>> the attorneys wrapped up 12 and a half hours of closing arguments. annie andersen spent the day in court and joins us now with the latest on this, annie. >> reporter: the kidnapping and murder of kevin quick may have man with led the government to investigate the six people on trial. those are not the only charges that the jury will have to decide on. four of the six people are charged with usecharged with using a gun to kidnap and kill quick and violent crimes in aid of racketeering or vicar. they make up two-thirds of the 34 charges that the jury has to decide. other third are a federal charge. but the main umbrella charge in this whole case is racketeering conspiracy. that is the charge that in closing arguments the attorneys really went against because if the jury doesn't find the six guilty on those counts, the robbery charges will go away because racketeering must be involved in those charges. the jury could still find them guilty of the gun charges though.

of the defense attorneys came into the hallway and told kevin quick's brother he was sorry what happened, saying he had hoped that the defendants will plead out. he will be back in court tomorrow waiting for the periodtomorrow waiting for the period. >> mark: mark annie, thanks. a pennsylvania county man is charged with life in prison. he severely beat a woman that later died in the hospital. andrew doss was found guilty of thatlicious bodily injury and a jury found him not guilty on second-degree murder. a witness testified in court that doss admitted to hitting mary hooker in 2014 after she made a sexual advance at him. hooker was in the hospital more than a week before she died. abc 13 has been following a string of break ins in around the darington neighborhood. there has been nine burglarythere has been nine burglaries. katie brooke spoke to the neighborhood and police and

home safe, katie? >> reporter: noreen, these break-ups have been happening right here along chamber street and surrounding streets in the darington area. police say they are happening in the daytime when folks are not at home, and they do believe they are related. detectives are following up on several leads right now. they say things taken include consumer electronics, cosmeticsconsumer electronics, cosmetics, clothing, firearms and other household items. and residents say they are unsettleled this is happening so -- unsettled that is happening so often. >> i hope they do catch them, because it is not safe for anyone really. they could come this way or another way. it is really not safe. >> reporter: police say here is what you need to do to lessen your chance of being victim. work together with your neighbors and report suspicious activity to the police. check on your neighbors' homes when they are at work or on vacation.

office. they will know more after the autopsy but sheriff's office does not suspect foul play. several of her animals were dead, and neighbors believe the surviving pony and alpaca are ill because lack of food and water so they have been feeding and watering them. somebody buried the dead alpaca and dead pony last night. a spokesperson from the state's vet's office that the animal control officer called them last night asking for guidance and said that the county is handling it. we reached out to the supervisor for that area who tells me that the county is investigating the situation. danville city leaders have decided not to hire a private firm to run its water plant saying it is too costly. ken larking says an outside firm will cost taxpayers an extra 300,000 every year. larking said the city was looking at the option because it is challenging to keep trained water treatment operators pupt tilts commission

forward with that project. bedford county school leaders can move forward with the design of a new middle school. they approved a $44 million budget. that is about $7 million over the initial budget they approved. the school board chairman tells abc 13 architect will now design the tool, and then it will go through the bidding process. they are hopethey are hoping to break ground by november, and the goal is to have it all done in time for the 2018 school year. a local community college is embracing black history month by use as an opportunity to teach students of a wide variety of cultures. all month danvilleville community invited people to special programs, and today a very special treat. valerie bragg a live in danville with that story tonight, valerie. >> reporter: the college is asking someone to come in and give a speech. they want to make this event -- all those events fun that way more of their students will

ch the forecasts you can count on from the abc 13 weather experts. >> george: let's jump straight into it because i want to you know what is headed our way so you are prepared. in summary it is going to rain tomorrow. that part of the forecast is easy to figure out, and i want to show you the timing and how much rain we are expecting. if you have any plans tonight, we are only going to get drizzle and light rain. tomorrow, the heavier rain arrives and will be heavy at times. you may hear thunder tomorrow and when the rain is moving through, it is possible that you could see some small hail. if it is going to be windy when the rain moves on through. most rainfall totals a half an inch to over an inch of rain. this is the additional rain that we are expecting on top of the rain that has already fallen. many of had you questions of the questions of strong storms. this map shows what we are expecting. overall we see the brighter colors. the yellow and the orange where the stronger storms are going to be. so this is generally south and east of lynchburg, especially through the carolinas.
