someone shot doctor randolph neal while he was walking home from work and then shot neal's neighbor after he

at last check, deal was that stable condition at wake forest baptist medical center. his neighbor was released from the hospital. a mennonite pastor heading to prison after helping a former bedford county woman flee the country rather than share custody of her child with her former same-sex partner. a judge has ordered kenneth miller to surrender march 22 to begin serving his 27 month sentence that have been delayed pending his appeal process. on monday, and appeals court in new york upheld miller's conviction for his role in helping former forest resident lisa miller get out of the country in 2009 with her daughter isabella. the miller's are not related. prosecutors have wrapped up opening statements and roanoke federal court in the trial for the six people charged with killing a waynesboro reserve police captain. yesterday, 12 jurors and four alternates were seated in the trial for those charged in connection to kevin quick's death.

response to an alarming new case in the outbreak of the zika virus. health officials now report the virus has spread from person to person bisexual transmission, not by mosquito. it happened in texas. elizabeth hur has the latest. >> reporter: a disturbing development out of dallas in the battle against the zika virus. >> it wasn't spread by mosquito. it was spread through sectional transmission. an individual went abroad and acquired the virus and came home and infected their partner. >> reporter: the virus transmitting through sex is rare, but not unheard of here in the u.s. turns out back in 2008 a traveler infected with the zika virus returned home to colorado and his wife later tested positive for the virus. still, officials say this is the first case of sectional transmission in the current outbreak. they also call the latest case out of dallas a game changer because the virus has links to

the first cvs inside of a target opened in north carolina today. it will be the first of many joint locations. cvs agreed to pay $2 billion to acquire the target pharmacy business. all 1672 of target pharmacies will be rebranded under cvs. the virginia tech professor that discovered the flint, michigan water crisis is set to testify today. his speaking to the u.s. house oversight and government reform committee. the hearing will look at the situation in flint and review the epa's administration of the safe drinking water act. home depot hiring 80,000 seasonal workers. a bold sign spring is just around the corner and the housing market remains strong. springs is their christmas according to housing market.

before heading there. mississippi had reports of at least six tornadoes yesterday. a series raced across the south yesterday. the high winds took down trees and power lines, but luckily no one was seriously hurt. melissa, that is the same system heading this way, but we don't expect that. >> melissa: this is the same system bringing our heavy rain today. i want to start with our storm report over the last 24 hours. you can see the tornado reports across mississippi and alabama. damage surveys are going out right now. we have the teams investigating so they can write those tornadoes. for us, heavy rain. it's all things to the cold front that continues to push to the east coast. it is bring wet weather and active weather toward the eastern half of the country. we could see gusty wind and are heavy rainfall.thankfully, no severe storms. you can see the latest look at the surface map. low pressure sitting over the great lakes. a cold front across the entire

coast. let's get a pinpoint doppler radar and show you what we are tracking. i hope you brought the rain gear because heavy rain area. heavy rainfall. steady rain moving through lynchburg. you can see appomattox and altavista with heavy rain. even down to the south side for the viewers in martinsville. heavy rain moving through the chatham area right there along 29. as you zoom north, ludington and lexington along the i-81 corridor, a lot of rain. it will continue to the rest of the afternoon. some areas picking up half an inch. you can see radar estimated rainfall of 1 to 2 inches. the darker green is a flash flood watch.

p.m. the lighter green color is the area flood advisory in effect until the early afternoon. also a flash flood warning in effect. a lot of rain. that is going to be the story. please be careful as you are heading out and about for the day. temperatures, widespread upper 40s. we are in the 60s in danville. it's going to be a mild day. many will make it into the 60s. behind the front, we have quiet weather. we have to get through the rain that continues to push through this afternoon. by 6:00 or 7:00, we see the rain moving out of the area. mostly cloudy overnight. we are looking dry for thursday and friday. the latest look at the rainfall totals, over an inch in lynchburg. over an inch in danville. an inch -and-a-half in martinsville. we will continue to add to that. watch out for localized flooding of streams and creeks. temperatures in the 60s across the board.

there is the nasa is learning more about the sixth planet from the sun. the space agency set new images of saturn along with the data. the vehicle has been studying the planet more than 10 years. they found the opaque rings may not contain the most material despite how bright they appear. research on the massive rings have important implications to their age. so fascinating what they're learning in space.
