you. this is drone footage of appomattox county. you can see all of the damage, what is left after a deadly tornado swept through evergreen and red house. one-man in his 70s died due to the storm. state police say his home was destroyed by that tornado. in all, seven people also hurt. less than 24 hours after the storm, the community is coming together to move forward. we have team coverage of the aftermath. tola, the news conference wrapped up just minutes ago. tell us what you learned. >> reporter: that's right. i'm outside the appomattox county courthouse where the press conference just finished. we heard from the county public information officer as well as the sheriff. the sheriff gave us the name of the person who died as a result

his name is edward keith harris. he was 78. search and rescue found him not too far from his home in the evergreen area. officials are urging people to please stay away from the impacted areas. there are still down trees, downed power lines.very dangerous situations for people driving or walking around. there are still many without power, about 40 percent of the county without power. they are asking people to not eat any food that has been out of temperature. also, they have two shelters available, appomattox community center and the fire department. our area is a very loving area, a supportive area. many people are asking how they can help, how can they donate. what officials are doing right now is gathering information from local relief agencies so they can make sure people who donate are really going to get their donations to the victims that really need them.

she said the community is strong. they're really supporting what another. they will get through this. >> we want to extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy and we will work together as a community over the upcoming weeks to support one another, keep each other safe, and overcome the challenges this naturally that has brought to appomattox. >> reporter: we also heard the governor, terry mcauliffe, will be in appomattox today. he will be visiting evergreen baptist church to survey the area. evergreen is one of the areas where they got the most destruction right there in appomattox. we also heard that at 3:00 p.m. the media will be invited to the appomattox courthouse for another press conference with more updates. as we get the updates, we will

and on social media. back to you guys. >> danner: law enforcement from across the region are out there and so is the red cross and god's pit crew from debris. mona kosar abdi is with the folks cleaning up in appomattox county right now. mona. >> reporter: danner, i'm standing in the part of evergreen that was probably the most hardest hit by yesterday's tornado. take a look at brendan murphy's home. it has been reduced to rubble. right now, they are shuffling through the debris seeing what they can salvage. she said the family was not home at the time the tornado came through, but there were two dogs inside they were able to rescue. they are also looking for any pictures. she said the family recently took a trip to disney world and it meant a lot to them. they were able to save those pictures. it has been a wild scavenger

the kitchen sink is over here. there is furniture back there. there are teddy bears the kids used to play with. not everything belongs to them. it doesn't help it is still really windy out here. some of the stuff is being blown to the other side of the field. some other people's properties being blown onto this field. definitely, a long road ahead. right now, they are just thankful family and friends are coming out to help. there are volunteer groups here. we will be keeping an eye on this cleanup effort and bring you the latest as we get it. >> danner: we have been on the scene talking to the people affected. chris walker is one of them. he is survived by getting into his bathtub. he looked out the back door and saw the tornado coming.he said the tornado should a house 20 seconds and then silence. my life.

not know what he is going to do next. there is still plenty of space open in the appomattox shelters for folks needing a place to lay their heads. red cross and social services are running the shelters located at 220 community lane. trucks were dropping off supplies just hours ago. the other shelter is at the pamplin fire department. the world is looking for monetary donations as they work to help the people of appomattox county. we were there as crews stopped at the walmart together supplies last night. walmart gave them water, flashlights, snacks, and ice to hand out to those impacted. they took blankets, pillows, and meals.>> i was with a family this afternoon when they found out their homeplace had been destroyed. this is the kind of damage we work with and we are used to

we have a clear picture of just how many tornadoes touched down in virginia with this storm. melissa le fevere has that from the weather center. >> melissa: it was an active day all up and down the eastern seaboard. 20 tornadoes yesterday. nine of those were in virginia. i want to take you right to our storm reports graphic. you can see two reports in appomattox county. one of them in evergreen. . you can see two reports in appomattox county. one of them in evergreen. another 12 miles to the southeast of appomattox along route 460. we had seven injuries and one casualty with a tornado that occurred at 3:35 yesterday. over 425 wind reports. the good news is we are seeing clearing skies. we're going to see the dry weather continued through the weekend. temperatures are cool.

mid-40s. you can see the power cam shaking. that is going to be the biggest culprit in the weather. we are seeing sustained winds of 10 to 15 and 20 miles per hour. wind gusts over 25 miles per hour. take a look at the full forecast coming up. heartbreak in the hardest hit town of waverley. at least four people dead including a toddler when a tornado toss their mobile home. survivors are still shaken almost a day later. >> this went about 3 feet off the ground. when you drop back down, the windows when pow. the storm's shredded homes in north carolina. the storms damaged buildings in lancaster, pennsylvania. also in the northeast, blinding rain and downed power lines. the rolling sea overturned a coast guard vessel that went to rescue a fishing boat. all the coast guard members made a home safely. extensive coverage for you
