3 noreen tight this is a live look at the cub creek area of appomattox county.,.. where you can see it's another area hit hard by the tornado.. and cleanup efforts are underway. 3 noreen plasma thanks for joining us for 13 news midday .. i'm noreen turyn. we have a lot to cover today. 3 noreen tight we begin with an area we haven't seen a lot of- the cub creek area of appomattox county. mona kosar abdi joins us live with more on the recovery efforts there. mona? mona liveu the community response has been incredible. volunteers from all over have been helping clear the debris from homes---like this one-- severely damaged by the tornado. we have teachers and students from appomattox county high school. even players from the school's football team are out here to lend a helping hand. this tragedy has affected two of

a look at what's left of ??'s 3 home. it has been reduced to rubble. but help has been coming in, from more ways than one. we caught up with dr. chris king the pastor of the evergreen baptist church who tells me donations have been pouring in."incue: we were just overwhelmed by...... outcue: over the next few days"mona liveu3 dr. king says at this time they do not need anymore perishable food donations. he says for those that would like the donate should look at their facebook ---that is where they will be posting what items are most needed.

people need to come if they want to volunteer. i've seen numerous people coming here to help. there is someone on the scene now he will take your details and register you as a volunteer. all volunteers have to go through a background check then i'm told later on today they will get information on where they can volunteer. volunteers will be assigned a task and will have to record the hours they work. then after if they want to they can be reassigned to another task. it's important to note that you cannot just go into the evergreen area anymore. this plant is used for parking and to shuttle volunteers to and from the worksites i

likely a miracle sharanda and her one year old daughter are able to stand there at all. sharanda and her daughter were alone in the house when she saw a tree go by, and she ran to the basement with her daughter. she found an old mattress " god took over me and literally threw me under this mattress over here and i held my baby and said god no please help us."///" that's the only thing that saved me because if you look here the wind took everything except that mattress. " noreen but it's fate the mattress was still there. she and her husband had planned to throw it in a landfill just days before. 3 3 noreen plasma one of those injured has his dog to thank for alerting him a tornado was coming. this is all that's left of the burchett's home in evergreen. army veteran jake burchett was asleep when his dog dixie woke him up. the force threw him against a brick wall, and he ended up with head trauma, but he's

mother is still in shock.sandy burchett, tornado victim: "this is kind of a& all my memories, with all my kids. i raised my kids by myself, so this is kind of hard.." 3 noreen unfortunately, dixie was found dead underneath pieces of the house, but they credit her with saving jake's life. 3 3 noreen plasma two shelters are still open right now. one at the pamplin fire department. the other at the appomattox community center.nats we got some crackers and some granola bars..thank you so very much, hopefully someone can make use of it.noreen shelter officials tell us.. several people have come through in the past two days. at last check, there were a just a couple people staying overnight. many people have been dropping by to give.. and pick up donationed items. the shelter staff says they're very thankful. 3 noreen plasma thankfully for cleanup efforts much calmer weekend ahead of us.. we'll toss it to melissa

3 today will be mostly sunny, breezy and cool. high temperatures reach the low to mid 40s. temperatures will be in the upper 30s north and west toward the mountains. winds won't be as strong as yesterday, but we could still see gusts over 20mph. the weekend forecast looks picture perfect for any outdoor plans. enjoy mostly sunny skies both saturday and sunday. tomorrow's morning lows will be in the 20s and we'll see highs in the upper 40s to near 50 tomorrow afternoon. a nice warm up arrives for sunday as highs reach the lower 60s. 3 3 noreen plasma we're learning more about the gunman in yesterday's mass shooting in kansas and the heriocs of a police officer.

33 a danville man was injured after a knife attack last night. officers were called to the 1-thousand block of halifax road just after 11 last night about a fight, and found a man sitting on the back steps of the house with a knife wound to his neck. he was taken to danville regional medical center. 43 year old kenneth huggins is charged with malicious wounding. he's being held in the danville city jail without bond. 3 noreen plasma four people are confirmed dead in a shooting spree in kansas. police and co-workers say 38- year- old cedric ford is responsible. ford has a long arrest record but the reason for the shooting is still not known. bazi kanani reports. 3 investigators are getting closer today to understanding
