we're also tracking rain. we'll let you know when it will move in. >> mark: officials in appomattox are trying to figure out why some 3,000 people never got a warning about the tornado that hit there. one person was killed. marissa para looked at what lynchburg does to warn families in harm's way. marissa? >> reporter: mark, as soon as my photographer, tony, and i crossed into appomattox county, we got the alert. it was loud, efficient, and got our attention. the same can't be said for everyone. this is the tornado alert that popped up on phones sunday afternoon. it is the warning that chris walker's mother received. >> i was at the back door and i actually seen it. >> reporter: these alerts save lives. they tell people to take action now. but alerts can only help when

and up to 3,000 people in appomattox county didn't get the message. and a number of you have let us know on our facebook page. melissa foster assures us that lynchburg is prepared. >> the alert system that we're using uses multiple paths and ways of alerting. so that makes it more reliable during those types of emergencies. >> reporter: staying alert requires a little bit of effort on your part. go to the lynchburg government's website and sign up there. make sure your alerts are turned on. no cell phone? >> no problem. >> if they have a landline, they would still receive a message on that land line through lynchburg alerts. >> reporter: lynchburg residents didn't get an alert because they weren't in the tornado's path.

waiting until we're in the middle of some type of significant storm. to make sure that you get that information and stay informed early on. >> reporter: now, a spokesperson from eatton released a statement saying that we were just made aware of this today. we are looking into the situation and the do not have any information at this point. >> mark: thanks. tomorrow the virginia department of the housing and community development and lynchburg community action group will be in appomattox. they'll be there to help those affected by the tornado. the groups say they'll help identify housing options with financial assistance. they'll be at evergreen baptist church from 9:00-4:00. applications will be provided. a local principal found himself behind bars this weekend for allegedly assaulting his life. dennis seamster is a principal

school. his wife called 9-1-1 because he pushed her during an argument. when police arrived, they saw a knot on her bed. tonight officers carried fallen officer ashley guindon to a memorial chapel. she was shot and killed this weekend responding to a domestic violence shooting. >> [inaudible] >> mark: the suspected shooter, army staff sergeant, ronald hamilton. his wife was found dead inside the house and their 11-year-old son was unharmed. guindon had just been assigned to that shift the day before.
