attorney's office or icac.. mcalexander was assigned a special prosecutor from the attorney general's office in richmond.wes nance/deputy commonwealth's attorney (:09): "when there's a member of local law enforcement that is charged or even accused of a crime, our office has to remove itself from consideration."whit tight mcalexander's next court date is this friday. 3 3 pattie box one of the people connected to the lyon sisters case in bedford county has pleaded no contest to perjury. yesterday, leslie engleking, senior admitted he lied to a grand jury investigating the case of the missing sisters, to protect his sister, patricia welch. her husband, richard welch, is being called a person of interest in the case. patricia welch is also charged with perjuring herself before the same grand jury. engleking faces up to 10 years in prison. 3 whit an iraq war veteran is recovering after he says he was brutally attacked outside a d.c. fast-food restaurant. the incident occurred late last week at a mcdonald's. chris marquez says he was

came up and started taunting him, asking "if black lives matttered?" he says he tried to ignore them.. but then the alleged encounter escalated. was more serious for pregnant women.albert ko/professor, yale university school of public health"and then women who we believe were exposed early in 2015 now are giving birth to these babies with birth defects...so a year ago this wasn't happening, wasn't happening right."whit brazil has gone from 0 to 4- thousand affected babies in less than a year. 3 3 pattie tight there's been a lot of talk lately about whether doctors need to screen children for autism. the statistics show 1 in 68 children have autism spectrum disorder. yesterday, a top advisory group issued a new guideline saying there is not enough evidence to support routine screenings for autism in apparently healthy toddlers. autism affects behavior and communication. the u.s. preventive services task force makes recommendations for america's doctors. it looked at existing research on autism in children ages 18 to 30 months. what they found is there is not enough research for the experts to recommend for or against screening all healthy toddlers for autism.

suggests eating fish more than three times a week during pregnancy could be associated with an increased risk of childhood obesity. the study's author analyzed data from more than 26-thousand pregnant women and their children. researchers followed up with the children at two-year intervals from birth until age 6. the study found pregnant women who ate fish more than three times per week gave birth to children with higher bmi values. the fda and epa recommend pregnant women should eat no more than two to three servings per week. 3 pattie tight there could be a major breakthrough in the fight against cancer... researchers at seattle's fred hutchinson cancer research center have announced a potential new treatment based on what's called "immuno- therapy." that helps a person's immune system fight off cancer cells in a way that's similar to fighting a virus. in the treatment, doctors take white blood cells called t-cells from cancer patients and genetically modify them. the cells are then put back in the patient

and 3 pattie most people spend valentines day with loved ones... but for one little lost baby horse, he spent his alone. whit that is until some kind strangers came to his rescue. he was found on sunday.. hurt at the bottom of a ravine in california. but as amy hollyfield reports.. this story has a happy ending. 3 from the looks of things, valentine is very happy in his new home.his rescuers can hardly believe this is the same colt they saved from a steep ravine ."he;s a million times better than when we picked him up. when we picked him up out of that ravine he was lateral and unable to get

"don't know where she is so we're gonna do the best we can for him. he's 6 days old we def want him to have a great long life."he's on his way. first step is a vet appointment at u-c davis.and even though he looks a bit tentative to step out - his rescuers are feeling confident. by mid morning more than enough donations had come in to cover the cost of the surgery."i can't believe it i

some clouds linger for tonight with overnight lows falling into the upper 20s. mostly sunny for thursday with highs in the mid 40s.3 3 whit tight and through the night, many people in our area have been experiencing power outages.. it's stemming from the freezing rain monday night. right now -- power crews say they're working hard to restore power to everyone.. here's a look at the

reporting more than 16- thousand outages. this is a look at their outage map. you can see most of the outages are in and around the roanoke area -- with almost 6- thousand out in roanoke city and close to 5-thousand in the county. but botetourt county has more than 600. and bedford county has about 450. 3 pattie tight the winter weather that moved through the state caused a lot of problems on the roads. as of yesterday afternoon, virginia state police had responded to at least three fatal crashes on icy roads. monday night -- police say a trooper and two other people were on the median of route 288 in chesterfield county when they were hit by a vehicle, throwing one person into a nearby firefighter. police say that person was pronounced dead and the trooper and the second person were taken to hospital with serious injuries.pattie tight in fauquier county, police say a man died when his suv hit a snow plow. and in loudoun county, police say a woman died monday night when her car rear-ended a backhoe. 3 whit and in madison heights an accident between a car and a tractor trailer sent a driver to the hospital.

state police responded to the intersection of amelon drive and south amherst highway around 8 last night. first responders say it was a side collision. the driver of the small car was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. right now.. state police are still investigating. they don't know if drugs or alcohol were involved. and there's no word on charges. we'll follow this story for you.. and bring you updates as we get them. 3 pattie in lynchburg, the driver of a tractor trailer is facing charges. police say john lee of wichita falls, texas wasn't hurt-- but he's charged with reckless driving following yesterday's accident. police say he lost control on route 29 near kemper street, hit a guard rail, street lamp and bridge, and caused several gallons of fuel to spill out. 3 whit tight this morning we know more about a rollover accident in appomattox. the driver -- antoinette jennings of farmville -- has been released from the hospital after receiving treatment for minor injuries -- according to centra. no word on how the three children

but first responders tell us everyone had minor injuries, following monday's crash. police cited jennings for two child restraint violations -- a 2 and 7 year old were sharing a seat belt in the back seat. 3 pattie take a look at this. this is an old gas station in henry county that collapsed. it's on the corner of axton road and morgan ford road. henry county emergency services says the gas station has been closed for several years and remained in very bad shape. they're not 100 percent sure if the collapse was weather-related. 3 whit and another collapse of sorts caused a big mess in lycnhburg.. it's quite muddy over by river ridge mall.. and it's coming from the big dirt slope across from cook out. yesterday, a beam broke under the weight of melting snow.. and washed mud onto wards road. at last check, crews tell us the scene is under control. untill the mess is completely cleaned up, you can expect your car to possibly get a little messy. 3 pattie temperatures are

yesterday, the melting snow created issues for a lot of people. whit for one woman, the warmer weather has created a mess. marissa parra reports. 3 cheryl rose is tired. in her house, she says when it rains- or snows- it pours. cheryl rose, frustrated homeowner: "i was trying to keep the water from pushing down in my basement, when it down to my basement it had nowhere else to go. it looked like a river!" her lawn was taken over by water from the melted snowcheryl rose, frustrated homeowner: "it just filled up, it was filled up completely. it's a pipe that's been running over for quite a while." so..she says she took action...cheryl rose, frustrated homeowner: "i called them! i spoke to the highway department." but she says nothing has been done. this isn't a new problem, she says.cheryl rose,

were like okay we see you have a ticket in, and i said this has been an ongoing problem for almost two years." vdot confirms she submitted a complaint on september 29th, 2015. according to the website, it was resolved. rose says the flooding shows otherwise.cheryl rose, frustrated homeowner: "this is what... february now? now look, the problem is even worse."cheryl rose, frustrated homeowner: "it's not fair. i pay taxes here, and it's just not fair." she says she doesn't want anything other than the issue to be resolved. cheryl rose, frustrated homeowner: "every time i call they tell me that. they give me a work number and they say i promise i'm going to look into this. and i'm hoping that they will this time." 3 pattie tight a spokesperson for the virginia department of transportation tells us that they are aware of the situation, and they will be looking into it this week. 3 whit tight it's something we all have ... and may take for granted. but it's the most asked for item among the homeless.. we're talking about socks. and the local non-profit 'warm streets' is partnering with many local businesses to help get them to those in need. they've set up kiosks all over the area -- this one is at absolute bridal in downtown lynchburg. the project

and more than a thousand socks have already been donated and distributed to local shelters. and it's raising awareness too. on the scratch ticket."sofia andrade says her fortune soon got even better than that.she had an immediate opportunity to give back.sofia was at a stop sign in new bedford when she saw glenn williams, a man who has been homeless for three years.he was panhandling saturday night in the bitter cold.( sofia andrade / helped homeless man ) "i knew that the money never really belonged to me, that this money was meant to help him." sofia called glenn over to her car and drove him to a coffee shop.( sofia andrade / helped homeless man ) "at no time did i ever feel threatened by him. he was so overwhelmed by just the generosity of a coffee that he just couldn't stop crying."she did a lot more than buy him a coffee.after this single mom learned that local shelters had no bed space, she used her scratch ticket winnings to get a motel room for glenn close to her home in wareham.( glenn williams / homeless ) "it's emotional."( glenn williams / homeless ) "i couldn't believe there's somebody like her. she deserves a lot of the credit
