they hope to have power back on to everybody tomorrow night, but say some people may have to wait until friday morning for their lights to come back on the power company have people working 16-hour shifts and even brought in extra health from tennessee and west virginia. even with the extra help, they say it is still a long process. >> they will have assessors going out and see what the problem is, and then they will send up a ticket and get here and will ground everything first so they can remove the trees. pull back the profileers up and make sure everything is right and remove the ground. close the fuse back in with the switch. >> reporter: and some bittersweet news for students. five schools to cancel classes today because they didn't have power. now as of this evening, all five of those schools have the power back on, but looks as if the snow day is over. live in roanoke, annie andersenlive in roanoke, annie andersen, abc 13 news. a different scene in danville.

had their power on at midnight. one man got his back. >> reporter: thomas was without power for two days when a tree fell on a transformer right in front of his house knocking out power to the whole street. pinepine trees in front of his home were leaning so he did anticipate something like this happen. contract crews came in shifts starting monday morning and left this morning. he says he and his wife have been bundling up ordering food. times like this that he is so thankful for the utility crews. >> oh, man, these guys don't do anything. they come in and they are in the dark like that and -- they clean all their tree out of the way. and my hats are off to them. >> reporter: when the new transformer was installed and the power working, he says he cranked up that heat.

customers do have power now. live in danville, tola adamson, abc 13 news. >> mark: tola, thanks. a live look from our smith mountain lake tower cam as the sun goes down. chief meteorologist george flickinger. we saw a lot of melting today. >> george: most of the snow has melted except for the giant piles you see in the parking lot and with warmer weather, more melting. right now we are in the 40s. 43, and the temperatures will be dropping below freeze big tomorrow morning. so when you wake up in the morning, we will have tempting in the 20s; however, we are not going to drop down to below freezing until toward and after midnight for most of us. this means if you were traveling tonight, you won't have to worry about any icy roads, but in the morning a few slip vis spots near 26, and i don't think we will see any major issues. a little later when we should see snow ruvringsee snow returning in way out wednesday. >> noreen: if would you like more on the latest power outage numbers or weather-related issues go to wset.com.

tonight about all that mud running into wards road from the construction site by the mall. workers are in the process of building a residence inn there. they had to excavate the slope in order to make a retaining wall. as they build that wall, the pile of dirt will backfill into the wall and the mound will go away. a flat spot to build the hotel. the city was on the site when everything happened and they check back in today. >> our job is to make sure that they have their protective measures in place, up to code, and that the site is as secure as possible to avoid these issues. >> the community development department says the wet winter has really messed up construction all over the city until the ground dries out, there is not much more that can be done, but they hope the retaineing wall will be finished in the next month. three people in bedford county are displaced tonight after a fire broke out from a heat lamp.

lamp was on for the owner's cathouseed in the garage. it happened in the 1100 block of shepherd road off of dickerof shepherd road off of dickerson mill road shortly after 4. fire fighters from four different units battled the blaze for several hours. luckily, there are no reported injuries. damage from the fire is estimated at $200,000. federal prosecutors wrapped up their case in the murder trial of reserve waynesboro police officer kevin quick a few hours ago. the last witness fbi agent jason warren analyzed cell phone records that put quick and one of the six defendants near the same location the night he disappeared. mona kosar abdi was in court today. mona, the last record of quick using his phone was on the same road where his girlfriend livedroad where his girlfriend lived. >> reporter: mark, quick never made it to her home where his family said he was headed that night to check on his daughter. today we learned that his cell phone pinged a tower near turtle creek road which is

fbi special agent jason warren testified that one of the defendant sheldon's cell phone pinged the same power minutes before. in fact her cell records that led investigators to his body. another defendant's cell records also place him near the location where quick's body was found the night quick went missing. earlier, we also heard from another government witness, a detective that analyzed text messages between the defendants. he read pages of messages that show the defendants were trying to get rid of evidence, one from mercedes shelton saying, quote, we need to get to montana, asap. the defense will present their case tomorrow. the closing arguments are expected to start on friday. so the -- so the jury can begin deliberating as early as monday. stay with abc 13 for the latest at wset.com. for now, in roanoke, mona kosar abdi, abc 13 news. >> noreen: thank you,

more officers on patrol. last night city council voted to allow the department to hire four more officers that will boost the number of officer positions to 135. and this is going to put one more officer on each shift. danville police chief phillip broadfoot tell us it is almost impossible to be fully staffed. more officers will be a big help. broadfoot say the money to hair them will come from what is left over in the department's budget which is around 300,000. danville police and the danville regional medical center want to make sure you feel safe, they are holding free safety and crime prevention classes next month. those classes will be at dnrc on march 3, 10 and 31 at noon. it comes after one of the hospital's doctors was shot earlier this month while walking home from work. no arrests have been made in this case. the bedford county commonwealth attorney could be stepping into a new position, a candidate for the district

harold black retires at the end of next month. the virginia legislature will have to make the final decision after being through the process. in virginia, judges are elected by a vote of the legislatures within the general assembly. to be considered is an honor. the virginia supreme court is considering whether to intervene on behalf of landowners fight the mountain valley pipeline. justices heard an appeal in a case on richmond yesterday. landowners from giles county rejected coming on their land for a pipeline. the justices are expected to rule in the next six weeks. a solar farm is coming to the danville area. last night danville city council voted to purchase a power agreement for a 6 megapower agreement for a 6 megawatt solar power plant. a developer will build the solar farm on kent church road. it will supply 1.5% of danvilleit will supply 1.5% of danville's power needed for

changed during that period, nonmedical use increased by 67%nonmedical use increased by 67%. and get this, emergency room visits are up by 156%. 156%. that is huge jump. one-half of those er visits were as a result of people who mixed adderol with alcohol or other elicit drugs. >> most of what we are getting from friends and family who had a prescription from a doctor. i have to tell you these are relatively safe when used under doctor's condition, but you don't want to be sharing the drugs. >> heart attacks and psychosis are some of the side effects. definitely you want to talk to adults in your life with. >> noreen: very scary. >> mark: parents be warned.

>> george: let's go ahead and do it and people want to know when are we going to get more rain. and especially when are we going to get more snow. a couple of dates. looking ahead to next week for monday, tuesday and wednesday, the 23rd, 24th and 25th. i think more so for the 24th and 25th, it is looking like heavy rain is going to be likely with snow in the mountains. but there is also the potential that we may have enough cold air around where we could see a winter mess of precipitation, meaning we could see some sleetmeaning we could see some sleet, possibly some freezing rain, and possibly some snow. best advice, stay with us, we will keep you updated on this, but keep in mind -- keep in mind toward the 24th and 25th there is the potential for winter weather across virginia. after that we will finish up february with much colder weather, the 25th and the 29th. after that, a few days that we will have to watch toward february 29 and the beginning of march.

your friday. no travel issues in and out of virginia. overnight tonight, we will see a freeze, but we will not drop below freezing until after midnight for most of news the 20s by morning. mobing, 27. south boston, 29. altavista, 27. and smith mountain lake at 26. we will be below freezing for 8 a.m. after 8:00, forming into the 30s for the rest of the morning. 40s by lunchtime. a high tomorrow of 46 and dropping back down in the 30s for tomorrow evening. around the rest of the area highs in the 40, and south side including danville and south boston. your seven-day forecast, part of the forecast you will probably like. highs reaching into the 60s for saturday and sunday and we could see some rain moving in late sunday. this will be light rain. on monday, a few small showers are possible. then tuesday and wednesday are looking wet. and across virginia, there is the potential for winter precip mixed in. stay with us. we will keep you updated on the
