moore says a k-9 search dog from the alleghany sheriff's office was called to scene but the suspect was not located. greenbriar deputies of west virginia are assisting with the investigation. charges are pending this morning following a crash in washington county. it happened at the intersection of route 19 and route 6-33. police say a honda civic ... driven a 17-year old girl attempted to turn south on route 19 ... pulling in front of a tractor trailer --- causing the two vehicles to collide. the driver of the 18-wheeler was air lifted to the hospital and the teenage driver was taken by ambulance. both suffer from serious injuries. the search for a missing blacksburg teenager continues today. a virginia tech drone with infrared technology was used during friday's search for 13-year old nicole lovell. officers from seven agencies ...including the f- b-i.. are still focusing on the mile

thursday night at the temple baptist parking lot and a "go fund-me" account has also been set up to help pay funeral expenses. local and state law enforcement agencies are teaming up ... to protect children. the group "virginia crime prevention association" is educating students and parents in the alleghany highlands ... about the dangers of social media. investigators talked about knowing the features of social media apps and making sure parental control services available. parents at the meeting say they have major concerns about how easy it is for children to post material online. i worry about photos, i hear stories about since our daughters are girls, i hear stories about girls posting pictures for boys and they stay out there forever," organizers say they hope to eventually have a presentation for families in roanoke county in the coming weeks. law enforcement suggest parents should consistently

any explicit images that may have been shared. a lynchburg man is in jail on multiple child porn charges. 41-year-old clifton trent was arrested at his home ... and charged with distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography. police started looking into trent ... after an investigation into a case of online sharing of child porn. he's currently being held at the blue ridge regional jail in lynchburg. in what's news today... the virginia- maryland college of veterinary medicine at virginia tech and virginia cooperative extension hosts the beef cattle health conference. the conference is designed to give beef cattle producers an opportunity to learn strategies to improve the health of their herds. it's happening today from eight a-m until two- thirty this afternoon in virginia tech's litton-reaves hall. registration is eight dollars. medical students hit the court

now to what's trending today... a look at the biggest social networking, online and technology talkers. south carolina police are searching for a suspect after they say he and another man attempted to rob a barbershop. the robbery was all caught on surveillance video. as you can see here, the video shows two masked and armed men entering the columbia barbershop. several people including children were inside the business at the time. the suspects demanded money from everyone in shop. that's when two customers with concealed carry permits shot at the suspects ... hitting one of them. chauncy harris says its something he will remember

"there was hollering and screaming and stuff like that. kids were in here. i thought that he was definitely going to shoot me in the back of the head because he told me to get down, so i got down on my knees with my hands up. and he said get down again and smacked me in the back of my head." the suspect who was shot, later died. meanwhile the second suspect escaped. strong winds knocked down trees and powerlines during a tornado in southeast florida and it was all caught on camera. take a look at this. members of the saint mary's anglican church believe the tornado hit right in their courtyard. surveillance video shows patio furniture being lifted in the air and the winds nearly blowing a delivery man away. the national weather service confirmed an e- zero tornado touched down in delray beach on thursday. winds reachd up to 85-miles per hour causing several damages. according to reports, no one was

when the carolina panthers hit the field next weekend for super bowl fifty ... their cheerleaders will be behind them to cheer them on. one top cat says dancing has always been apart of her life but says dancing on the big stage come next sunday hasn't sunk in yet. leslie spearman grew up in pickens county in south carolina. she attended clemson university where she danced and cheered as a rally cat. spearman is now in her first year as a n-f-l dancer with the carolina panthers. ""i'm very excited that we've done so well this year and that we're heading to the super bowl during my first year as a top cat, during my first year in nfl cheerleading i never thought that that would be a reality, but here we are!" she is now a high school science teacher near charlotte and says she plans on cheering for the top cats for years to come. still to come in the second half

run -- possibly in this white van -- stolen a day after the escape. lt. jeff hallock lt. jeff hallock/orange county sheriff's department: "i can't reiterate enough the importance of the white van. we believe that mr. nayeri and mr. tieu are together in that white van." hossein nayeri is the suspected ringleader. prosecutors say nayeri -- attacked a man four years ago -- doused him with bleach -- set him on fire -- cut off his genitals -- and dumped him in the desert. while in jail -- police say nayeri had an inappropriate relationship with teacher nooshafarin ravaghi. a law enforcement source says the pair exchanged flirtatious letters -- which investigators found after the escape. ravaghi taught english as second language at the jail. investigators say nayeri attended her classes. but investigators think the two iranian natives bonded over their first language -- farsi. lt. jeff hallock/orange county sheriff's department: "nyeri speaks english, why he was attending that class, and again that connection, whether it's from iran we're not exactly sure. that's very much a concern for us." investigators say ravaghi

inmates a map of the maximum security jail -- but denies giving them the tools to break out. the sheriff says the inmates cut through half- inch steel bars - snaked their way through plumbing tunnels and made it to the roof of the jail. then investigators say the inmates cut through barbed wire fencing -- tied bed sheets together -- repelled 50 feet down a wall -- and disappeared. lt. jeff hallock/orange county sheriff's department: "we are coming after you, we are pressing forward and we will take you back into custody." i'm mary moloney reporting. a connecticut couple will be in court today after police say they locked their adopted children in the bathroom. authorities say george barnes and his wife nacie are the adoptive parents accused of locking their children inside a bathroom for days -- and in some cases months. only allowing the kids to leave to go to sleep or school. police say one child was forced to stay in the bathroom from september until mid december and eventually released after police started asking questions. another form of punishment was

the bathroom and read books. the parents had a baby monitor system set up so they could see what the child was doing authorities say the children have been removed from the home. the parents are out on a 35- thousand dollar bond and face multiple charges. a drug round up in montgomery county is now over. several dozens of people have been arrested during the county's "operation hard days night." the montgomery county sheriff's office ... along with other law enforcement agencies started the operation on wednesday. deputies say more than 50 people have been arrested on 70 outstanding warrants. the operation also lead to 40 additional drug and firearm charges. turning now to wsls ten political coverage .. hillary clinton is battling a close contest with bernie sanders for the iowa caucuses set for monday. and new details about her use of

the nominee this issue will be a big part of the republicans democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders opens a field office in roanoke today. this is sander's campaign second office in the commonwealth. virginia is one of the 11 super tuesday states voting on march first. bernie sander's new office opening is happening today at one p-m at 19-27 franklin road. doors open at 12-thirty and is free to the public. virginia state director peter clerkin will be on site to speak to supporters. students in roanoke returned back to school this week after several snow days. wsls ten's jenna zibton gives us a look at how roanoke city schools made sure students were eating even if they weren't at school. roanoke city students were back in school this week... but roanoke city schools make

long snowy weekend. five schools sent packs of food home with students before the snow started... thanks to a $2- thousand dollar donation from member one. churches, civic organizations and businesses donated money and supplies to make the program a reality. at fallon park elementary, 200 students received the food bags. the new bill would create "school protection officers," who would be teachers, administrators or any other school employees who would be allowed to carry guns or pepper spray at school. the school employees would volunteer for the additional responsibilities and would have to go through a new two-week training program at the criminal justice academy. school employees who have concealed weapons permits would be allowed to carry their guns at school, as long as they keep them concealed or locked in a school firearm safe. the represenative sponsoring the bill says schools are gun-free zones now, and that makes them a target... he says if someone intent on shooting up a school knew that any

might be armed, schools wouldn't be targets. as you can imagine... it's a controversial proposal. # student leaders from 20 virginia colleges traveled to capitol hill wednesday to discuss their challenges paying for college and the impact of rising student loan obligations during a roundtable conversation organized by senators mark warner and tim kaine. the students were from a wide range of schools... including ferrum college... and radford university. about 60% of virginia college students graduate with student debt... and the average debt load in virginia now tops 26- thousand dollars per student. the students shared their concerns... and many urged more transparency and flexibility in college loan application and repayment programs. jenna zibton, wsls 10 # now to jonathan kegges with a look at our forecast. savor the warmth as we close out january because it won't last long.

this week's best moments. a roanoke church is looking for a permanent solution to help keep homeless people off the streets. this effort comes after the church took in several homeless people in need during the winter storm. church leaders at paradise cathedral are working to find an alternative shelter for about 25 to 30 homeless men and women. bishop joseph mayo says .... they're reaching out to other local churches and pastors for help. he says they're in need of personal hygiene items, food and donated clothes. radford residents don't have to wait any longer to go for a swim at one of newest facilities in the new river valley. thanks to an agreement between radford and christiansburg.. radford recreation center members can use the christiansburg aquatic center free of charge. radford will reimburse christiansburg at one thousand dollars a month for six months. the deal comes after radford residents have been asking for pool access for more than a year.

since then.. the aquatic center has received more than 250 visits from radford residents. a new restaurant is officially opened in blacksburg. zoes kitchen opened for lunch tuesday. it was this time last year town council approved an exception to allow parking in front of the proposed building at first and main shopping center. zoes offers fresh, mediterranean food-- including soup, sandwiches and kebobs. it's the chain's third store in virginia behind lynchburg and charlottesville. zoes is open every day from 11 to nine. local college students are working to help those in need. the gamma alpha chapter of omega psi phi fraternity incorporated are

the entire region is invited to come out and help contribute to the cause. it's happening today from ten a-m until two this afternoon. you can drop off your water donations at the "que house incorporated" in roanoke. monetary donations are accepted and will be put towards the project. as you may know, the city of flint is suffering from contaminated water --- making it impossible to drink or use. hunger continues to be an issue across the commonwealth and right here in southwest virginia. each year - thousands of families rely on food banks to feed their children. but wsls 10 is once again teaming up with feeding america southwest virginia and kroger for the 10 cares food drive to help. feeding america supplies food pantries across the area with enough food to help those in need in each community. hunger is an issue that has no demographic. jenny mccormick with the salem food pantry says there is a number of reasons why people end up needing help. the robbery was all caught on surveillance video. as you can see here, the video shows two masked and armed men entering the columbia barbershop. several people including children were inside the business at the time. the suspects demanded money from everyone in shop. that's when two customers with concealed carry permits shot at the suspects ... hitting one of them. chauncy harris says its something he will remember forever. "there was hollering and screaming and stuff like that. kids were in here. i thought that he was definitely going to shoot me in the back of the head because he told me to get down, so i got down on my knees with my hands up. and he said get down again and smacked me in the back of my head." the suspect who was shot, later died. meanwhile the second suspect escaped. strong winds knocked down trees and powerlines during a tornado in southeast florida and it was all caught on camera. take a look at this. members of
