a nearly month long occupation of federal land in a small oregon community by small group of protesters came to a violent end. militant leader "ammon bundy" and his followers were reportedly heading to a community meeting tuesday afternoon when they were stopped by fbi agents. seven people were arrested. another person... arizona rancher and protestor lavoy finicum was shot and killed by an officer. nocg"there were at least four or five federal cars

agents...they were behind the cars guns drawn it looked like whatever it was was over" all of the suspects face federal conspiracy charges. bundy and his group came to oregon to protest the sentencing of father-and-son ranchers convicted of arson on federal lands.### the fugitive is behind bars .. and now the sheriff is rewarding those who helped put him there. in a story you'll only see on wsls ten .. lindsey ward was there... as the alleghany county sheriff honored more than a dozen people for their work capturing a double homicide suspect on the run from west virginia. # it's a weekend, so a lot of stuff is closed. you just got people traveling through to the homestead, to the greenbrier. on saturday november 28th lieutenant casey gibson would come across an out of towner passing through .. but that someone wasn't heading to a weekend getaway. this is .. 22- year-old aaron bussard .. he's accused of

marlinton west virginia .. and that quiet saturday morning .. he was spotted .. in alleghany county. this is route 60 is what were traveling on. this is the route he came into our county on. it wasn't one of these deputies or officers who spotted bussard .. but kevin wolfe and his father kenny. kevin remembers seeing a facebook post to be on the look out in the highlands for the murder suspect. :50 i kind of jokingly said it i was like oh i wonder if that's that car they're looking for and i got up there to it and looked oh man, you know, this is him. right away he called 911 and spoke with dispatchers. she said can you make sure it's him. i said it's him, i can see him, it's the car, it's the license plate, it's him for sure. after the call .. lt. gibson started 1:15 i really didn't know what he was going to do. i got behind him, activated my emergency to

suspect pulled over .. into this field ... but sat inside his car .. with several guns and ammunition. after two hours of failed negotiations .. police took bussard down with a tazer .. and arrested him. an arrest that may not have happened .. had kevin and his dad not been so observant. 1:40 without the initial call from the citizens i don't think we would be here today, the guy still may be on the loose somewhere. it's something that i'll never forget for sure. i'll be able to talk about it for a good while, so it'll be something me and him get to share together forever. a father son story .. that lead to a murder suspect arrest .. and even a little recognition. smith mountain lake shooting victim vicki gardner was honored tuesday by the state senate. gardner received a standing ovation while visiting the capitol for her success as executive director of the smith mountain lake chamber of commerce. she returned to work part time on monday. gardner was being interviewed on live television in august of last

injured. the two journalists interviewing her were killed.### in what's news today... the town of christiansburg continues talking about stormwater... during an informational meeting tonight. last year, town council formed the stormwater stakeholders committee... to explore how to address federal and state stormwater requirements. in december... the committee presented its recommendation which includes a stormwater utility fee structure and rate. town council is expected to talk about the proposal in march. # the college board is hosting a-p recognition day. its meant to celebrate virginia school divisions who increased access to the advanced placement program... while improving performance... and supporting the team of a-p teachers and students. the event will recognize five school divisions near richmond and northern virginia. # members and executives from chambers of commerce across the state, including some from southwest virginia, will meet in richmond today for chamber day. the chance to hear from state leaders, including, governor terry mcauliffe and

carilion clinic holds a recruitment event for nurses today. recruiters and staff will be there to talk about open positions. the event takes places at the cambria inn on reserve avenue from noon to 5 p.m. carilion stonewall jackson hospital in lexington cuts the ribbon today on its expanded nuclear medicine program. the hospital purchsed a nuclear medicine camera which provides high quality imaging and reduces radiation doses by up to 50 percent. the camera will be primarily used by the cardiology department.### if you plan on taking a weekend getaway this year... you're not alone. according to a recent enterprise survey... more than eight in ten responders plan to take at least one weekend getaway this year. that increases to nine out of ten for those who are married or have children under the age of 18. many won't be traveling far from home. nearly 80 percent of those surveyed said a top benefit of a weekend getaway is exploring new places closer to home. # no surprise here.

food is pizza. that's according to a study conducted by the harris poll... which is one of the largest running surveys measuring public opinion in the u-s. just over 22- hundred adults in the u-s were surveyed and 15 percent listed pizza as their favorite comfort food. turns out that's nearly double that of any other food choice. chocolate and ice cream tied for second.###

opportunity to travel the world... and shoot video for national geographic. sarah woodruff, scheeler's step daughter: "he loved to share that knowledge to anybody that would listen. he had books and books and he has movies alphabetized. and he wanted to share that show everybody else how cool it could be." the medical examiners officer says five people died from hypothermia--- including reports in in wise... and henry county. # roanoke county fire and rescue crews are working to remove snow from area fire hydrants. officials say there are close to one thousand fire hydrants in the county and last week snow has left some of them covered. fire crews cleared some of those hydrants. the chief is asking homeowners to check nearby hydrants to make sure firefighters can reached them. stephen simon / roco fire & rescue chief:"a lot of the snow was pushed up against them so you cant see where the hydrant is. so at night our map books show us where the hydrants

all you see is snow. so having some of the hydrants cleared out does help us." firefighters keep shovels and hoses on the trucks and can clear snow if needed. however.. residents can help crews save time during emergency situations by making sure there is a clear path to the hydrants.### new this morning.. two people were killed and three others were injured... after a shooting at a homeless camp in washington state. officers responded to a call of shots fired at a homeless encampment in seattle known as 'the jungle.' one victim died at the scene... the second died at the hospital. three others were hurt. police and swat teams say they are searching for two people of interest. the police chief says she believes the shooting was not random. chief kathleen o'toole - seattle police department "we don't think they were targeted because they were homeless. we think they were targeted specifically because of who they were." butted s/mayor ed murray - seattle:23 "this is a tragedy. it involved homeless people, and the causes of homelessness are complex. there is no simple answer, " seattle's mayor has been under pressure to deal with the

a murder suspect who entered an alford plea in lynchburg learns his sentence today. according to the lynchburg commonwealth's attorney, dominique moss entered the plea on first-degree murder charges in october in the august 2014 death of his cousin.. evidence shows that he ambushed the victim... sean moss and shot him 17 times. in exchange for the plea, two gun charges against moss were dropped. he could face 20 years to life in prison.### we now know more about an accidental shooting in halifax county. the sheriff's office says a woman was shot... after someone nearby was randomly firing a gun sunday. one of the shots hit the woman in the stomach. she was taken to duke university hospital... and is expected to survive. the halifax county sheriff's office says this should be a reminder that randomly shooting a gun is not a good idea. maj. tommy spencer/halifax co. - "that's certainly something we would encourage people not to do. that's not the way we would like anyone handling firearms." but to maj. tommy spencer/halifax co - "i think that'd be a

sure you're shooting into a safe backdrop and make sure you've got plenty of yardage even beyond that." the commonwealth's attorney will decide if any charges will be filed. # bedford county employees can now bring guns to work if they have a concealed carry permit. the board of supervisors voted unanimously to take the gun restriction out of the employee handbook. in addition, the county attorney took a look at possible issues before the meeting monday night. he said the county's insurance premiums will not be affected and liability issues could happen with or without a restriction. "bedford county ten years ago you never had to lock your house you never locked your car you didn't have to worry about things but the world has changed and has changed fast." other nearby localities allow their employees to carry concealed weapons including lynchburg and campbell county.### a doctor on duty in newtown connecticut... on the sandy hook shooting.. is working to address gun violence as a

a group of doctors... supporting a handful of senators in their effort to fund research on gun violence... through the centers for disease control. doctor begg says his research shows if you own a gun... you or your family are more likely to die from gun violence. begg: either your spouse will die or your child wll die or you may die if you become somewhat depressed or upset and commit suicide." the doctors point to research paid for by the government on car and truck safety.. as an example of how research into gun safety by the c-d-c could result in fewer gun deaths. # happening today.. students from all over the commonwealth will meet with local senators to discuss student loan debt. senators mark warner and tim kane will host the conversation with student government leaders from fifteen state universities. experts say sixty percent of virginia's college students will graduate with some debt with the average student loan topping 26- thousand dollars.

senate begins consideration of the higher education act. student leaders from ferrum college and radford university are scheduled to attend.### school improvements... and security upgrades are among the projects roanoke county plans to invest in over the next decade. during last night's board of supervisors meeting.. county leaders discussed proposed capital improvement projects. one of the biggest chunks of money will go toward renovations of cave spring high school. it will cost the county about 30 million dollars from 2018 to 20-26. other highlights include proposed funding for courthouse security upgrades... and replacing public safety radios. supervisors will continue to review the proprosal... and are expected to adopt the plan at the end of may.### plans to build a wind farm in botetourt county are moving forward after the board of supervisors unanimously approve a permit for the project during tuesday night's meeting. supervisors were met with opposition from both botetourt

runner's chief challenger, texas senator ted cruz. trump quickly tweeted his appreciation for falwell's support. falwell is the son of the late televangelist jerry falwell, who founded liberty university. cruz launched his campaign from liberty last summer. happening today - the senate judiciary committee holds a hearing on the heroin and prescription drug abuse epidemic that has taken hold in many communities around the country. the centers for disease control reported earlier this month that the rate of deaths from drug overdoses that involve opioid pain relievers and heroin increased 200-percent between 2000 and 2014. lawmakers are hoping that today's hearing will lead to action from congress.### someone from virginia who traveled outside the united states has tested positive for zika, a mosquito- transmitted virus. the mosquito borne virus can cause health issues for adults... but the consequences are more severe for pregnant women... as it can be deadly for babies.

across an out of towner passing through .. but that someone wasn't heading to a weekend getaway. this is .. 22- year-old aaron bussard .. he's accused of murdering his grandparents in marlinton west virginia .. and that quiet saturday morning .. he was spotted .. in alleghany county. this is route 60 is what were traveling on. this is the route he came into our county on. it wasn't one of these deputies or officers who spotted bussard .. but kevin wolfe and his father kenny. kevin remembers seeing a facebook post to be on the look out in the highlands for the murder suspect. :50 i kind of jokingly said it i was like oh i wonder if that's that car they're looking for and i got up there to it and looked and that was it and i was like oh man, you know, this is him. right away he called 911 and spoke with dispatchers. she said can you make sure it's him. i said it's him, i can see him, it's the car, it's the license plate, it's him for sure. after the call .. lt. gibson started following behind bussard. 1:15
