primary in the on the same day since 200. they usually see a low voter turnout compared to the voter election. only 2% of votest cast their ballot in the 2007 primary. >> a lot of people just do not vote in primaries. so i think it will be 30% for both primaries together. >> danner: we'll be watching those returns. polls open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 7:00. record turnout for primary voters for one of the two political. we look at the trend and what may be driving it. >> i'm very angry. >> he is resonating with the people and speaking our minds. >> this is a really angry electorate.

equal enthusiasm? but here in 2016, that anger is translating into votes. look at voter turnout in the first few states to vote. it's increased everywhere. and for democrats, the turnout has waned. >> sometimes it's hope as we saw in 2008. and sometimes it's anger, fear, frustration. >> reporter: one expert says that the fact that there have been so many republicans in the race has helped that they've built a stronger infrastructure to get out the vote. >> it's not too late to be great. >> reporter: some perceive the race to be over and that a hillary clinton victory is over.

reported a shortage of ballots. and poll records are being broken in several states. in the general election, voters instead may look for the candidate that gives them hope for the future. >> they say i played by the rules and i did everything i'm supposed to do, and i can't get ahead. and the people above me are getting the breaks. and people below me are getting the handouts. >> danner: for the second time in recent mosque donald trump university. trump wasn't the focus. instead, it was what was happening in the audience. while kicking out a group of

security detained a photographer at the event. >> reporter: security was escorting some political science students out of the rally when all of a sudden everybody's focus was to this. >> get him out. >> reporter: it's time magazine journalist, chris morris, who got into an altercation with one of trump's secret service agents. trump's media manager said that media could leave the media pen and stay there until trump left the building. morris said he took a small step outside the pen. the secret service agent grabbed morris and slammed him to the ground.

from experts, live reporters from key campaign locations across the country. the brush piles are disappearing as crews clean up the mess in evergreen. volunteers are stationed at the evergreen baptist church to collect important things that people find. they have found checkbooks and other personal documents. the police department is asking people to turn in these items so they can catalog them and get them returned. >> if somebody has your item, you would like for them to be able to turn that stuff in to get it back to you. >> danner: l.p.d. will be in evergreen throughout the week. and if you're missing something, go to evergreen baptist church.

not get a tornado alert that the tornado was on the way. it was supposed to go to every verizon landline and to everyone that signed up for alerts on their cell phone. they are investigating the failure, but the company responsible for the notification service is to blame here. we reached out to eatton. and they say they were just made aware of the failure today and they don't have a conclusive answer as to why it happened. >> the company has assured us they fixed the problem. they haven't explained why it happened. >> danner: this is the first time an alert like that has not functioned since the system was put in place. jesse matthew is expected

murder of graham and harrington. matthew could have faced the death penalty in the graham case. he also faces first-degree murder charges in the death of morgan harrington. >> big money and coming to lynchburg and bedford county. $1.9 million is being awarded for area development. lynchburg is set to get $186,000 for the academy of music theater. bedford county is set to receive $600,000 for the bedford brewery block development. the governor says the redevelopment of properties is key when it comes to revitalizing downtown historic areas. in two minutes, we'll

giving the gift of music to preschoolers. averett university announced an initiative called growing up musically. tola adamson tells us how it all works. >> reporter: 12 preschool classes in danville are integrating music into their curriculum. >> research informed that a lot of preschool teachers do not have music training or don't have a lot. they didn't feel comfortable leading music activities because they weren't musically trained. >> reporter: averett universities' initiative, growing up musically, g.u.m., integrates music. instructors use songs that children already know.

called boom whackers. >> exposing children to music early improves child development. >> the practice of music increases communication between the left and right hemisphere. if your brain is functioning better, you're going to do better in school. and they haven't found any other art that does the same thing. >> reporter: and after each visit, averett teaches leave a lesson plan. and it is a 12-week pilot program. if it does well, it could be expanded to all preschools in danville. and a police officer is shot dead this weekend. we'll hear from the sergeant

weather and skies. this weather system is making its way across the middle part of country in the rockies. we're going to see it arrive this time tomorrow night. we're cooling rapidly after sunset with the clear skies, diminishing wind. farmville, 59. blacksburg, 50. and 50 in martinsville. now, here's what you can expect as far as the timing of the rain. the first part of day looks beautiful. we'll have a lot of sunshine and nice temperatures. upper 60s and lower 70s. now, during the evening, the few showers are going to approach. here's at 11:00 p.m. and you can see it's showing rain in the heart of virginia. we'll see heavier rain in the mountains.

could hear thunder, but we're not expecting severe weather. wednesday at 3:00 a.m., there are going to be a few showers. and then we'll see all this rain rapidly clearing. most of the rain is going to fall when you're sleeping. wednesday afternoon, we'll see clearing skies, but it's going to be colder as colder air blows its way on in. this shows rainfall totals and estimates. most of us will be 0.25 inch. for tonight, we're going to see the temperatures falling. with lows in the 30s. appomattox 34. alta vista 35. danville 36. your hourly weather for tuesday. notice how rapidly we're going to be warming up. 10:00 a.m., we'll be in the 50s. and lunchtime, 60s.

towards 70 in the afternoon, especially towards southside. it is going to be windy for your tuesday. south boston in the lower 70s as well as danville. rain possible tuesday night-wednesday morning. and here comes the colder weather with highs in the 40s. if we get snow, it is going to occur on friday. look at these temperatures. any snow that does fall is going to have a tough time sticking. we'll keep you updated, but right now it looks like a mix of rain and snow that's going to have difficulty accumulating. >> danner: i want to introduce you to baby eli, the first leap year baby born in lynchburg. his parents, megan, and austin

>> danner: an accused cop-killer faced a judge today. army staff sergeant ronald hamilton will remain behind bars without bail. the 32-year-old is charged with the murder of his wife and a rookie police officer just one day after she was sworn. officer ashley guindon and two other officers responded to a 9-1-1 call for domestic violence on saturday. when they arrived, hamilton opened fire. >> we weren't expecting it at all. >> danner: investigators found

the home. his 11-year-old son was inside but unharmed. an active duty member of the navy received a special honor. chief special warfare operator -- is part a team that performed a daring rescue raid in afghanistan. he used his own body to shield colleagues from fire. >> my entire military career and life, i've lived a very quiet and discreet life. so with this award, it's not something i asked for.

people put me in for and thought that my actions that day were deserving of this award. with that comes some obligations. >> danner: buyers was the second navy s.e.a.l. to enter the building with the hostage. the second was shot is -- and i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message. her life's work has been about breaking barriers. and so would her presidency. which is why, for every american who's not being paid what they're worth... who's held back by student debt or a system tilted against them- and there are far too many of you- she understands that our country can't reach it's potential... unless we all do. together.
