they were calm. they hung out a long time and there were no frantic cell phones. i thought, they either knew they were going to win or knew they were going to lose. they built the model with the capacity to go to 170,000. it went bigger. they knew they were going to do well last night. >> what is trump supposed to make of this? is it just, he didn't organize well in the end for iowa, and it's iowa specific, or is this a sign that perhaps the support you see in polls over and over again, that there's less than meets the eye when it comes down to voters writing down his name? >> the answer to both questions are yes. meaning that, look, if people are not people that are used to participating in the process, guess what that means? you'll work even harder to get them out to vote. look, he spent -- he crammed for a college exam, and he did a lot of really good organizing in the last ten days of this. i think now we look back, he may have saved himself from finishing second.

had he not put the extra effort he did in the last ten days. >> cruz gets bragging rights and heads forward to new hampshire. there are fewer religious conservatives there. a lot of people describe themselves as independent. how does he play there? >> listen, he's so well-known as this idealogically pure guy who doesn't get along with his establishment buddies. it's going to be hard to escape that. rubio to me is the guy that can make the best case against cruz in iowa. trump has used up his attacks. he went through canada, went through his litany of attacks. i don't know what trump has left. rubio really hasn't engaged cruz in front of that new hampshire electorate in a way yet that i think we're going to see. >> think about rubio next week. maybe the endorsements are going to pour in. on the other hand, the attacks from every corner, they're coming. >> if you're marco rubio, that i have -- they've been coming.

look what he ended up doing. on one hand, you have to be impressed at his resilience. he has to finish second in new hampshire, minimum, i think. ted cruz has a shot at second. this is going to be a fascinating three-way race with a couple of -- one wild card left, probably john kasich who could make voice. maybe christie makes noise. but the one, two, three is going to be the story next week. >> hillary clinton gets to come out of iowa and say, technically, i'm the winner, but this had to be a near-death experience for the once presumptive nominee. >> she avoided a complete disaster. a win is a win. bernie sanders has to feel great and, yet, you can look at it another way and say, if he couldn't beat her under these conditions in this state, how is he going to beat her in south carolina, alabama, where the electorate is more diverse?

it. the clinton campaign may have won technically, they're acting like they loss. the sanders campaign is acting like they won. >> thank you much. get some sleep. we'll have more on the iowa results and the impact on both races moving forward ahead. pivotal court hearing in the case against bill cosby. could his legal team get criminal charges dismissed? stephanie gosk is at the courthouse. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. bill cosby's legal team are back in court, arguing that the criminal charges be thrown out all together. cosby denies the allegations that he drugged and sexually assaulted andrea over a decade ago here in montgomery county. the district attorney did not press charges. he said he struck a deal with cosby that he wouldn't are charges if the comedian testified in his civil case. cosby testified.

heart of the charges being filed today against cosby by an entirely different district attorney. it is the first time that cosby has faced criminal charges, even though there are dozens of similar allegations out there. he has denied them all. legal expert here in pennsylvania tells us that he has -- he and his team have an uphill battle in court. without a court-ordered immuneity deal, the trial goes forward. >> stephanie gosk in norristown, pennsylvania, thank you very much. the fbi took to social media in the search of an agent that disappeared in iran. the fbi is asking for information on the whereabouts of robert levinson. the american had been working for the cia in what u.s. intelligence officials called a rogue operation. the iranian government denies

where she had a better organization. at this point, she is in a virtual tie. sanders is declaring victory, in that he came up against her tough organization. he is a 74-year-old democratic socialist who isn't even a member of the democratic party. so this is really a reality check. a tough reality check for hillary clinton. she has to realize now that she of younger people. he got 70% of those under 30. this is a tough road ahead, especially in the caucus states where she should be strong. >> thank you very much. the results were more clear cut on the republican side. ted cruz scored an upset over donald trump. for that story, let's go back to nbc national correspondent peter alexander. good morning again to you. >> savannah, good morning. it was a commanding victory for ted cruz. here are the standings from last night, resetting the table going forward.

iowa caucus goers. donald trump a disappointing second at 24%. marco rubio at 23%. his campaign is casting that as a significant victory. catapulting him forward, as they view it, as the anti-trump, gentlemen. here in the state, cruz landed a short time ago. his team popping champagne on state. donald trump. polls. he should be more likely to get the support of them than a ted cruz. but a top ted cruz adviser telling me they are confident that they can replicate the successful organization that helped catapult them to victory last night in iowa. a matter of moments ago down the block from us at the airport, marco rubio met with patrons at a nearby diner, insisting to them he will be here every day this week. he's confident he, too, can try to pull out a win.

msnbc and bloomberg politics mark is with us now. good morning. >> good morning, matt. >> you jumped on the plane with cruz after his victory in iowa last night and flew to new hampshire. set the scene. what was the mood like? >> it was excited. emotional guy. he was emotional last night at his victory event. he got the results separately. he was traveling to des moines from going to a cause kuscus. he reunited with his wife and father and they were emotional. senator cruz is a passionate guy about his policy positions, but he's also a great political operative. he knows what he built in iowa with the money he has in the bank, more money than all the other establishment candidates combined, more money than anybody but donald trump's bank account, and the organization he's built elsewhere, he is a candidate who will be in the finals after this win in iowa. it's a pretty good place to be

given much of a chance by many to be one of the strongest candidates in the field. >> what's fun about new hampshire coming next is there is precedent for wildly different results, and candidates coming out of nowhere and doing well in new hampshire when they were a blip in iowa. what do you see shaping up next? what did the loss to donald trump do to him, in this aura of political invulnerability he developed? >> donald trump is new to politics and facing a position that many candidates face. going into iowa with high expectations and fighting back in new hampshire. donald trump has been a fighter in his career. not in politics. we'll see what he's made of. there are five other guys who think they can win the primary. ted cruz could by getting the conservative vote consolidated. john kasich has done well. jeb bush, chris christie, marco rubio. there are six people who think they can win the primary. it'll be a wild seven days. >> you talked about money with

>> oh, manyy god. michael jackson, going to neverland ranch and landing -- taking a helicopter. nervous, crazy landing. michael laughs at me and said, you were afraid. you were afraid. we go into his library and he says -- he plays me all these songs he likes. none are ours, mine and babyfaces. he said, i like this and this and that. i said, do you have the right producer? he said, i wanted to show you what i like. >> he was a complicated guy and had a complicated relationship with his brother, germanejermaine. you worked with both of them and were in the middle of it. trouble. we were working with jermaine and michael called separately and asked us to come out to work with him. we didn't tell jermaine. babyface and i didn't tell him. we went out and said, we have to go to l.a. for a trip. michael. jermaine found out about it and called the studio.

minute, i signed to your label. why are you working on michael? i said, it's michael. he said, i want off the label. he was very, very upset with me. >> neither of them were happy about it, by the way. >> michael was upset because he didn't like that jermaine was upset. >> whitney houston. you first worked with, i think, in 19 991 and then again in 2002. you say there was one of the biggest mistakes of your career. >> i think it was. it was an interview with diane sawyer. it was the first time i learned that whitney had some stuff -- >> you helped arrange the interview. >> yeah. i went to great lengths to help her get the interview. i thought it was a big deal, a great platform. then she asked her about substance abuse and it was then that i even learned there was an issue. i felt that i had done a disservice to whitney because a

artists. i felt i pulled back the curtain and let the world see something that perhaps they shouldn't have known. >> here's a surprising one. la lady gaga. >> the one that got away. >> you had her sign to your label and you dropped her before she became a big star. >> came into the conference room, played piano for me. she was incredible. i told her, you're going to change music. you're an important artist. >> why did you let her go? >> i fell out of love. to me, music and artists, it's sort of a love affair. when she came back to play the demos, i didn't like it anymore. i was impatient and probably wanted some immediate success. it was a huge mistake. >> you had a good relationship with pink. >> still have a great relationship with pink. >> she mentioned you in the lyrics to one of her songs. >> yeah. >> i'll play the lyrics and you tell me why she said this. >> l.a. told me, you'll be a pop star.

everything you are >> all you have to change is everything you are. what happened with that? >> she really went out there on that one. the truth is, we went to dinner at a restaurant. it was really a simple, silly story. there was a lot of flatware and glassware. she said, what's all this stuff for? i said, you need an etiquette class. she wrote the song. >> you have a good relationship with her? >> yeah, i love her. >> you talk about your time on the "x factor" and say you did the show for the wrong reasons. >> maybe so. time. i was becoming frustrated. way. i became frustrated that i'd done things that i was really proud of, but people didn't connect the dots. people really didn't know my musical history. i said, if i do the "x factor," maybe they'll connect the dots. >> you end with, i do believe the greatest acts i will work door. i firmly believe that.
