>> thank you for joining us tonight. i'm john carlin. we have a live report from iowa where the results are coming in from the first caucus. >> what a night. here at iowa caucuses in des moines, still a virtual tie. hillary clinton who had a substantial lead in polls going in, just .4% above bernie sanders who desperately wanted to beat her here. on the republican side, all kinds of headlines. ted cruz with a head line win. marco rubio with a very strong percentage. just behind donald trump, rubio -- donald trump proved he can be beat and i know he was here in iowa. >> reporter: ted cruz is the

another person remains in the hospital tonight. bree, what do we know about the people who were involved? >> reporter: the two people worked for aep and i'm told they were both from out of town. the vehicle was struck at a train crossing. people who live nearby are trying to figure out what went wrong. these charred remains are what's left of the vehicle involved in monday's crash. it was hit by a train along these tracks by a spring hollow access road. jc whitlock was stunned to see the amount of rescue crews in their neighborhood. >> i see smoke rolling up where the fire trucks were parked down in there. >> that whole road lined up with vehicles but we couldn't tell what went on. >> reporter: investigators say two aep workers were inside the

crossing and was hit by a train. william linebury died at the scene. crews took 22 year old johnny collins to the hospital. >> we did transport one stable patient. it was multiple systems, multiple body systems involved in the trouble. >> this was the scene as crews spent much of the afternoon searching for answers to the crash. the whitlocks can't imagine what went wrong on this day. >> i used to get out and walk up that road and cross the railroad track. >> when you can see both ways real good if a train was coming. >> reporter: and with trains, cars and people coming through the area daily, investigators hope to determine the exact cause of this crash and prevent something so tragic from ever happening again. >> and police say the train was material.

in the studio, wsls10. new at 11:00, danville police are investigating a shooting that sent two men to the hospital. police say it happened a little after 7:00 p.m. 49 year old doctor ran dolph neil told police he was walking home when he was approached by two men who demanded money. police say dr. neil was shot several times before the suspects ran away from the scene. after the first shooting, a 48 year old man says he was shot in the 100 block of virginia avenue. both victims were taken to the hospital. anyone with information is asked to call danville crimestoppers. two suspects charged in connection with the killing of 13 year old nicole lovell made their first appearance in court this morning. 18 year old -- improper

accessory after the fact. today was the first opportunity many got to see the accused in person. nicole's father and his family attended today's hearing. few details came out of the arraignments. according to -- eisenhower deliberately killed nicole. >> these two individuals took my daughter from this planet and i want to know why. >> keeper's hired her own attorney. the blacks burg community continues to be the site of a major police investigation tonight. state police dive teams scoured upon virginia tech's campus for the second day in a row. a criminal investigations unit was parked in the jefferson

survey equipment to gather evidence there. lovell's family have been members of this church for the past 5 years. her youth pastor says she rode the bus to be at sunday school there every weekend and the news of nicole's death has shaken the entire community. >> shock. disbelief. and uncomfortable right now. i mean this, is home for not only this church, but for a lot of people around here and nobody wants to see stuff like this anywhere. and so -- a lot of hearts that are broken. >> aside from her church, we learned the middle school she attended is taking measures to help students cope. we want to bring you up to speed. we've been following this story since nicole was first reported missing 5 days ago. >> we've put together a time line of information that

nicole was last seen in her home between midnight and 7:00 last wednesday. >> virginia state police issued an endangered child alert. they looked for her on land and by air using drones and cameras for 4 days. on saturday, blacksburg police charged virginia tech freshman david eisenhower in the abduction of nicole. >> on friday, police found nicole's remains just over the state line. >> on sunday, blacksburg police arrested natalie kiefers. story. there's a lot we don't know. when we're not on the air, you

report on last year's amtrak derailment. there's no evidence that the engineer was texting before the crash. the data show the train's engine was functioning normally and there was no objects on the track. the passenger train derailed on may 12th as it entered a curve at 106 miles per hour, more than twice the speed limit. police report overall crime is down in the star city, however violent crimes including murder, rape and robbery have remained the same. comparing 2014 to 2015, officers responded to an increase in militia shootings. in 2014, police investigated 34 shootings, one of which was deadly in. 2015, there were 29 incidents

>> let's talk about violence. you want to talk about danger? i showed you. roanoke per thousand has a better crime rate than a lot of cities in our area, our state, our region. >> elsewhere, jury selection began for 6 alleged gang members in the murder of kevin quick. that trial is being held in roanoke after a judge declared a mistrial. this time all the potential jurors are anonymous. they're referred to as a number based upon questionnaires they answered. all 6 suspects are charged in a total of 34 violations and are expected to be associated with a gang that is a faction of the bloods. one of the lawyers talked about the proceedings.

one roanoke city police officer is changing his look, but it's all for a good cause it. all started with a bet when a fellow officer asked him what it would take to get rid of his mustache. he has had a mustache for 30 years now. he says if the police department can internally raise $2,000 for the american cancer society, he will shave his mustache. >> i would imagine that the skin underneath probably will be a little bit pale since it hasn't been exposed to direct sunlight in three and a half decades. >> a little spf on there. tardy says he did lose his father and grandfather to cans and he thought it would be a fun way to honor their memory. now, the area's best weather cast as awarded by the associated press. >> we could have a little

so tomorrow looks to be a day where we'll have drizzle around. wednesday looks to be the day around. we could have thunderstorms embedded in that. i would think around dinner time, the showers and thunderstorms will be for the most part gone on wednesday. so what to expect on wednesday: heavy rain, flooding possible and there is a chance of stronger thunderstorms as well. for the day tomorrow, looks like we're going to have an enhanced threat for severe weather for kentucky south into tennessee, parts of alabama and mississippi could have damaging wind and even an isolated tornado can't be ruled out. the storm system tomorrow will be stronger as it moves overhead to us for the day on wednesday. we're going to have a chance for wintery weather.
