houses talking to people... many of whom lost everything. mcauliffe also met with phil hysell of the national weather service who says that this storm had gusts of 120 miles per hour. mcauffe said after seeing the damage, that really wasn't a surprise. sot- mcauliffe (:12)"we saw a lot of debris in trees. but you see an area with a bunch of people out on the ground going trying to find some treasured memento and hoping they can recover something" annie satlive sadly after natural disasters we always see people trying to take advantage of the people who lost everything. i asked mcauliffe how they plan to keep that from happening. he said they already have people on the ground watching out for that. live in appomattox, annie andersen, abc 13 news. 3 3 3 3 mark waverly is another area hard hit by the tornado. three people are dead there... a 2-year-old child and two men, ages 50 and 26. police say the toddler's mother was also in the trailer

governor mcauliffe met privately with several relatives of the victims. he says the family lost everything and does not have money to bury the child. the national weather service rated that tornado as an ef-1, with wind speeds of 100 to 110 miles per hour. its path was 9 miles long and 300 yards wide. 3 noreen tight rescue crews search and rescue efforts to make sure every single resident is accounted for tonight. katie brooke spoke with the appomattox rescue squad and joins us live with what's happening right now.katie liveu noreen, these teams of first responders have been working since the moment the tornado hit. they've gone door to door, making sure anyone missing is accounted for. the final tally-- one fatality, 78 year old keith

7 people.. 5 of them are home from the hospital tonight. captain susan walton of the appomattox rescue squad says two of their own ems workers lost their homes. she says the last 24 hours have been overwhelming and tough to deal with. another task they're dealing with-- getting generators to those without power who need oxygen-- or taking them to shelters-- but they're grateful for the help of so many organizations helping them get this monumental job done. now that everyone is safe.. putting lives back together is the next hurdle. live in evergreen, katie brooke, abc-13 news. 3 3 3 3 mark tight one of the most important takeaways is that the storm may be over but it is still potentially dangerous to be outside. right now no one is even thinking about the re-building process... the focus is still on assessing damage, cleaning up and taking care of those without homes - human or animal. vdot says all roads are passable right now. and from what we heard, times may be tough but the help is just pouring in. 14:30 we've had a tremendous outpour of water donations, food donations, volunteers to assist, but at this time we are still doing the assessment period. 14:44 mark tight the lynchburg fire department is also collecting non-perishable food, bottled water, clothing, cleaning supplies -- things like that

there are several other organizations also collecting too. we have that information at wset.com. now as for volunteers to come out and help clean up -- the county administrator says they will post on their website when they need you. 3 3 noreen tight when doug smith-coach of appomatox high school football team put out the call for help to his guys-he says there wasn't a hesitation. today they spread out in groups to help the community that has cheered them on all season. suri crowe has that story. suri sat live this tornado hit home in the literal sense for the football players of appomatox high. not only is this their community but two of their own players homes were damaged or destroyed. coach doug smith gathered his team to lend a helping hand and they were out in force clearing debris-chopping wood and in the midst of all this

(((nat/pop- "the big dresser, that was my moms. and i told you my mom's room is over there." shrugs.))) daniel poole still can't believe.. he's alive in fact, the only reason he says he is...is because of this man. "this wall lifted up and that's when i hear chris yelling, 'daniel, come on.' so i ran back this way and chris grabbed me and through us into this closet there and we stood there until it was over." chris wright was at the poole's home...painting...when the tornado struck. the home pulled off the

basement.chris wright- "we really walked out. it's hard to believe. i definitely think somebody put their hand on top of this basement and saved us.""the family is spending the day, walking around their property looking for anything they can salvage. they're thankful for finding the smaller stuff like articles of clothing, like this glove and some of their favorite coffee mugs, like this one that says, "life is good." but it wasn't the coffee mugs or the found shoes that put a smile on their faces. zoey...the pet cat...was pulled from the rubble. wrestling champions from this past weekend in salem. brookville's reid stewart won his second state title in three years, as did amherst county junior jeffrey allen, who pinned his opponent in less than a minute. reid's brookville teammate austin wilkerson won his first state title, as did lca's mason wolk, the bulldogs' first as a new member of the vhsl. jeffrey allen, 4a state champion - 195 lbs. (amherst co.)- "last year losing in the finals was a big disappointment but this year i won and got state title number two so i'm very fortunate." reid stewart, 3a state champion - 120 lbs.
