i hope to see you this is a live look at this hour of the damage left behind in appomattox county. a story we have been covering for you for hours now after this possible tornado ripped through the evergreen area around 3:30 this afternoon. live coverage of this breaking story next at 7:00. >>announcer: anytime, anywhere, award-winning

is abc 13 news. >> danner: we want to get right out to the scene where this possible tornado touched down today. mona kosar abdi is live right now in appomattox county in evergreen. mona, what are you seeing tonight? >> reporter: danner, time in front of what is left of jack baker's home. his family tells me the 89-year-old was actually home when the storm hits. he was sitting in that comfortable when high winds ripped the side of his home offripped the side of his home off. fortunately he is okay and suffered minor scratches and injuries, but his home is completely destroyed. down here what you are looking at is actually the basement. he wasn't able to get down there in time. and out here, there is what is left of the side of his home. now his family was nice now let me go inside the home, and there is broken glass everywhere, furniture moved around. so they are shifting through it right now. you can see they are looking through what they can recover.

looking for his bible. and they told me the most touching story. they say sitting on the table right next to his comforter was a little angel. a figure of a little angel and they say that angel was looking over him. the 8 or 9-year-old is not here at his other home. his son, friends and other family members out here shifting through this, seeing what is left of the damage, but he is not alone. there are so many others here in evergreen that are dealing with the damage. out there, there are fire trucks because outside of his home, a tree that toppled over is also -- has pulled down power lines. so crews are working overtime right now to -- power lines. no power in the area. you saw earlier that is his family there shifting through everything with flashlights. so definitely this is a devastating scene. but fortunately the people of evergreen are coming together to help each other out.

>> danner: thank you, mona. just incredible damage. the video sent in to us from a viewer from appomattox county. you can see here what appears to be a tornado coming togetherto be a tornado coming together. you can see the wind really start to pull that debris in as the funnel cloud really takes shape there, and then the tornado touches down. watch this just for a second longer until you see everything come together because it is almost all of a sudden -- there you go. coming down out of the sky. touching the ground there, and then you can really see the debris whipping up around this -- as it takes shape. let's go thrive marissa parra in appomattox county. 18 minutes down the road where we saw mona on central church road. what are you learning, marissa? >> danner, in the i have been here it has been really chaotic and all of us are trying to piece together what happened here. what we know -- turned the

see this house showed you earlier was a little hard to see because it was nighttime. the own her left this trailer thanksgiving it would be safer to go into his car and it turns out -- that when the tornado struck, it flipped his car over and pinned inside. we will bring you back over here. luckily he was not hurt -- sorry, the female inside the truck was not hurt, but had this owner of the house stayed inside where she was originallyinside where she was originally, she probably wouldn't be have gotten rescuedwouldn't be have gotten rescued. but she is safe now and only suffered minor injuries. over my shoulder we showed you another house that had been destroyed. we talked to the homeowner. she declined the interview because -- you can understand she is very distraught. very upset by what happened. but she was at a doctor's apartment when this happened, and when she came back, this is what she saw. no one was injured. she had no pets and everyone is safe.

alive. back to you, guys. >> danner: thank you, marissa. take a look at this devastating video this time from waverly. this is where we are seeing the fatalities tonight. this is what we know right now. virginia state police say three people are confirmed dead here in waivrlly. the death tolz in all from last night stands at 5. police say at least five within waverly are damaged. they are going to notify the next of kin of those people who are dead and then release their names. much more on that to come. to chief meteorologist george flickinger who has been following the story from the very beginning when we were doing twul wall coverage as that tornado. you said you saw it on the radar touching down. >> that's right, danner. we begin live coverage around 2we begin live coverage around 2:30 when we had the first tornado warnings for the danville area and also near chatham.

our local severe weather threat has ended. it is going to be breezy this evening. wind may be picking up at your house. we will get light rain and severe weather threat has ended and the strong tropical storms rumbling their way across eastern virginia. richmond has tornado warnings tonight and waverl glshtion southeastern virginia, all the storms moving to the east and northeast and if you have friends or family near williamsfriends or family near williamsburg, these storms will be headed that direction. and for us the severe weather threat has ended and temperatures right now in the upper 50s a quick summary what is happening for now. come toing up later a map of where severe weather has been reported around virginia. >> danner: thank you, george. now thrive valerie bragg who has been on the scene of downed trees in danville and pennsylvania county. valerie, show us? >> reporter: time in danville, and the winds have really started to pick up within the last hour.

compared to what we had earlier today. we got video right outside of our video around 2:30 this afternoon. heavy rain, heavy wind. we even had hail the size of nickels falling down. could i hear it pounding on the roof while i was inside. that storm knocked down several trees in our area one in danville. klaipd home on fairmont avenue. no one was home at the time. i went to a downed tree near a thursdaying home in pittsylvania county. and this one was speaking because it fell on top of a power line. we are not sure the exact number -- power at that location, but nearly 500 people without power when a tree fell near there earlier on today. and also i just spoke with a city representative from danville. he tells me there are still about 200 to 3 about 200 to 300 people without power tonight. live in danville, valerie bragglive in danville, valerie

dominion power transmission is giving us an update on the significant power outages from the storm. they were really effected. a live act the current affected outages out there. over 2300 members that are -- in the dark right now. cbec is waiting restoration by dominion. when they get that they will assess the damage. a lot of are you asking when the power will come back on. they have a lot to deal with and working on that as we speak. the. the pictures sent into us from folks like you. pics@wset.com. the trees uprooted. out on 460 assessing the damage. there was quite a bit of traffic there. take look at this one. a tree right down in the middle of the car. just smashing it. sheer velocity of these winds sending these trees toppling today. and more of those viewers

what have you been seeing, katie? >> reporter: well, d well, danner, i want to show you right now this tree, one of the dozens i have seen uprooted. large trees. the ground is so saturated and wind so strong that so many of these trees are down in the area. i can tell you we have been up and down 46 -- 460 for hours this evening an traffic has been very slow. sometimes it was at a stop. sometimes it has been slow. state police are here and they are doing the best they can to keep traffic coming and going and i am told consistently by a lot of the people on the scene that it is over in the evergreen area back there is where the tornado actually touched down. that is what some people are telling me and tons of first responder os going back there. chaos. so much going on and stay out there and bringing you the very latest that we can. live in appomattox county, kate, abc 13 news. >> george: as you can see from katie brooke's live shot, the

you where we have breaking news coming into the news rhyme rhyme right now. abc 13 has learned that students are stuck at appomattox primary school because of this severe weather. we have heard from concerned parents about this. this is what we know at this hour. the school board chair in appomattox tells us that his wife works there and many of the staff and the kids can't even get home. part of the challenge there is the school buses weren't able to get to the school because it happened as the storm was moving through. so the staff may have to make provisions for everyone to stay there overnight. our courtney whedon is there on the scene. we will have the very latest developments at appomattox primary. we will bring that you

at wset.com and here on the airat wset.com and here on the air. george? >> george: yeah, danner, we were live on television giving you the severe warnings as it went through brookneal and the heart of the virginia. a summary of the storm reports nipwhere there is a little icon representing -- a small tree that you see right there. representing wind damage, so we had our first storm damage reported in pennsylvania county including danville right through here. you can see all the reports of the storm damage and hail reported near chatham. power lines down inpower lines down in pennsylvania county and storms made their way through south boston and the storm that the tornado warning really got going toward brookneal and to the north and east of brooknealthe north and east of brookneal. right there that tornado that is showing where the tornado crossed highway 460. the national weather service will be out surveying and will get more information as far as the exact track of the tornado, but that shows new relation to appomattox where that tornado occurred. we had other severe weather

into far eastern virginia. strong storms and tornadoes north and east an south of rich monday and a lot of tornadoes in north carolina as well as into the southeastern parts of the commonwealth. now the storms are done; however, you may notice the wind picking up this evening, because we are going to see the actual cold front moving ewe through but the stormy weather has ended. on pinpoint doppler radar. the meteorologist in eastern virginia toward richmondvirginia toward richmond, tracking these thunderstorms with a warnings in effect. and strong storms make their way into richmond and also into northern virginia. they are getting the strong storms right now. but for us, quieter weather is ahead. now the temperatures still at 59, but we are going to be falling closer to midnight. until then the temperatures are going remain very mild until the cold front and the cooler air makes its way in. it pun thing we were also talking about yesterday that the severe weathers will be

temps in the 60s we saw temps from danville toward appomattoxfrom danville toward appomattox. right through here and east of that line. that is where the severe storms got going. overnight tonight, our wind advisories in effect throughout mountains as you will see wind gusts over 30 miles per hour. we are going to be cool and dry tomorrow. there will be snow on the western slopes, but locally, we are going to stay dry, and as we advance our way into friday, we also have drier weather. overnight tonight, those will be falling in the lower 40s. and still possible you could get a few lingering showers and not anymore severe weather tonight. and for tomorrow, get ready for windy day. you will want your coat with you. highs in the upper 40s and lower 50s. your ourly weather shows you will be cool all day and dry locally. your seven-day forecast looks better for the weekend. drier weather ahead for your saturday and sunday and near 50 on saturday and warming up nicely to near 60 by sunday.

let's go to the phone. diane with centra joins me livediane with centra joins me live. diane, we were talking a little earlier, you have patients that were transported to centra's er. >>caller: hi, danner. yes, so far we had two patients that have come into lynchburg general hospital. those injuries right now are minor. some lacerations, a shoulder injury. and then we have -- also had five patients come into our centra south side hospital in farmville. two minor. and those injuries look like head trauma from lacerations, back injuries. >> danner: are you expecting as the recovery process through the night more people heading into the er? are they prepared for that? what are they doing as they head into the evening. >> sure. we have gotten word the incident command center in

rescue teams are more active. there is a potential for more patients. we are ready at lynchburg general and south side hospitalgeneral and south side hospital. we have trauma surgeons that are currently here and a few on stand by. >> danner: thank you, diane. we will be checking in with you throughout the evening. this is very fluid situation and i know you are keeping and staying on top of that and we will make sure that we stay on top of that well.

let's head back to appomattox where we find will stafford live. will, you are at the wal-mart in appomattox. and there are some stuff going on there tonight? >> reporter: danner, if you look down there -- i will step out of the way -- dan is going to zoom down. we are actually at the murphy, which is right above the wal-mart, the highest point pretty much in appomattox. the wal-mart is completely without power.that is pretty much the entire time.

-- that and the light from our truck is the only light for appomattox. we have a witness -- if you want to come in and step in here. you are an employee of the murphy station. what exactly was your experience today? >> well, actually around 3:30 at the high school picking up the kids, they sent out an emergency signal for everyone to get into the high school. that a tornado had touched downthat a tornado had touched down, hail fell. severe rain. we were locked down into the high school for 45 minutes before they let the traffic back out, and then the entire town was down and there had been a couple of touchdowns. so there is a little bit throughout the town of appomattox, but as you can see, everything is pretty much black and dark. no businesses are up. so as far as we know, that is pretty much all we at this point. >> reporter: all right, ma'am, appreciate that. send that back inside to you. >> danner: thank you, will. we have several teams out in appomattox county covering this story for you from all angles.

tonight. just in the last few hours, a federal court jury found the defendants in the kevin quick trial guilty of all charges. he was the waynesboro police officer kidnapped and killed in 2014. quick's mom vonda was leaving the court just minutes after hearing the verdict. quick's young daughter was in the court as they read that the defendants were guilty. more than two dozen other charges, racketeering and violent crimes and aid of racketeering and various other charges for those crimes. >> i am not going to tell that you it is not the verdict i
