>> reporter: well, noreen, if you were coming downwards road any time soon, you will notice some mud on the road. this dirt berm behind me collapsed melting quickly in the son and warm temperatures. we drove around the city checking out road conditions and public works have done a great job of getting the roads clean. crews finished up their shift this afternoon and tell me every road is clear at this time. the sun has even dried up some roads and still some possibility that some roads could refreeze. they treated rose with salt and have crews just in case. the city had $150,000 left in their snow removal reserve fundtheir snow removal reserve fund. she haven't got numbers back from this snowstorm but she thinks they will be within the budget and hopes this will be the last storm of the season. >> in this particular snow, it warmed up right after the snow, so that has been very helpful in helping us get cleaned up -- the streets clean up soon sore really depends on the weather

surrounding the snow. >> reporter: another concern in the city, potholes. public works is working on compiling a list of potholes that need attending to. if you see one that needs attention, be sure to call 856attention, be sure to call 856-city, so they can add that to the list. live in license, katie brooke, abc 13 news. the freezing rain and sleet we got led to a lot of power outages. we caught up with the crew in danville working to restore power. families in the north davis drive off piney forest road woke up without power. the danville utility engineer said a couple of big power lines brought down three utility poles around 1 a.m. and customers have freezing rain to blame for that. >> very dangerous. you wouldn't want to be around it when it happened, that's for sure. >> there is no way to prevent this. cutting all the trees away, that is one benefit, and just keeping the right-of-ways clean.

danville utilities. the city hopes to restore power to everyone by midnight. >> noreen: the roanoke valley was the hardest hit with downed trees and power outages. appalachian power reported 50,000 customers are without power. there are 24,000 without right now. ice and tries again were the main culprit. the ice causes those tree branches, even whole trees to snap and brings down the power poles, of course. appalachian power has called in crews from outside the state to help, but even with that, they don't know for sure when all the lights are come back for everybody. believe it or not, a chance of a little bit of snow tonightof a little bit of snow tonight. george flickinger, we are not talking about anything accumulating though. >> reporter: i don't think so, mark. the temperatures will be too warm. if you were watching it especially toward south side, we are going to see rain and snow moving in. now most of us are going to be cool and dry through 9 p.m. if you look in southwestern virginia, youvirginia, may get some rain in

9 a.m. and 6 p.m. you see this rain, snow mix. most of the snow will occur in the mountains, if you live toward south side, say martinsville, danville, into halifax county, most of this will be coming down as rain, and we will likely see a few slippery roads. i don't think we will see widespread slippery hodeswidespread slippery roads as the temperatures will be a nudge too warm. temperatures falling in the 30s and as we wake up in the morning below freezing for most locations near 30. coming up a little later, we will let you know when all this cold weather moves away and enjoy a nice warm-up. >> noreen: looking forward to it, george. look that the, a gas station in henry county that collapsed on the corner of axton road anding more road. the gas station has actually been closed for several years and remained in very bad shape. they are not 100% sure if that collapse was weather related. the snow might be melting, but the car repair bills are mounting for many of you, and that means a busy time for auto

set to appear in court in june although a judge did not officially convict him today. he was charged with perjury last year after the bedford county commonwealth attorney said he willfully falsely testified in front of a grand jury in the 1975 abduction and murders of sheila and katherine lyons. prosecutors said he lied to protect his sister patricia welch. the wife. a person of interest in the kate. patriciapatricia was indicted for perjury. her trial set for april. they believe the lyon sisters were kidnapped from a maryland shopping center and taken to bedford county where they were killed. we should explain, a no contest claim means no trial by jury and waiving right to appeal in certain jurisdictions. a judge ordered a presense tag report before the next hearing june 7 when we will be sentenced if a judge convicts him. he remains out on bond.

>> mark: yeah, the comments and questions that came out of thatat event resonated with many of you. you know there are more than 1you know there are more than 140,000 licensed gun dealers in the u.s. it is estimated that americans own more than 300 million firearms, but only one agencies in the nation that helps law enforcement agencies solve crimes involving firearms, and as you are about to see, what some say should be easy is far from it. >> reporter: on the outskirts of marathon -- martinsburg, west virginia, some of the important crime-fighting work goes on. the alcohol, tobacco and firearms national tracing center. >> the only facility of its kind in the world. >> reporter: when a crime is committed with the firearm, one of the places that law enforcement turns to for help is right there. >> our goal is to identify that individual purchaser and have that piece of information back to the requesting law enforcement agency as an investigative lead. >> reporter: but may not be quite so simple.

however, we are going to see some of this rain moving into virginia as a trend as it is moving straight to the right, straight to the east. the bulk is from roanoke to lynchburg and then southward across south side and especially into the carolinas, greensboro and down to charlotte. there could be some snow mixed in, but i don't think we will see widespread travel problems. most of this will be falling as rain. looking live, this is near wardlooking live, this is near wards road. this is the route 29 and 460 intersection where conditions are pretty good shape considering how icy it has been the last few days. temperatures 42. a west and southwest wind at 3 miles per hour. around the rest of the area, still all above freezing, and we are going to remain above freezing this evening. good news if you have travel plans at dinnertime. south boston at 47. clarkville, 48. colder toward virginia tech. up toward uva and charlottesup toward uva and charlottesville in the upper 40s. this afternoon highs reaching the upper 40s.

roanoke topped out in the mid-40s after the heavy rain for this morning. at 8 p.m., most of the commonwealth is dry. there will be some snow moving into far southwestern virginia. at midnight, you can see most of this precip will be from near -- near roanoke and lynchburg and southward across south side which means if you are watching us from danville, you will have rain. could be mixed in with some snow, and the bulk of this snow will stay closer to the mountains. at 4:30 in the morning, driving south and driving into this rain and area of snow. and then by the time you get going on your wednesday morninggoing on your wednesday morning, most of this is going to go well to the east, and we will see drier weather. fairly pleasant wednesday and cool. so overnight tonight, we will see lows eventually falling toward the upper 20s and lower 30s by morning. appomattox, 31. altavista, 32. 331 for smith mountain lake. and your hourly weather for tomorrow, below freezetomorrow, below freezing for 9. above freezing at lunchtime.

hi, everybody, virginia has been unbeatable at home. no, really, not lost a single came. 13-0 at john paul jones arena after tony bennett called a sluggish first half last night against nc state, the cavs came to life in the second outscoring 22 held the scoreheld the scoring leader barber to 14 points. london perentes added 19 including five 3s. virginia wins by 20 and improves to 21-5. the cavs off until next monday when they play at miami.
