severe weather yesterday. for the rest of the workweek, we will see quiet but breezy conditions for the heart of virginia. i'll have the latest up next. 3 3 pattie good morning virginia. it is thursday, february 25th. i'm pattie martin. 3 pattie this morning -- appomattox county is in the dark. now some families are cleaning up what's left -- after a possible tornado touched down there yesterday afternoon. 3 pattie tight this morning we have team coverage of the storm damage in appomattox.. melissa lefevre is tracking the latest in the weather center. len stevens and tola adamson are live on the scene in appomattox right now.. len to you first -- what have you seen out there.. 3

3 pattie tight we have learned this morning that appomattox county officials will be holding a press conference at 7 this morning. we will carry that live here on abc 13. that reported tornado devastated the community of appomattox. marissa parra spoke with one survivor that shows just a small taste of the destruction many of his neighborhood has seen. 3 chris walker, tornado survivor: "i was at the back 3 door and i was looking and i actually seen it coming. i seen clouds that i've never ever seen in my life. i was talking to my mom's on the phone and i said mom i got to go!"and that's when chris walker sprinted to the bathtub. chris walker, tornado survivor: "this is where i got, right here in the tub. and i just rode it out."this is how he survived the that nearly killed him.chris walker, tornado survivor: "the only place i could think to go! yeah... and it just shook

here... it picked up and took 3 it next door." butted "and i'm so glad it didn't land here because i was in here."chris walker, tornado survivor: "this is the most serious moment i've ever had in my you never think it's going to happen to you." 3 pattie tight appomattox deputies and firefighters were searching the woods and all of the houses in the area to make sure that everyone is accounted for. we will keep you updated as we get new information. 3 pattie in the next half hour of good morning virginia -- we'll introduce you to a man who lost nearly everything.. but through on his face. 3 pattie 3 people are confirmed dead in waverly. severe storms ripped through the hampton roads region.. and state police say.. many roads are impassable. storm damage was also reported in newport news. 6 people.. including 4 children.. are without a place to live.. after a large tree fell on their home. the national guard is helping out the storm victims. there are expected to be more than 50 soldiers on duty this morning in the eastern part of virginia. governor mcauliffe has also declared a

3 3 3 pattie box gleaning for the world is also doing its part to help those dealing with the damage in appomattox. we were there as crews stopped at the walmart to gather supplies. walmart gave them water, flashlights, snacks, and ice to hand out to those impacted. gleaning took along blankets, pillows, and heat and eat meals.. trying to find people in shelters.rev. ron davidson,

3 3 pattie tight new this morning...one lane of route 58 eastbound is closed right now at the pittsylvania/halifax county line due to a jackknifed tractor trailer. crews on the scene tell abc 13 the truck was carrying dog food, and wrecked around 1 this morning. there's no estimate right now when they will be able to get the lanes back open. no serious injuries in the crash. 3 pattie tight in other news this morning -- a lynchburg man is in jail after

police."steven elliot of 2023 lakeside drive, we have a warrent for your arrest. come out with your hands up" (:06) this was the scene around 9:30 yesterday morning. police say officers responded to the 2000 block of lakeside drive to execute an arrest warrant for steven elliot. elliot was wanted for a probation violation steming from a child porn distribution charge. officers surrounded the home for 3 hours, calling for elliot to come out with his hands up. he finally came out of the home and was arrested without incident. 3 3 pattie tight make sure your cars are locked! the bedford county sheriff's office says there have been 10 cases where someone has stolen items from unlocked vehicles over the last week. this has been in the goodview, moneta and huddleston areas. stolen items include cash, credit cards, firearms and electronic devices. if you know anything about this, call or text crime stoppers. the phone number to call is 888-798-5900. 3 pattie still to come on good morning virginia... we hear from local business

3 pattie box this morning we are hearing from area business leaders about news the lynchburg hillcats will be here for at least 10 more years. as we first told you yesterday, on tuesday, lynchburg city council approved a franchise agreement for the lease of city stadium. the lynchburg regional business alliance says minor league sports brings so much to the community-- tourism, economic growth, and quality of life for residents. the city of lynchburg says the hillcats average about 32- thousand 500 dollars a year in meals and sales tax. and they've seen huge growth in attendance over the years. appomattox county sheriff, barry letterman, has confirmed to abc 13 that one man has died due to the storm. we're told he was in his 70s. state police tell us his home was destroyed by the reported tornado that swept through evergreen and red house. his remains have been taken to the medical examiner's office for identification. police say the total injured in appomattox county is 7. 3 pattie tight our len stevens has been out this morning in appomattox county. len, what does it look like out there this morning?len

3 pattie tight this morning -- a number of families are trying to figure out what comes next. many of them lost so much in a matter of minutes. but mona kosar abdi spoke with a man who lost nearly everything.. but is still looking on the bright side. 3 "it's unbelievable"jimmy womack.. sifts through piles of debris...where his garage once stood "it's probably totaled i don't know"the damage too great too track. "this is devastating"womack says he was home when the weather conditions took a turn for the worse."i told my mom to come to my house because i have a basement and she doesn't.although his mom lives next door she said the winds were too strong to make it over."i saw it coming so i told mom to lay down in the hallway and cover her head." womack stays the roof on his mother's house blew right off. but nothing compares to the damage done to his uncles house 2 houses over."i can't believe it"fortunately everyone walked away with only a few minor scrapes and cuts.
